Building a deck is a big project that requires a lot of planning. Before you begin, there are a lot of variables to consider. Are you permitted to build a deck in your county? Where will you build your deck? What size should your deck be? Once these questions have been answered, you can tackle your design plan. The first step, before even considering building a deck, or getting too creative, is to verify deck requirements and restrictions. Contact your local building department or homeowners' association to see if decks are permitted. Once you know the regulations, apply for a permit. Once you have been approved, the next step is the location of your deck. Common deck designs are typically connected directly to a house or separated which is called a free standing deck. Free standing decks can go anywhere in your yard, so if you enjoy being surrounded by nature or the garden, a free standing deck may be the choice for you. Another vital factor to consider is the access to the deck. Make sure that the deck is easily accessible. Do you want to have access from the back door? Is there a path that goes to the deck? Once you have a general idea of where you want to build, determine size and function. If you are going to entertain, a bigger deck would suit you and your guests. However, if you are looking for a comfortable retreat, a smaller deck would be just fine. Also consider railing and door placement. Make sure your railings clear your windows, or if you have swinging doors, be sure they clear the railings. Logistics are set, but what style of deck do you want? A deck with few architectural lines offers a contemporary look, but a deck with lots of grain lines is more traditional. For a more modern style, consider sleek metal balusters. When it comes to materials, you have many options. Using treated lumber is most sturdy, durable and cost efficient. Composite decking offers design flexibility, durability and less maintenance. This is a great option for extreme climates. Wood decks will need to be weather sealed and stained more often. Lighter colors should be used in areas with more direct sunlight, the darker the wood, the more heat is absorbed in the decking. There you have it. A few things to consider before you start building your deck. A deck can transform your backyard by creating a fantastic outdoor entertaining area that the whole family can enjoy. In this step by step video series, we take you through the whole process of building a deck from designing the deck to finally laying the boards. In Part 1, we explain how to plan the deck, starting with the footings. A deck needs to be supported by a footing, and the size of the footing is regulated by the local council based on the type of soil in your area. After setting out the shape of the deck, you'll need to mark the position of the footings on the soil, then excavate the area, digging holes for the footing. You'll need to calculate how much concrete you'll need for the footing. It's best to order pre-mixed concrete as it's less effort and not much more expensive than mixing it yourself. There are two types of post supports. One sits in the wet concrete, while the other bolts to the top of the dry footing. If you're building a deck off the back of a house, you'll need to attach the deck to a ledger that's attached to the wall at the same height as the bearers. Don't forget to check out part 2 for how to install decking posts. For more DIY tips and info, head to www.handyman.net.au

Easy to Follow Time-Lapse on How-To Build a Ground Level Deck on a budget. This is an easy DIY deck, also known as a Floating Deck. For a deck this size, its an easy weekend project, but can be finished in one day with enough people helping out! Save money and build it yourself! **Great Manual on Building Ground Level Decks: http://amzn.to/2FCVBgu To start the deck build project, you must first decide what area your deck will be built in, deck size, deck shape, deck color or material used, how it will attach to the house (if at all), what the foundation will be made of (ground spikes, patio blocks, landscaping bricks), if an underlining material liner or a filler material like gravel will be used, any water drainage needs, and if you will need or require rails, benches, or stairs. Once the planning phase has been completed, check your local Hardware Store, like Home Depot or Lowe's for assistance with final deck design, as well as a materials list for the entire build. Most Home Improvement Stores will have a Kiosk where you can plan, customize, and get a schematic with materials list without much effort. --VIDEO on 2-YR DIY Deck Follow-Up : https://youtu.be/fQPm6xJIPJE?list=PLzFUxuBF07AZK4hYwWDyqmtlMU5rWIzEn The video time-lapse demonstrates the steps needed from building the basic frame from 2x6 treated Framing boards on strategically placed patio blocks for leveling, bracing the main frame on the inside, laying the gravel in a grade away from the house for water, as well as preventing under-growth from coming up, and finally laying down your deck planking, made from wood or composite. This is the most time consuming part of the process, and most tedious, as each board needs to be carefully spaced, screwed down in numerous spots along the length, and then finally cut to length, matching the other deck planks. Having reliable power tools will make this project much easier, many times over. Must Have's are a Large Level, a Corded Power Drill, a reliable Circular Saw, as well as good Building Materials, like long-lasting Deck Screws, and follow-up deck treatment products, like a good Wood Deck Cleaner, and sealing Deck Protector. --DeWalt Power Drill: http://amzn.to/2D8F5mC --Level 48-inches: http://amzn.to/2rajJnx --Circular Saw: http://amzn.to/2DA5xXo --Deck Screws: http://amzn.to/2DdMPrC --Deck Board Spacer Jigs: http://amzn.to/2DDJUp2 --Deck Cleaner: http://amzn.to/2DfZJpl --Deck Protector and Sealer: http://amzn.to/2FGH5Eo Once the build is complete, utilize the space with common deck accessories, like a good water-proof patio set, an above-ground fire pit, quality grill or barbecue, as well as Privacy Screen Fences, and waterproof LED Light Strips can create relaxing ambiance or a fun party environment! --Patio Furniture 7-Piece Set: http://amzn.to/2DBKWCk --Portable FIRE Pit: http://amzn.to/2EIAecr --Privacy Screen Fencing for Decks: http://amzn.to/2r6hbqq --Ambient Outdoor 24 Ft. A plan is laid out, but now you need to lay a deck with a strong foundation to provide years of enjoyment. Before you begin make sure you call 811 to have a utility company come out and mark any utility lines. Make sure you have a pencil, tape measurer, 3lb. hammer, batter boards, hammer and nails, mason string, utility knife, a line level, a shovel, wood bob, wood steaks, drill and bits and a level. Most deck building methods consist of a foundation, beams, joists and the decking. A deck that connects to the house would connect to a ledger board to provide support for the entire foundation. For additional information on ledger boards, check out the printable instructions for this layout. Using string and batter boards, mark where your deck will be. Place the batter boards beyond the corners of your planned deck. Use string to tie to the posts to mark the outside edges of your deck plan. Check that the strings are level and square. Measuring diagonally, make sure that the strings are square, the diagonals will be equal. Make adjustments as needed. Next you will want to start laying the foundation. Many building codes require the sod to be removed. Once removed, use landscaping fabric and gravel under the deck. Even if you are not required to do so, it may be a good idea to prevent weeds and grass from growing through the deck. To mark holes for the foundation posts, determine your spacing. This spacing depends on the size of your beams, building codes and deck design. Use strings to line up posts. Once you know the spacing, measure in and use a plum bob to mark holes. Place a steak at each spot. With the foundation laid out mark the height of the beams along the house as a reference. First determine where the house will sit in relation to the door. It should be below the threshold to keep water from entering the door. Measure down the thickness of the decking combined by the width of the joists. This will give you the height of the top of the beams. Then mark a level line along this point on your house. At this point, the layout of your deck is finished and ready to be built. Explore the different above ground pool deck ideas. Wood decks, composite, Stone, Hybrid decks, Resin or aluminum decks. Learn the best deck style is for your pool project. Our Web Site: www.abovegroundpoolbuilder.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Swimaboveground/ Email: email@example.com Here, you will see some really cool deck ideas and learn about the different options available. The first thing you should do prior to building a pool deck is let your imagination set you free . Whatever you can think of is perfectly OK to do. The pool deck you decide on is one that you will look at and use for the next several years, it should be exactly as you desire. There are many new materials available to create the deck of your dreams. Sketch it out on a piece of paper, then it can come to life. Outside change roomOnce you have it sketched, compare your ideas with your family and together you can break down what will be an absolute must and which things to omit. You may want that “water proof cubby for towels” and decide against that outside shower head. By eliminating the things you don’t want will bring about the desired look of your new deck. The most frequently asked questions regarding an above ground pool decks are: “What should the pool’s deck height be?” and “What material are best to use?” Although we are not deck builders here at the Above Ground Pool Builder, we do have some opinions based on our experience. We have seen many decks over the years and know what styles are best when installers come by to replace liners or pools that have decks attached. The next step will involve getting a builder involved and drawing up blueprints. At the very least, go over all your points with potential contractors and choose the contractor that you’re most comfortable with. The contractor will design blueprints of the deck with the correct measurements and include the features you want. From here your budget will dictate whether you need to scale down or add more options. Contractors who build decks for a living will have ideas that may impress you as well. Let the process happen and don’t leave anything to chance. Another question we always get at the Above Ground Pool Builder is “Should we build the deck first?” The answer is “no”. It is very important to build an above ground pool first and then build a deck last. With curves, angles and varying pool top heights it is best to build a deck after the pool is installed. Deck Styles: Cantor• Cantor Lever We think that cantor-levering a deck over the pools edge is a great Idea. The steps and ladders that you use to get in and out of the pool can be adjusted to work with this kind of structure. • Constructed Level with Top Rail, When doing this you want to consider how the top of the pool will come apart? It is best if you go parallel with the first deck board. When it becomes time to change your pool liner you will only have to take off one deck board instead of the entire deck area. You should know how the pool comes apart and build accordingly. • Building Below the Top Rail, We feel this is a good idea as well, just follow the last steps and know how the top system comes apart, this is important when liner needs to be replaced. Halfway down wall• Building Halfway Down the Wall, This is another good idea and you don’t have to worry about how the top comes apart since it will not be affected. With this design you can achieve a multi-level look to your above ground pool deck. By having different levels you can have various areas that serve your needs, such as a sitting area or a grilling area separate from swimming. • Stone Work, Creating a stone patio in combination with your deck makes for a modern looking pool. Try creating a cement patio around parts of the pool. Be sure to create the proper retaining walls so the pool doesn’t collapse. Being creative with your deck will make it your relaxation station. Feel free to look at the following ideas for inspiration. Your pool deck should be a place that you and your family will be proud to relax and enjoy for years to come.

Disclaimer: this deck was not built "properly" - I decided I wanted a deck, watched some videos on youtube, picked up some materials and built the deck all within 10 hours on a Saturday afternoon. it's a basic 10x10 deck with pressure treated wood, 12" on center 2x6x10 joists, 1x6x12 boards used for decking, 3" deck screws and a single 4x4x8 post was cut for a few pieces... The brick under the post is not for support, just to keep the wood off the grass, both posts are bolted into the existing retaining wall and 50% of the depth is sitting on top a concrete foundation (with vapour barrier), lastly, 15 feet of the perimeter is bolted to the house so the deck is not going anywhere. thanks for watching!

A partly or fully raised deck can be a great addition to any garden, especially if the ground is sloping or uneven. Learn how to build a raised deck with this step by step guide from our Wickes experts. Subscribe to the Wickes YouTube channel here: http://po.st/YijIE1 For more Wickes garden and landscaping videos click here: http://po.st/jAXyHE Planning The key to a successful deck is in the planning. Avoid very wet areas completely and if the deck is in a shady area be prepared to treat and clean the wood annually. Draw your deck to scale on paper as accurately as you can, remember it's the deck boarding that governs the size of the deck. You should also bear in mind that any deck over 300mm off the ground will require planning permission. Corner Posts When digging the holes for your corner posts be sure to look out for any cables or pipes as you go. Once the soil is removed you should be left with a 300mm x 300mm square to a depth of 700mm for each post. Make sure you add a section of concrete block to each hole before adding in the post and Postcrete. Outer Frame If your deck is on a slope, start with corner where the deck is highest off the ground and mark on the post where the highest part of the frame will be. To ensure rain water runs off your deck, and away from the house, allow for a slight fall in the level of the deck frame by factoring in a fall of 2mm for every metre. Centre post and Support Joists Your support joists should run in the same direction as your deck boards. Sandwich the centre post between two support joists before securing with Postcrete. Trim your post by using a setsquare and a handsaw making sure you treat the cut ends as you go. When laying your landscape fabric it's best to overlap the fabric to ensure it covers all of the area under your deck. Steps Your steps should be supported on solid and level ground. When building your stairs you will also need to make sure they are flush with both the top and side of your frame. When securing your deck boards to the steps, always secure the front faces of the steps first. Deck Boards When securing deck boards we'd recommend drilling all fixing points with a 2mm bit to prevent them from splitting, also, if you countersink all drilled fixing points you will get a smoother finish. Keep spaces even between adjacent boards by using a spacer from an off cut of timber (we'd recommend a gap of 5-8mm to allow the timber to expand and contract). Fascia Boards Start by attaching all the boards that do not need to be cut down, with 64mm screws. If you are adding an angled board because the decking is being built on a slope you will need to add packers to the deck frame. Remember to also leave a gap of at least 5mm between the board and the ground as you do not want it touching the ground at any point. Are you looking for deck plans for above ground pools? There is a lot of information out there, whether you look online or in a store. The information is out there for you to use, you just need to decide what type of deck plans you are looking for. You already know that your plans include a deck and an above ground pool. Those two things are certain; but decision will need to be made about what type of deck you want. There are a few different choices when it comes to deck plans for above ground pools. A deck can be added around your pool that is called a splash deck. This type of deck makes entering and exiting the pool very convenient. The width of your splash deck depends on your needs and space that you have available in your back yard. The typical width of a splash deck is 3 to 4 feet. You can surround your entire pool or just part of your pool with a splash deck. Plans can be purchased and found for different sizes and widths. When looking for deck plans for above ground pools, consider a side pool deck. A side pool deck can be used with a splash deck. You will need to look at deck plans that include a splash deck with a side pool deck. Side pool decks are excellent for parties, barbeques, sunning or just to relax. You will have a lot of unused space under your side deck. You may want to look for plans that create a storage area under your deck. You don’t have to leave it open to the elements, you can enclose the area with lattice or vinyl fencing. When you add a deck to your above ground swimming pool it makes it a permanent fixture. Your plans may call for a cement foundation or cement foundation blocks. Check the specifications of your plans; sometimes they will specify the best type of building materials to use. Enjoy making a place for you to relax and enjoy your pool. Investing in your home and family is never a bad decision.
