Polycystic ovary syndrome commonly knows as PCOS is a problem which a lot of women face these days. It is a condition in which a woman's hormones are out of balance. It causes problems with a woman’s periods and can make it extremely difficult to get pregnant. We have Ms. Pooja Bhargava a Dietitian/Nutritionist to help you with these queries and to debunk the myths around this. PCOS also may cause unwanted changes in the look of a person, one common example is that a woman with PCOS tends to gain weight. In this video, we look at what are the symptoms to watch out for and address the weight gain problem that can occur due to PCOS. PCOS causes the women to get high androgen levels that lead to symptoms such as body hair growth, acne, irregular periods and most importantly weight gain. PCOS makes it more difficult for the body to use the hormone insulin, which normally helps convert sugars and starches from foods into energy. This condition is called insulin resistance which can cause insulin and sugar to convert into glucose and to build up in the bloodstream. High insulin levels increase the production of male hormones called androgens. High androgen levels lead to symptoms such as body hair growth, acne, irregular periods and weight gain. Because the weight gain is triggered by male hormones, it is typically in the abdomen. That is where men tend to carry weight. So, instead of having a pear shape, women with PCOS have more of an apple shape. You also need to keep a check on the food habits. Avoid dairy, chocolates and packaged food. Curing poly cystic ovarian syndrome is not possible. But poly cystic ovarian disease can be successfully managed with weight loss alone. Losing weight itself indicates several things when you are trying to manage PCOD. The very fact that you are able to lose weight successfully with PCOS running in the background is an indicator of the fact that 1, that your insulin resistance is doing better now, that your insulin sensitivity has improved and so as your glucose and fat metabolism which is allowing your body to shed weight. 2, having hormonal balance i.e. balance of oestrogen, SHBG, progesterone, testosterone which are the hormones which are imbalanced in PCOS has been assured and that is allowing your body to shed weight successfully. Trying to lose weight is very hard in PCOS and nobody can tell this better than people who suffer from it. So losing weight makes sure that all these underlying mechanisms which are linked to PCOS are balanced and your body is coming to a metabolic balance which it had prior to the development of PCOS. That itself is assuring that you are managing PCOS successfully. Losing weight with the right kind of diet, not with crash diets, eating every 3 to 4 hours, having healthy food including lot of super foods in your diet and losing weight thus helps to ensure that your hormones are balanced, your metabolism is balanced and thus it helps you get regular periods, it helps to boost your fertility levels. It also helps the most nagging symptoms of PCOD go away like acne, hair loss. Thus weight loss is and thus the most successful way of managing PCOS. If you are not able to lose weight effectively despite of doing all things that means something is wrong. Do re-evaluate what are the measures that you have taken to manage the PCOD, whether the supplements or the medicines you are taking is right or not. I would like to mention that doing on oral contraceptive pills to regularise periods is one of the most common causes that clients come to me that leads to instant weight gain. So such quick fixes are the ones that makes your PCOS worse. Make sure you are doing all the right things. Eat your meals on time. Never skip your meals. Having your breakfast makes you more energetic, helps you work out better. Have healthy food, do not go for crash diets, exercise regularly. Focus on walking, jogging, running, core strengthening, yoga, whatever you can keep yourself physically active. Meditate regularly. Manage stress well because stress is emerging as one of the most prominent causes why women today are developing PCOS. Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a common HORMONAL disorder affecting about 10% of all women of reproductive age. PCOS is diagnosed when AT LEAST 2 of the following symptoms are present: - IRregular periods due to MISSED ovulation. - excess male hormone (androgen) as evidenced by lab tests or physical signs, such as excess facial and body, severe acne, and baldness. - presence of numerous small fluid-filled cysts in the ovaries which can be seen as dark circles on an ultrasound image. This is the symptom that originally gave the condition its name but is NOT always present in PCOS patients. PCOS is highly heritable, but the inheritance pattern is complex, with multiple genetic factors implicated in the susceptibility to the disease. While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, disturbances in a number of hormones are thought to be responsible. PCOS patients usually have EXCESS luteinizing hormone, LH, together with a relatively LOW level of follicle-stimulating hormone, FSH, and increased levels of insulin. An ovary contains hundreds of thousands of IMMATURE eggs, each of these is enclosed in a structure called a follicle. Each month, a number of these follicles develop, compete with each other; and one of them survives and gives rise to a MATURE egg that is released during ovulation. Follicle development is mediated by FSH, a pituitary hormone. In PCOS patients, FSH deficiency results in ARREST of follicular maturation: the follicles stop halfway through their development and become cysts. IMPAIRED follicular development means NO mature egg produced or released, hence the ABSENCE of ovulation. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas and is necessary for consumption of blood glucose by the body’s cells. INcreased insulin level in PCOS patients is a result of the body compensatory response to insulin RESISTANCE associated with PCOS. Excess insulin, together with high levels of luteinizing hormone, induce and maintain overproduction of androgen by the ovaries. Common complications of PCOS include: infertility, miscarriage or premature birth, type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, mood disorders, and endometrial cancer. While the choice of treatment may depend on the patient’s individual concerns, treating insulin resistance is generally recommended for all women with PCOS. Life style changes such as exercise, dieting and weight loss, and medications such as metformin, can LOWER both insulin and androgen levels, thus reducing the risks of type 2 diabetes, and improving ovulation. Patients who want to get pregnant may also be prescribed anti-estrogen medications such as clomiphene. On the other hand, when fertility is not the goal of treatment, hormonal birth control, a combination of estrogen and progestin, is usually prescribed to regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce risks of endometrial cancer.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one health condition common in females of reproductive age caused by hormonal imbalance. Females diagnosed with PCOS often have raised the level of male hormones as well as insulin resistance and reduced levels of progesterone. Several of the general causes of PCOS include excessive stress, depression, anxiety, a perennial tension or faulty lifestyle. Here are 5 Best yoga poses you should do regularly for PCOS treatment. 1. Navasana - Boat Pose Steps: 1. Sit with your knees bent, feet on floor. 2. Lengthen the spine, draw the belly in and widen the collar bones to open the chest. 3. Lean back on the tripod between sitbones and sacrum and lift your feet off the floor, bringing the shins level with the floor. 4. Maintaining the lift through the spine and keep the chest open, arms extend to the front parallel to the floor. 5. When possible straighten the legs out, still keeping the lift through the spine. 6. Stay for 2-5 breaths, work up to 10 breaths. This pose helps to strengthen the back, abdominal muscles and improves digestion. It also puts controlled pressure in your abdominal region, raises blood flow to your reproductive organs and improves the functions of your ovaries. 2. Dhanurasana - Bow Pose Steps: 1. Lie down on your stomach with your feet slightly apart 2. Slowly, fold your knees up and hold your ankles with your hands. 3. Breathe in and lift your chest off the ground and pull your legs up and stretch it out. 4. Hold the pose for 12 -15 seconds 5. Slowly return to the starting position. It Strengthens the whole back body and abdominal muscles, opens up the chest, neck, and shoulders. This pose also helps to enhance the functions of your reproductive organs, alleviates menstrual discomfort and normalizes the menstrual cycles. 3. Salabhasana - Locust Pose Steps: 1. Start by laying down on the mat face-down. 2. Tuck your arms into your chest. 3. Tuck your toes inside and slowly lift your legs up without bending your knees. 4. Then, lift your upper torso off the ground. 5. Your weight should rest on your lower ribs and abdomen. 6. Hold the pose for a few deep breaths. Release. Helps to boost blood circulation to your reproductive organs, tones your abdomen and lowers back muscles, enhances the chest, arms, shoulder, and legs and opens your chest. 4. Marjaryasana and Bitilasana - Cat and Cow Pose Steps: 1. Come to the back position. I.e. come onto all fours on the mat, your wrists directly below your shoulders and your knees in line with your palms, directly under the hips. 2. Inhale and drop your back downwards and look up. 3. Exhale and arch your back up drop your head downwards to look at your knees. 4. Repeat this as many times as you want to. 5. Once you feel that there is too much pressure on your wrists, sit back and relax. It massages plus stimulates your abdominal muscles as well as reproductive organs and improves the functions of your Central Nervous System. 5. Prasarita Padottanasana - Wide legged forward Bend Steps: 1. Now, move into the wide legged forward bend by twisting your body back to the front. 2. Stretch your legs apart as much as you can. 3. Come up and place your hands at your hips. Now, bend forward as much as you can and try to place your crown on the ground. 4. Your hands can either be placed on the mat in front of you or on your hips, or you can use your hands and hook your toes. You can also interlock your fingers behind you and stretch it out, allowing it to hang. 5. Finally, come up carefully, releasing from your posture and relax. This posture acts your hips and lowers back pain by flexing your muscles within turn increase energy and aids blood circulation to your ovaries.
