How to undertake a suicide risk assessment in an inpatient setting

15:49
This educational film is in 2 parts showing poor practice and good practice as a nurse attempts to assess the potential risk in allowing a recently admitted patient to go out on leave. As you watch the first part, you can identify the problems in the approach of the nurse and psychiatrist. In the second part, focus on the different skills, verbal and non verbal, that the nurse uses as she tries to understand William and explore the potential risks of agreeing to his request to leave the ward. If you want to read more about the subject matter of this film, you can try "A Pocket Guide to Risk Assessment and Management in Mental Health", by Chris Hart and published by Routledge. It's available as an e-Book, on Amazon and in book shops.

Vignette 4 - Introduction to a Mental Health Assessment

03:36
This is a vignette designed to train health care professionals. The clinician in the video uses both helpful and non-helpful interventions. The learner is encouraged to identify which interventions are helpful and which are not. View the full project at: http://pedicases.org/interviewing/intro.html Vignette description: Shawn is a 16 year old boy who has come to an outpatient clinic for a mental health assessment. As with many, if not most adolescent boys, the appointment is not his idea and he is not happy to be at the clinic. The provider must use a technique to engage him in a way that helps him feel that it was worth his while to come. He must help the patient get beyond his closed off presentation and help the boy talk about himself.

Mental Health In The Media: Good Intentions, Bad Outcomes? | Doctor Mike

04:55
Mental health can be a tricky topic to cover in media let alone on YouTube. Lately, I've noticed a huge uptick in these stories and many if not all of them have great intentions. However, I have seen some questionable information floating around and it's leading me to share this concern with you guys. Even when someone wants to do something good it can lead to some unwanted consequences. Take for instance the peanut allergy situation. Parents tried protecting their children from peanuts so much so that it actually caused a spike in allergies. Now we know exposing children early on to peanuts is beneficial. This is just one example of when good intentions can lead to bad outcomes. The mental health conversation is getting a lot of buzz lately and patients have come into my office having what I call anxiety on anxiety. They are literally being anxious about their feelings of anxiety (even when they are totally appropriate). Also, many have self-diagnosed themselves from media (often incorrectly) and it takes a great deal of work and convincing to get them to let those thoughts go. Diagnosing a mental illness is complex and takes time. This is why it is best to go see your doctor to get a full examination and have an open discussion about what's going on in your life. If you or a loved one is in immediate danger calling 911 and talking with police may be necessary. It is important to notify the operator that it is a psychiatric emergency and ask for an officer trained in crisis intervention or trained to assist people experiencing a psychiatric emergency. Schizophrenia

19:02
Here is the link to review Nursing Exam or NCLEX style questions related to Schizophrenia: http://empowern.com/2015/07/schizophrenia/ Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that generally appears in late adolescence or early adulthood, (between ages 15-25 among men and about 25 to 35 in women) but then, it can rise at whatever point in life. It affects approximately 1% of the population, affecting almost equally men and women. Schizophrenia comes from the Greek word schizo which means “split” and Phrene that means “mind”. However, contrary to popular belief, the word schizophrenia does not mean “split mind and/or multiple personalities”, but rather, “split off” from reality. With schizophrenia the individual has an altered capacity to interpret reality- frequently loss of contact with reality. This disorder affects how the person thinks, acts, feels, and sees the world. A person with schizophrenia may see or hear things that don’t exist, may not make sense when they talk, believe that others are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, trying to harm them, or feel like they’re being constantly watched. They may sit or stand for quite a long time without moving or talking. In many cases, the illness develops so slowly that the affected person does not know he/she has it for quite a while. While, with other people it can strike suddenly and develop fast. Most schizophrenics, if untreated, progressively withdraw from interactions with other people, and lose their capacity to deal their own personal needs and grooming.

Truth about Mental Health: Karen Miller Williams, 3 Principles Nurse (Social Anxiety Inside Out #28)

01:12:29
http://socialanxietyinsideout.com Mental Health is often thought of as mental illness. It doesn't have a good rep. And yet, it is such a gift! And it is often forgotten or overlooked. How many times have you heard someone say Mental Health and immediately you think "uh oh" and avoid the topic. I had a friend who went to report to jury duty and when she began to say that she was a mental health clinician, the judge heard mental health and didn't let her finish what she was saying and excused her from her jury duty without further delay. Mental Health certainly does not conjure up pleasant thoughts now, does it? One day it will be the norm for schools to teach about innate Mental Health. It will be common place for folks to live in mental well-being. Imagine a world where there is more good will, more brotherly love, more understanding and compassion, more civility and respect, more helpfulness, more camaraderie and cooperation, more joy and appreciation, more success and accomplishment. Mental Health exists in every human being at birth. Over time we learn habits of thinking that become the norm for us. We learn to worry or to judge. We learn to take our thoughts seriously. We believe what we think is real. We forget what it is like to live with a quiet mind and to have a sense of wonder. We get so busy that we miss the beauty around us. We aren't often present even when we are with friends and family. We are rushed, overwhelmed, stressed, tired and aren't happy. For many (one out of four) things get bad enough that there is a mental health diagnosis given. What is a diagnosis? The DSMV is a thick manual listing the numerous mental illnesses that mankind suffers from. I see a diagnosis as a label of where someone spends a lot of time. For instance, people who know me would not consider me a shy person. However, I have to say that when I am shy, I am very shy. I just don't spend much time there so I don't get a label of being "shy". Someone who is depressed spends enough time there to be diagnosed as depressed. Someone who is angry a lot, gets labelled an angry person. That is not who they are. It is only because they spend a lot of time in that state, that they get that connotation. One of the most powerful feelings in helping others to regain their mental well-being, is to see the health that is inside of them, past the outside manifestation. To recognize their true identity and who they really are awakens them to consider something other than the diagnosis. When you speak to that core of wisdom and acknowledge the health within, it opens the door for new perspective, for new thought and for transformation. Let's hope that celebrating Mental Health becomes the norm and that Mental Health gets the appreciation it deserves! It's about time that the understanding of the Three Principles is found everywhere... in schools and universities, and that it is common knowledge for people around the world to be aware of their birth right. With the understanding of the fact that we create our identity from the inside out, much suffering can be eliminated. After-all, the outside is but a reflection of what we think. Psychiatric Interviews for Teaching: Psychosis

12:30
In this film, an on-call psychiatrist is assessing a young man who has been referred urgently by his GP. The psychiatrist takes a history in which she elicits persecutory delusions, third person auditory hallucinations, running commentary, thought insertion, and somatic hallucinations. She then makes a risk assessment, takes a drug history and assesses risk. The patient is clearly suffering from a psychotic disorder and the most likely diagnosis is schizophrenia. Differential diagnoses would include a drug-induced psychosis. Please note that this video has been made by the University of Nottingham for teaching purposes. The psychiatrist is a real psychiatrist but the patient is played by an actor.
