Fewer And Fewer People Are Smoking In The US

01:01
More and more Americans are putting out their cigarettes for good. In 2015, just 15.1 percent of American adults were smokers, a decline of almost 2 percentage points compared to 2014, according to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The last decline that significant was from 1992 to 1993. The smoking rate has declined almost every year since 1997, when almost 25 percent of U.S. adults said they smoked.  The decline comes with an increase in public awareness campaigns about the health hazards of smoking as well as the growing popularity of e-cigarettes, which are often marketed as a safer alternative to typical cigarettes — although some studies suggest they don't actually help people quit, and there isn't a consensus on whether they're harmful to a person's health.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced earlier this year that e-cigarettes will be subject to federal regulation. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., with more than 480,000 deaths each year.  This video includes clips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and BBC and images from Getty Images. What Happens To Your Body When You Quit Smoking | Bad Effects Of Smoking On Your Body

02:42
What Happens To Your Body When You Quit Smoking | Bad Effects Of Smoking On Your Body Smoking is a severely detrimental habit which leads to numerous negative consequences on your health. please subscribe and watch this video until the end to know the complete information. when you decide to quit smoking, everything in the body experiences great improvements, from the top to the bottom. let me explain this process in 10 stages: 1. The beginning of improvements. 20 minutes after your last cigarette, the pulse and the blood pressure are normalized. 2. Return to Normal. After only eight hours, the carbon monoxide levels in the blood neutralize, as well as the levels of oxygen. 3. Low heart attack risk. After only 24 hours, the risk of a heart attack is lowered. 4. Restored sensual perception. After 48 hours, the senses of taste and smell are improved, and the nerve endings begin to regrow. 5. Improved circulation. Between the period of 2 weeks and 3 months, the blood circulation is improved, and walking becomes easier. Moreover, the function of the lungs is increased up to 30 percent. 6. Easier breathing. After 1 to 9 months, the body regains its energy, and the issues with shortness of breath, coughs, and sinus congestion are reduced. Cilia starts regrowing in the lungs and thus cleanses them and lowers the risk of infections. 7. Improved Heart health. After a year, the risk of coronary heart disease in smoking quitters is twice as lower than that of a smoker’s. 8. Lower cancer risk. After 5 years, the risk of throat, mouth, and esophageal cancer in non-smokers is half that of smokers’ and the rate of lung cancer death is twice as lower than that of average smokers. 9. Lower risk of lung cancer. 10 years after one quits smoking, the lung cancer rate is comparable to a nonsmoker’s, since the precancerous cells are replaced. Moreover, the risk of bladder, kidney, throat, mouth, esophageal, and pancreatic cancer is significantly lower. 10. Reversal. After 15 years, the risk of heart diseases is the same as in the case of a non-smoker. Thank you for watching. If you liked the video please share it with your friends and family.

Which is More Effective ..? There are two types of people who want to quit smoking, those who immediately do it all of a sudden and try to fight the craving to smoke as strong as possible and those who choose to reduce the frequency of smoking gradually before finally stopped. Actually, which one is more effective than these two ways of quitting smoking ...? In a study published in the journal entitled Annals of Internal Medicine in 2016, it was mentioned that quitting smoking by reducing the frequency of smoking gradually turned out to be less et ... In a study involving 697 adults who were addicted to smoking, there were two groups in which one group chose to quit smoking abruptly and another group who chose to lower the frequency of smoking by up to 75 percent within 2 weeks before actually quitting. All participants receive medical help in the form of nicotine replacement that can be used before and after the day they stop smoking.   Four weeks after the day they quit smoking, it was found that 49 percent of participants who quit smoking suddenly managed to stop completely. Meanwhile, only 39.2 percent of participants who came from a group who quit smoking gradually who really no longer smoke .... In a study conducted earlier in 2013, it was found that 48 percent of smokers who quit suddenly managed to fulfill their determination, far more than the 2 percent of smokers who quit smoking in stages .... According to health experts, quitting smoking by reducing the frequency of smoking gradually is not effective because smokers actually think of cigarettes as a reward after so long did not suck it. This will actually train the brain to ask for a reward if we quit smoking for a long time so it makes it hard for us to actually quit smoking .... Given the results of this study, we already know an effective way to quit smoking, do not ...?

Bank offers free holiday to staff who quit smoking

04:45
A West Bank business is sending staff off on a free holiday - if they permanently stop smoking. It's part of a campaign to get more people to kick the habit. The Palestinian Ministry of Health says it spends 80 percent of its budget on treating conditions associated with tobacco use. A busy street in Ramallah, in the West Bank. Just like most days, the smell of cigarette smoke hangs in the air. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, 30 percent of the population here are smokers. They spend 1.2 million dollars every day on cigarettes - nearly 400 million dollars a year. And the health implications of the addiction are well known. Globally, tobacco is said to kill around six million people each year. And Palestinians don't escape that fate. Dr. Asaad Ramlawi, from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, says smokers are at risk of developing serious health conditions. "Heart and arteries disease, lung disease, different types of cancer and diabetes - all these diseases exist in the Palestinian society in a very large number," he explains. "We spend 80 percent of the Palestinian Ministry of Health budget for the treatment of these diseases. Seventy percent of the death of Palestinians is from these diseases yearly and of course smoking is a major cause of these diseases. Anti-smoking (measures) in the Palestinian society and especially for the young generation during the coming years will lead to economic recovery and improve the health level of the society." And there are efforts to curb the habit. Cigarette advertisements have been banned and machines selling the tobacco goods are not allowed in public areas. Now big business is joining the battle. The Bank of Palestine has launched a campaign to encourage its employees to quit smoking. The bank had already introduced restrictions on when and where its workers can take cigarette breaks. But now it is rewarding those who kick the habit too. "At the beginning we instructed our employees not to smoke inside the bank building or even at the entrance of the building and there is a limit to the number of times the employee can smoke," says Thaer Hamayel, a spokesperson for the bank. "But after that we decided to launch a campaign to encourage our employees to quit smoking by sending those who quit smoking with their family to another country like Turkey for a tour covered by the bank in order to encourage them to quit this harmful habit." Eight employees have quit smoking and been rewarded with a five day trip to Istanbul for their success. One of those is Marwan Mafarjeh, a branch manager. He picked up the habit as a university student. But after 22 years as a smoker, there were lots of reasons to give up. "I decided to quit smoking because I thought about my health and my expenses and also the work environment. I am working as a manager at the bank and I can't go out of the building each time I needed to smoke. At the same time I was wasting my time doing this and I like to use the time of smoking to do something useful as well as the positive effect on me economically and health wise," he says. Mafarjeh gave up smoking a year ago and says other people should consider doing the same. "I advise everyone to quit smoking no matter what, it doesn't matter how and with what method, and instead use the money he spends for smoking for sports, special needs and other things that he can benefit from." For Mafarjeh, that saving is 300 US dollars a month. And quitting means he now leads a much healthier lifestyle. Freakonomics Radio - How to Make People Quit Smoking

36:16
Our latest Freakonomics Radio episode is called “How to Make People Quit Smoking.” The gist: the war on cigarettes has been fairly successful in some places. But 1 billion humans still smoke — so what comes next? In the U.S., roughly 70 percent of smokers say they want to quit. But when they try, some 90 percent of them fail. So what does get people to smoke less? Something must be working: the smoking rate in the U.S. has fallen by more than half. Kenneth Warner, an economist at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, has been doing tobacco-policy research since the 1970’s. One of the most powerful smoking deterrents, he says, is making cigarettes more expensive. WARNER: The effects of tax and price are more well studied than any other area of tobacco control. We have a lot of data about that. What we know is that if you increase the price by 10% you will decrease total cigarette consumption by 3 to 4%. The Vanderbilt economist Kip Viscusi agrees, calling price a “powerful tool” that doesn’t wear out. And yet one out of five Americans still smokes. Worldwide, there are about 1 billion smokers, with the highest rates in Asia. So besides price and tax controls, what makes people quit smoking? In the podcast, you’ll hear from Jeffrey Harris, a physician and economist at M.I.T. who has studied tobacco control in Uruguay, which he calls “a pioneer” in smoking cessation. You’ll also hear about the upside of smoking — or at least of getting nicotine in your system. Paul Newhouse, an M.D. who runs the Center for Cognitive Medicine at Vanderbilt, is doing research to learn if nicotine (divorced from smoking, ideally) has strong medicinal efficacy: NEWHOUSE: It appears to activate a class of what we call receptors, [which are] important for regulating a whole variety of brain functions. And so we think that nicotinic receptors are important for things like attention, for behavioral strategies, for what we call executive functioning, which is the ability to make decisions and evaluate information, we think it’s important for memory, and so that has led us to thinking about what particular disorders might be helped by stimulating nicotinic receptors with nicotine or with something else. Among the disorders that Newhouse and others in his field think may benefit from nicotine therapy: schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, depression, and many others. If nicotine does indeed work as theorized, that may explain why so many people have such a hard time quitting smoking: they are self-medicating. You’ll also hear about an early tobacco-control policy from the Ottoman Empire in the early 1600s. Trust us, you wouldn’t have wanted to be a smoker then. ➤ Google Plus: https://plus.google.com/b/113356460096647194676/113356460096647194676 ➤ Subscriber: https://goo.gl/rQxE4G

Quit Smoking: Before Trying To Quit Cold Turkey You Need To Watch This Video

03:54
Get your copy of my free EBook at http://www.thequittingcrew.com If you want to quit smoking, this video is going to give you the facts about quitting cold turkey. So what exactly does quitting “cold turkey” mean and does it actually work? Quitting cold turkey is to abruptly stop the use of an addictive substance with no treatment, support or replacement medications. This can be from drugs, alcohol or in your case….tobacco. This method has a long standing misconception that the most effective approach is too ride it out with just willpower on its own. The likelihood of you being successful is very small. Research over the past 25 years has shown that out of every 100 people who try to quit smoking cold turkey, only about three to five of them will succeed for longer than six months. While it is possible for some people to quit this way, at least 95 percent of people can’t. Most smokers who try to give up, use this method at least once and they think they can handle quitting on their own. But they typically underestimate how powerful nicotine addiction really is. Addiction undermines your willpower and the ability to control impulses through decision making. Willpower by itself is not the most effective way to quit, but it is still an important tool for those trying to kick the habit. Luckily there are ways that you can give your will power a helping hand and here are three tips to help you fight your addiction. You need to be more specific with your goals. Make sure you have a WHEN and WHY you want to stop smoking. Instead of saying “I’m going to quit smoking”. Say I’m going to quit smoking by……. And my reasons for quitting are……. This gives you something to work towards and motivation for you to quit smoking. Break your goals down so you can gradually see you progress. Set a date to quit smoking and work towards it Instead of trying to quit cold turkey. Say you smoke a pack a day, you can reduce the amount you smoke by one per day. So over a month or however long you are comfortable with depending on how much you smoke. You can slowly wean yourself of smoking cigarettes and what this will do is increased the likelihood of quitting long term. Don’t keep your goals to yourself. Tell your friends, family and work colleges. Invite them to join in as extra encouragement and support is always welcome.

How to Get Counseling to Stop Smoking | Quit Smoking

01:46
Watch more How to Quit Smoking videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501808-How-to-Get-Counseling-to-Stop-Smoking-Quit-Smoking Getting counseling to stop smoking. Well, I'm a smoking cessation counselor. So I am 100 percent in favor of it. Not everyone needs it but I feel that most people do and there are different types. There are individual sessions and there are group sessions. My favorite is group sessions. You might ask, "Why?" Well, I will tell you that most people that cannot quit smoking cold turkey are very ashamed of it. That the cigarettes have that much power or them. And they think that they're the only ones. They can't understand it and they think there's something wrong with them. So when they come together in a group and they find out that everyone shares that same guilt and shame about the addiction it lets go of so much of it. And then it unblocks their belief that they can quit. And you can. Once people quit smoking a lot of feelings come up because all those feelings have been pushed down from smokings. Oh, let me smoke over this or let me smoke over that. Oh this happened, give me a cigarette or that happened give me a cigarette. I have a test. I have a project at work. Let me smoke, smoke, smoke. I mean it comes up over everything so getting counseling when you put down the cigarette because everything all the anxiety, the panic, all the different feelings, the stuff that you've pushed down all these years. Maybe not that many years. Maybe you haven't been smoking that long but you can't stop. So getting counseling for these issues is so helpful. Let there be no shame in your game.

Breaking News - Cancer death rates fall as Americans quit smoking

06:18
Cancer death rates in the US continued to fall between 2014 and 2015, extending a 24 year decline, according to the latest figures from the American Cancer Society. The 1.7 percent decrease means that nearly 2.4 million fewer people died of the disease in that period.New cancer cases are still predicted to affect more than 1.7 million people in 2018, but as smoking falls out of fashion and detection and treatment technologies improve, the US can expect to see survival rates continue to improve.Cancer is still a destructive blight on American society, however, and is estimated to have killed 158.6 per 1,000 people diagnosed with the disease in 2015.The most recent rate represents a 26 percent decline from the peak of cancer mortality in 1991.Encouraging reductions in the fatality of the disease were driven by a precipitous fall-off in lung cancer diagnoses and deaths, according the new report, published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.Lung cancer is among the most common forms of cancer in the US, and certainly the most deadly. But it killed 45 percent fewer men between 1990 and 2015, and 19 percent fewer women between 2002 and 2015.'This new report reiterates where cancer control efforts have worked, particularly the impact of tobacco control,' said Dr Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society.'A decline in consumption of cigarettes is credited with being the most important factor in the drop in cancer death rates,' Dr Brawley said.'Strikingly though, tobacco remains by far the leading cause of cancer deaths today, responsible for nearly three in ten cancer deaths,' he added.About 15 percent of Americans still smoke, but 10 percent fewer people indulge the habit than did a decade ago, a trend that is thought to drive declines in many illnesses, particularly lung cancer and diseases. For women, breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed form, accounting for 30 percent of all new cancer cases. The disease may once have been a death sentence, but fatalities declined by nearly 40 percent since 1989.On the heels of awareness campaigns and a push to encourage Americans to get more frequent colonoscopies and check ups, death rates for colorectal and prostate cancers are less than half of what they were in 1993, helping to cap overall mortality.Historically, cancer has proved more fatal for American minorities than for white people. That gap is narrowing, but, according to the report, the improvements apply mostly to older Americans, 'likely in part due to universal health care access for seniors through Medicare,' the American Cancer Society said in its press release. The racial divide closed by seven percent among seniors, but that statistic 'masks stark persistent inequalities for you and middle-aged black Americans,' the release said.Black people under 65 were 31 percent more likely to die of cancer as of 2015, and in some states the disparities were even more extreme. The racial gap between black and white cancer mor AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-5235597/Cancer-death-rates-fall-Americans-quit-smoking.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

How to Deal with a Nicotine Withdrawal | Quit Smoking

02:08
Watch more How to Quit Smoking videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501810-How-to-Deal-with-a-Nicotine-Withdrawal-Quit-Smoking There are two types of withdrawal from nicotine. There is physical withdrawal and there is emotional withdrawal. For the physical withdrawal there are nicotine replacement therapies which have nicotine in them and will help you withdraw slowly physically. Nicotine addiction is 80 percent psychological, it's 20 percent physical. Either way it can be a very difficult withdrawal. One of the first suggestions I have is to treat yourself like a little kid, like a child. Get plenty of rest. Eat proper nutritious meals. Nap when you're tired if you can. Take walks around the block. Or, if you live near a body of water or in the mountains, take a beautiful walk and look at the sky. Deep breathe. Breathe in and out. Drink a lot of water. That will also help you with cravings. And the deep breathing will help you when you're feeling panicky and full of anxiety. It's the first thing a paramedic will tell you when you're feeling terrified. When you see a tragic accident a paramedic would tell you, take deep breaths slowly in through your nose and out through your mouth. Well, it works the same way with the nicotine withdrawal. There are many things that you can do to also help you with nicotine withdrawal. Don't let yourself get too lonely. I've already mentioned tired. If you're angry try to deep breathe. Try to talk it out with a friend whatever's going on, because these things can be exacerbated by the withdrawal. You could end up picking up a cigarette instead of dealing with the actual situation. I recommend you try all of these things. Please, reward yourself. Be good to yourself. Don't pick up a cigarette.

According to research from a study that looked at Google search engine queries, people are more likely to type in something related to quitting smoking on a Monday compared with other days of the week. According to research from a study that looked at Google search engine queries people are more likely to type in something related to quitting smoking on a Monday compared with other days of the week. They looked at data from from 2008 to 2012 in English, French, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, and found that there were about 25 percent more searches related to quitting smoking on Monday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that 70 percent of people who smoke cigarettes in the UnitedStates claim that they want to quit, and over half of them try to quit once a year. John W. Ayers, a public health researcher at San Diego State University and lead author of the study said: "On New Year's Day interest in smoking cessation doubles, but New Year's happens one day a year. Here we're seeing a spike that happens once a week." There were reportedly around 150 thousand more Google searches about quitting on Monday than other days of the week that had about 600 thousand searches. What do you think? Why do more people search the internet for information about quitting smoking on Monday?

Schizophrenia & Smoking | Schizophrenia

02:38
Watch more How to Understand Schizophrenia videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/512803-Schizophrenia-and-Smoking-Schizophrenia Hi. I'm Jeanie Tse, here to talk to you about schizophrenia and its relationship to smoking. We know that about 80 percent of people who have schizophrenia smoke, which is far higher than the general population, where it's more like 20 percent. And so, a lot of people have looked at the reasons why that is. So, there's been a lot of different research to look at why there's this relationship between schizophrenia and smoking. One theory has to do with self medication, that people with schizophrenia smoke to reduce stress and to reduce symptoms like depression and agitation. As well, smoking seems to help with some of the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia, so it helps them to think clearer and decreases some of the confusion that can happen in schizophrenia. But, the biggest of reason that has stood up in the studies may be boredom, that a lot of people with schizophrenia end up being institutionalize for periods of time, being out of work and that leads to a lot of idle time that leads to smoking behavior. Obviously, we know that smoking leads to poor outcomes in terms of heart disease, lung disease, and cancer, and so we know that this is something that needs to address. So, there's a lot of energy being put into smoking cessation programs for people with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. And so, these can be access you know through your treatment providers. Both your psychiatrist and primary care providers have been involve in these efforts. You can call 311 in New York City or you can access your local city government to obtain things. In New York City, we provide nicotine replacement patches and gum to people for free. And in hospitals they've also put in smoking cessation programs. It used to be that in every psychiatric ward across the country, there was a smoking room or you could just actually smoke on the unit. When I started training as a psychiatrist, we even used to give cigarettes out to people to encourage them to come into the clinic. That is a thing of the past, thank goodness, we now really work to reduce smoking because we know that it really affects people risk, both in terms of mortality and quality of life.

Imagine this alternative could help millions of people quit smoking and came with only a fraction of the harmful chemicals that cigarettes do. Well, you don’t have to imagine it. It exists. E-cigarettes are the most innovative and promising smoking-cessation product yet invented. So, public health officials and anti-tobacco activists are all in favor of this life-saving innovation, right? Actually, they’re almost all totally against it. Why? Because, incredibly, they make no substantial distinction between e-cigarettes and real cigarettes -- even though they are completely different products. To begin with, e-cigarettes aren’t cigarettes. They contain no tobacco. Instead, a liquid containing nicotine derived from tobacco leaves is vaporized, and users of e-cigarettes inhale that vapor. Vapor, mind-you – not smoke. This is significant because the real harm from tobacco comes from the combustion process, which releases hundreds of toxic compounds known as tar. Since e-cigarettes have no tobacco and no combustion, they release no tar. This makes them, according to Britain’s Department of Health, at least 95% less harmful than tobacco cigarettes. E-cigarettes do contain nicotine, an addictive drug. However, there is little evidence that nicotine alone is bad for you, making it similar to, say, caffeine--a drug used every day by millions of people. Brad Rodu, an oral cancer specialist at the University of Louisville, put it this way: “I love coffee, and I’m sure I could get caffeine if I smoked my coffee beans…but I would be paying a much different price in overall health [if I did].” In other words, when it comes to addictive substances like caffeine or nicotine, it isn’t the addictive substance that’s harmful; it’s how it’s delivered. As South African psychiatrist Mike Russell said about cigarettes: “[People] smoke for [the] nicotine, but they die from the tar.” And again, there’s no tar in e-cigarettes. Does this all mean e-cigarettes are completely safe? Of course not. Nothing is completely safe. E-cigarettes are a relatively new innovation so more research is needed, especially on long-term effects. There’s also a place for sensible regulation to ensure consumer safety. But unlike normal everyday products, any potential risk posed by e-cigarettes is far outweighed by a real – not potential – good: saving lives by providing the nicotine that smokers enjoy without delivering the deadly toxins that can kill them. Many former smokers have successfully used e-cigarettes to help them kick their nicotine addiction altogether. A recent study in an Oxford Journal peer-reviewed publication, Nicotine and Tobacco Research, said that e-cigarettes could reduce smoking-related deaths by 21 percent. That’s thousands of lives every year. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/whats-wrong-e-cigarettes

Bad news for people who vape...a study shows vaping won’t help you quit smoking. A new study published in the journal PLOS One finds 90 percent of people who vaped and smoked at the beginning of the research...were still smoking a year later. Georgia State University researchers studied nearly 13-hundred American adult smokers and re-visited them a year later to see if they quit or not. Researchers say vaping is unlikely to be a sufficient solution to quitting.

HIQA Report on TV3: E-Cigarettes Helping People to Quit Smoking

01:58
Ireland's health watchdog is opening a public consultation on vaping as an aid to quit smoking. HIQA has found that an increased uptake of tobacco replacement therapies would increase the number of people who successfully kicked the habit. Kicking the habit: the number of Irish people who smoke has been in decline in recent years but it's still at 23-percent. HIQA today published a new study examining the effectiveness of the different methods people use to quit. For the first time ever in Europe, e-cigarettes were included in the study. “What we found with the evidence that is available is that e-cigarettes are successful in allowing people to quit smoking successfully. It’s up to about two times more effective than if they take no therapy. What we have to say I suppose is that we are waiting for confirmation of those results from the ongoing studies that will be reported in the next year or so”. The estimated cost of the health care system here of smoking is over 460 million euro every year. Twenty-nine percent of smokers try to quit using e-cigarettes. VIP E-Cigarette has been in business for five years. It has 20 outlets. “It is very welcome to see something like that (HIQA report) that says e-cigarettes can help smokers quit which I think is fantastic. If you're a smoker I think it's great to have another option of something that seems to be from the report and from people that use them, they seem to be a success in relation to people stopping smoking”. Ash Ireland was set up 25 years ago to reduce the number of smokers. It says e-cigarettes do have a role to play in that but it does have reservations. “The evidence is not quite as strong as for the standard nicotine replacement products and they don't have the same long term track record of safety as the standard nicotine replacement products”. HIQA says the combination of the drug Varenicline together with nicotine replacement therapy is the most effective way to give up smoking. A public consultation on the findings of the report is open now until the third of February.

Standardize Packaging May Help People Quit Smoking

00:58
A new review shows that introducing standardized packaging for tobacco may be an effective way of decrease the number of smokers. Both France and Australia have introduced laws that require tobacco companies to have standardized packaging. Ann McNeil, lead author of the review and deputy director of the UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies, said that the team's "findings are supported by evidence from a variety of other studies that have shown that standardized packaging reduces the promotional appeal of tobacco packs, in line with the regulatory objectives set.” Research on France wasn’t included in the study because its law on uniform packaging just went into effect at the end of 2016. However, the French health ministry is aiming at decreasing smoking in the country by 10 percent over the next five years. http://www.menshealth.com/health/how-to-decrease-smoking http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

For Smokers, Never Too Late to Quit; Diesel Exhaust and Cancer

04:00
This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish There's new medical evidence for the expression "better late than never." Researchers have found that smokers reduce their risk of dying from tobacco even if they stop smoking after the age of 60. Smoking is a known risk for many diseases, including many forms of cancer as well as heart disease. But most studies on the health effects of smoking involve middle-aged people. The latest analysis by German researchers examined the findings of 17 studies. These were carried out in the United States, China, Australia, Japan, England, Spain and France. Smokers 60 and older had an 83 percent increased risk of dying from all causes compared to people who had never smoked. Smokers also had a 34 percent higher risk of death compared to former smokers. T.H. Lam is professor in the school of public health at the University of Hong Kong. He says people who continue to smoke as seniors have at least a 50 percent chance of dying from their smoking habit. "And if they stop smoking, then they can reduce about one-quarter of their excess risk," he says. What about smokers who start at a young age and stop when they are in their 30s? Dr. Lam says they can reduce their risk of dying from a smoking-related illness to almost the same level as someone who never smoked. Even people who never smoke can still die from breathing other people's secondhand smoke. An article on smoking among older individuals, with a commentary by T.H. Lam, appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine. In other news, the World Health Organization now says diesel fuel exhaust causes cancer. Since 1988 the WHO had rated exhaust from diesel engines as "probably carcinogenic" to humans. Now, it compares the risk to that of secondhand cigarette smoke. The announcement came after international experts spent a week reviewing new research findings. Those included a long-term study of more than 12,000 miners who were heavily exposed to diesel exhaust. The diesel industry pointed out that the mining study lacked exact data on exposure levels during its early years. Also, diesel engine makers point to their new designs that produce far less emissions than older truck and bus engines. The WHO says stronger standards are needed to limit diesel emissions into the air. The United States Environmental Protection Agency continues to rate diesel as only a "likely" cause of cancer. Smoking Cigarettes Cause Snoring and Sleep Apnea - Here's One More Reason to Quit

02:01
Yes, smoking Cigarettes are very much related to snoring. Nicotine is nothing but a killer compound that not only take people closer to their death but also affects them in their day to day life. 1. Smoking and Snoring are related Smoking results in habitual snoring because of the nicotine effects on the sinuses and nasal passages. European researchers claim that smoking can cause snoring in about 33 percent of men and 19 percent of women. They also claimed that with increased frequency of smoking people snored more. 2. Smoking and Snoring in Men Nicotine effects are also too severe to disturb your pattern of sleep at night. This can also result in snoring. Although snoring is more common among aging men, studies revealed that smoking enhances snoring in men below the age of 60. Heavy smokers are also said to snore more heavily than light smokers. 3. Smoking and Snoring in Teenagers For teenagers too, smoking teenagers snore more than non-smoking teenagers. Children who smoked and snored more also seem to be having disturbed sleeping patterns at night and feel quiet drowsy during the day. 4. Secondhand Smoke and Snoring Studies reveal that exposure to secondhand smoke can also enhance the risks of snoring. For example, people who lived with smokers were reported to snore more. A European study revealed that 20 percent of the non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke snored compared to 13 percent who had never been exposed to secondhand smoke at home. 5. Smoking and Snoring in Women Another interesting revelation was that the women counterparts of men smokers snored during sleep. 6. Secondhand Smoking and Children Children exposed to secondhand and environmental smoke are also vulnerable to snoring. In fact they tend to experience waking sleeping patterns at night. For nicotine addicts wanting their health, looks, libido, energy, time, and money back, this book offers the solution. This is a very powerful program consisting not just of a book, but a whole arsenal of cessation tools. In order to eradicate cravings, release anxiety, and dispel the illusion of smoking as pleasure, there are Tapping and breathing exercises for the reader to follow. An online hypnosis session designed to change the brain back to how it was before nicotine hijacked the system comes part of the package. There are also visualizations that work on the subconscious mind, cutting the chains of addiction and creating a new smoke-free persona. Now, her revolutionary cessation program is available. Quit Smoking Now and Forever! is the complete guide for finally conquering the nicotine demon. The text is designed to speak to the subconscious as well as the conscious mind, allowing someone who smokes to literally change their “mind” about being a smoker as they turn the pages. Quit Smoking Now and Forever! is for all those people who have raised their heads above the smoke long enough to realize they need to find a way out. They have probably tried and failed a number of times and are now looking for a definitive solution. With an insatiable urge for ever more money, cigarette manufacturers have now introduced 600 additives, ranging from ammonia to chocolate, into their already genetically modified tobacco – making cigarettes the most addictive drug in the world. It has become so bad that according to the Surgeon General only two and a half percent of people are now able to quit without assistance, while six million people die from this curse every year. This unique book offers the antidote to this deadly addiction, enlightening the smoker to the web of deceit spun to entrap them. Quit Smoking Now and Forever! provides a step-by-step plan that can be tailored to suit different people. After all, not everyone has the same character, emotional state or belief system. Some people want to use natural herbs and homeopathy to help them quit. Some people benefit from Nicotine Replacement Therapy while others need to release the stress behind their smoking habit. A few people just need to get mad enough at how they have been manipulated in order to put cigarettes down forever. Quit Smoking Now and Forever! provides support and advice for every stage of the cessation process—from mentally preparing smokers to quit, to making sure ex-smokers never start again. Many strings are artfully woven together throughout the chapters, with stories and imagery all designed to equip readers with the tools they need to vanquish the nicotine demon – once and for all. Smoking bans help Americans quit if they are rich educated

03:22
Bans against smoking in restaurants and bars work, at least for wealthier, richer people, according to a new study of Americans over 25 years. The Northwestern University study found that everyone living in such areas was more likely to attempt to quit smoking, but poorer people were less likely to give up cigarettes for good.As of July, only 25 states have banned smoking in all indoor workplaces, such as restaurants and bars, in the US, where about 15 percent of adults still smoke. The study authors wrote that while these bans are beneficial, more public health efforts need to be made before the effects benefit all socioeconomic classes.People living below the poverty line continue to smoke nearly twice as long as those with better incomes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).Less educated and poorer people are also more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke in places like restaurants and bars, leading to 34,000 premature deaths from heart disease alone annually. In the new study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the researchers compared 25 years of health data to information about geographical locations of smoking bans.Once a ban was introduced, smoking became about 20 percent less common among people with a bachelor's degree or higher level of education. The same group saw a reduction in heavy smoking, with fewer people smoking half a pack or more cigarettes a day.For those in the poorest group in the study, living in an area where indoor smoking was banned was linked to 15 percent more attempts to quit.'An important marker of smoking cessation success is quit attempts,' explained study co-author Dr Amy Auchincloss associate professor in Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health.'On average, it takes somewhere between eight and 14 attempts to finally quit,' she added. The increase in quit-attempts suggested to the researchers that smoking bans were a start, but by no means a solution. In terms of long-term effects, bans did not change smoking habits for those with a high school level of education or lower. The clear inequalities in the effects of smoking bans 'highlight the need for a multi-pronged approach -- including tobacco taxes and ensuring that tobacco companies do not promote their products to vulnerable populations - as well as providing free smoking cessation counseling and pharmacotherapy,' Dr Auchincloss said. These findings come just a week after tobacco giant Philip Morris International announced it's resolution to 'quit cigarettes,' and ween itself of its biggest cash cow, a sentiment not echoed by the unaffiliated Philip Morris USA.A study published earlier this week also found that three out of five smokers become hooked after just one cigarette.'Our results suggest that smoking bans may help start the process among people with lower socioeconomic status by making them more likely to try to quit smoking,' said said one of the paper's researchers, Stephanie Mayne, a postdoct

Hookah & Cigar Smoking vs. Cigarettes | Quit Smoking

Watch more How to Quit Smoking videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501813-Hookah-and-Cigar-Smoking-vs-Cigarettes-Quit-Smoking Is Hookah or cigar smoke safer than cigarettes smoking? I am often asked this question. Well I'm not an expert on Hookah or cigar smoke. I do know these things: cigars have one to two more milligrams of nicotine than cigarettes. I mean, I should say, one cigar has one to two-hundred percent more nicotine than cigarettes do. The myth about Hookah is that water filters out the toxins. Well that's not true either and also while Hookah sessions last around 60 minutes usually it is an average from what I understand. The amount of nicotine that is taken in, along with tar and other carcinogens that is taken in is a lot more than your average cigarettes are. So the answer to both questions is, no. The last thing I want to say about cigar smoke is that, people think that because you don't inhale, you know, you don't actually practice going of a cigar, that the cigar smoke isn't going into your lungs and into your body. Well, think about it now, what about all the mucus membranes in your mouth. What about all the chemicals and nicotine and everything else that's in this cigar, aren't they going into your bloodstream? And don't you think some of that air is getting into your lungs? It's really maybe more than you think. So I would say that there is no safe level of smoke, period.
