Because it’s difficult to spot in the early stages, the disease is one of the most deadly: Only 1% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the UK survive their disease for ten years or more. And survival rates in the the United States aren’t any better. This is because the early warning signs of the disease are easily mistaken for everyday health complaints. By the time the disease has been diagnosed, it’s almost impossible to completely remove all the cancerous cells. Processed Meat – The Biggest Culprit. For a long time, scientists believed the disease was caused by excess body weight, pancreatitis, diabetes and smoking, which raises cancer risk by 74%. However new research has discovered that meat products may also be to blame. A recent study published in BMC medicine found that a high consumption of red meat was related to higher all-cause mortality, including death by cancer. Processed meat had the highest association to cancer and cardiovascular disease while poultry had little to no association. And this isn’t the first study to link meat consumption to cancer. Pancreatic Cancer Risk Increases With Every 2 Strips of Bacon You Eat: A study funded by the Swedish Cancer Foundation examined 11 studies and case reports on more than 6,000 pancreatic cancer patients and found that every 50 grams of processed meat – roughly one sausage or two strips of bacon – you eat daily increases your risk of pancreatic cancer. Eating around 150 grams of process meat a day, makes you 57% more likely to suffer from pancreatic cancer. Although researchers still aren’t sure what mechanisms are to blame, nitrates and nitrites have often come under fire. Not because they’re toxic but because they have to potential to be. What Are Nitrates? Nitrates are naturally-occurring compounds found in the soil, air and water. They act as a preservative and color enhancer in meat products. The body uses nitrates to kill harmful bacteria (like salmonella) in the digestive tract, facilitate cell signaling, dilate blood vessels and increase energy. The problem is, when nitrates found in meat are exposed to high heat from cooking, they turn into compounds called nitrosamines. This can only happen when the right amino acids are present. These carcinogenic compounds are the real danger. They’re often found in cured meats, beer, some cheeses, nonfat dry milk, and processed fish. In fact, these foods are also linked to increased risk of bladder, esophageal and stomach cancer. Another popular nitrate-full food, hot dogs, is linked to a 700% increased risk of childhood leukemia. Eat Foods Rich In Vitamin C. While the best way to avoid these carcinogenic compounds is to cut out processed meats and dairy products all together, you can minimize your exposure to nitrosamines by eating vitamin C-rich foods during nitrate-rich meals to prevent nitrosamine from forming in the first place. Scientists now estimate that 60 percent to 70 percent of cancers are all preventable through currently available information and simple changes in diet and lifestyle. ” With that encouraging statement in mind, this article addresses changes you can make in your day to day dietary lifestyle that will not only improve your health, but help you to avoid toxins that can increase your chance of cancer. Cured and Smoked Foods- Nitrates and nitrites act as preservatives to prevent food from spoiling, they also add color to meats. When cooked, nitrites and nitrates change into by-products called N-nitroso compounds, such as nitrosamines and nitrosamides. N-nitroso compounds are associated with an increased risk of cancer. Farmed Fish- According to Food and Water Watch, farmed fish contain higher levels of chemical pollutants than wild fish, including PCB, ’s a known carcinogen. Due to overcrowding in fish farms, fish are more susceptible to disease increasing the use of antibiotic use. They are also more susceptible to sea lice, which means they are also treated with pesticides. GMOs– Sadly GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) have infiltrated our food supply at an alarming rate. GMO foods should be avoiding. Look for GMO free labels on foods. Grilled Meat- Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, are produced through certain types of combustion, such as the burning of coal or wood. An additional problem is created when fat from meat drips onto a fire, creating a flare up and smoke, this allows the PAHs to affix themselves to the food you’re cooking increasing your risk for carcinogenic exposure. Microwave Popcorn– These bags are lined with perfluoroalkyl, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) to prevent oil from soaking through the packaging. When heated, these chemicals leech into the popcorn; when ingested, they show up as blood contaminants. PFOA has been associated with tumors in animal organs (liver, pancreas, testicles and mammary glands in rats) , and increases in prostate cancer in PFOA plant workers. But the truth of the matter is that many common food items have, indeed, been scientifically shown to increase cancer risk, and some of them substantially. Here are 10 of the most unhealthy, cancer-causing foods that you should never eat again: 1) Genetically-modified organisms (GMOs). It goes without saying that GMOs have no legitimate place in any cancer-free diet, especially now that both GMOs and the chemicals used to grow them have been shown to cause rapid tumor growth. But GMOs are everywhere, including in most food derivatives made from conventional corn, soybeans, and canola. However, you can avoid them by sticking with certified organic, certified non-GMO verified, and locally-grown foods that are produced naturally without biotechnology (http://www.naturalnews.com). 2) Processed meats. According to a research conducted by the Hawaiian University, all processed meats increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67 percent. In addition to this, nitrites and nitrates are definitely the most detrimental additives found in hot dogs. Even organic hot dogs contain nitrite in high amounts! When these compounds are exposed to high temperature, they combine with amines and result in nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are known as potential cancer-causing chemicals and they are linked to colon, bladder, pancreas, and stomach cancer. Shockingly, only one hot dog on a daily basis can increase the chances of developing colorectal cancer by 21 percent, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research. Flavorings include the infamous monosodium glutamate (MSG) and carmine – a dye from the shells of small beetles, boiled in ammonia or sodium carbonate. As we mentioned before, this cancer-causing food can lead to four types of cancer. The experts warn that nitrates and nitrites are the next on the list of problematic additives used in hot dogs. How this works – well, in the presence of high heat, they combine with amines in processed meat to form nitrosamines. It’s the nitrosamines that have been linked to cancer – especially colon, bladder, stomach, and pancreas cancer. Eating around 150 grams of process meat a day, makes you 57% more likely to suffer from pancreatic cancer. In this video I wanted to talk about foods I try to keep out of my diet. I want to stress the word, "moderation" to you guys, though. As long as you are consistent with your healthy lifestyle, it is okay to eat whatever you want from time to time. When you abuse the privileges of eating foods in moderation, it could complicate your everyday lifestyle without you even knowing it. I am not telling you to banish these foods out of your diet completely, but because they don't provide any health benefits, it makes sense to scale back. 3 words for you guys: Mind. Over. Matter. 1. PROCESSED MEATS (FILLED WITH SODIUM + NITRATE/NITRITES) -I usually avoid all casings of mystery meat. -I don't eat red meat, but for those that do, moderation is best. -As for poultry; you know you always grabbed the Ranch dressing at your Grandma's on Thanksgiving to dip that turkey in. Why? Because it's bland and unprocessed. That's how you know it's healthy. That is the type of meat I would probably eat. -The quality of the source is the underlying factor of healthy dieting. 2. ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS (I TRULY BELIEVE ALL FOODS CONTAINING ARTIFICIAL SUBSTITUTES TO SUGAR CANE AREN'T GOOD FOR OUR HEALTH) -Refined sugars too. -Coconut Sugars, Blackstrap Molasses, Manuka Honey are replacements for those that need sweeteners daily, but all sugar in moderation is best. 3. WHITE FLOURED GRAINS (ANY WHITE BREADS, RICES, PASTAS -Poses no health benefits when you compare it to whole grain sources of flour. -If you are trying to lose weight, a diet with white floured foods can hamper the process. -Some white floured foods have a high sugar content. 4. CANDY (GMO'S OUT THE ASS. PICK AND CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES WISELY) -Nothing else really to say here, candy is bad. We all know it. But we still eat it, because we love refined sugar. This was the hardest thing for me to cut out of my diet but from time to time should be okay for someone who lives an active lifestyle. 5. FRIED FOOD (FRYING FOOD IN CERTAIN OILS AT HIGH TEMPERATURES CAN COMPROMISE THE FOOD AND POTENTIALLY KILL OFF ALL THE NUTRIENTS THAT FOOD CAN OFFER) -Frying food in certain oils at high temperatures compromises the food and all benefits the food can offer. -Asparagine is an amino acid that is found in many vegetables, with higher concentrations in some varieties of potatoes. -When frying, oils skyrocket to high temperatures that are unhealthy. When this happens in the presence of certain sugars, asparagine (an amino acid which is a building block of protein) can form acrylamide. -Regardless of what method you use to cook your food, make sure you don't OVERHEAT or OVERCOOK your food to the point where you kill off all nutrients and compromise the benefits. CANCER-CAUSING FOODS that CANCER Docs Never Eat! Every day there's some new warning about this food or that food maybe causing cancer—and soon enough that advice turns out to be bunk. We talked to oncologists to learn which foods may truly put us at risk. Processed meats are up there with smoking and asbestos when it comes to cancer risk, according to the World Health Organization. On their no-no list are sausage, bacon, hot dogs, and ham, due to an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Eating just 50 grams of processed meat each day (that's around two slices of ham) can increase the risk of colon cancer by 18 percent, according to the report. The problem comes not just from the meat itself but from the main methods of processing it, which include smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives. When cooking certain meats, sodium nitrites combine with natural amines in the meat to form cancer-causing N-nitroso compounds. "I avoid smoked foods due to nitrates," says Ioana Bonta, MD, a medical oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Newnan, Georgia. In spite of similar preparation, smoked fish is not as bad as smoked meats, according to Cary Presant, MD, an internist, hematologist, and an oncologist in Los Angeles and an assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Medical Oncology & Therapeutics Research at City of Hope Cancer Center in West Covina, California.
