Curing poly cystic ovarian syndrome is not possible. But poly cystic ovarian disease can be successfully managed with weight loss alone. Losing weight itself indicates several things when you are trying to manage PCOD. The very fact that you are able to lose weight successfully with PCOS running in the background is an indicator of the fact that 1, that your insulin resistance is doing better now, that your insulin sensitivity has improved and so as your glucose and fat metabolism which is allowing your body to shed weight. 2, having hormonal balance i.e. balance of oestrogen, SHBG, progesterone, testosterone which are the hormones which are imbalanced in PCOS has been assured and that is allowing your body to shed weight successfully. Trying to lose weight is very hard in PCOS and nobody can tell this better than people who suffer from it. So losing weight makes sure that all these underlying mechanisms which are linked to PCOS are balanced and your body is coming to a metabolic balance which it had prior to the development of PCOS. That itself is assuring that you are managing PCOS successfully. Losing weight with the right kind of diet, not with crash diets, eating every 3 to 4 hours, having healthy food including lot of super foods in your diet and losing weight thus helps to ensure that your hormones are balanced, your metabolism is balanced and thus it helps you get regular periods, it helps to boost your fertility levels. It also helps the most nagging symptoms of PCOD go away like acne, hair loss. Thus weight loss is and thus the most successful way of managing PCOS. If you are not able to lose weight effectively despite of doing all things that means something is wrong. Do re-evaluate what are the measures that you have taken to manage the PCOD, whether the supplements or the medicines you are taking is right or not. I would like to mention that doing on oral contraceptive pills to regularise periods is one of the most common causes that clients come to me that leads to instant weight gain. So such quick fixes are the ones that makes your PCOS worse. Make sure you are doing all the right things. Eat your meals on time. Never skip your meals. Having your breakfast makes you more energetic, helps you work out better. Have healthy food, do not go for crash diets, exercise regularly. Focus on walking, jogging, running, core strengthening, yoga, whatever you can keep yourself physically active. Meditate regularly. Manage stress well because stress is emerging as one of the most prominent causes why women today are developing PCOS. Polycystic ovary syndrome commonly knows as PCOS is a problem which a lot of women face these days. It is a condition in which a woman's hormones are out of balance. It causes problems with a woman’s periods and can make it extremely difficult to get pregnant. We have Ms. Pooja Bhargava a Dietitian/Nutritionist to help you with these queries and to debunk the myths around this. PCOS also may cause unwanted changes in the look of a person, one common example is that a woman with PCOS tends to gain weight. In this video, we look at what are the symptoms to watch out for and address the weight gain problem that can occur due to PCOS. PCOS causes the women to get high androgen levels that lead to symptoms such as body hair growth, acne, irregular periods and most importantly weight gain. PCOS makes it more difficult for the body to use the hormone insulin, which normally helps convert sugars and starches from foods into energy. This condition is called insulin resistance which can cause insulin and sugar to convert into glucose and to build up in the bloodstream. High insulin levels increase the production of male hormones called androgens. High androgen levels lead to symptoms such as body hair growth, acne, irregular periods and weight gain. Because the weight gain is triggered by male hormones, it is typically in the abdomen. That is where men tend to carry weight. So, instead of having a pear shape, women with PCOS have more of an apple shape. You also need to keep a check on the food habits. Avoid dairy, chocolates and packaged food. In fact, it’s thought to affect almost 7% of pre-menopausal women in the US. But there is surprisingly limited information on how to treat it naturally. That's the topic of this video. What Is The Best Diet for PCOS? PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) is a condition characterised by hormonal imbalances in women. Specifically, an imbalance in male hormones (or androgens) produced by the ovaries. Unfortunately there is no known cure yet, and the cause is unknown. However, genetic predisposition coupled with inadequate diet is thought to be a major driver. STUDY: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23420000 Research shows the most effective eating pattern for PCOS is one that promotes weight loss and reduces levels of the hormone insulin. This is because PCOS coupled with weight gain drives insulin resistance. That’s why PCOS dramatically increases risk of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic health conditions. Additionally, studies show high insulin levels appear to upset regulation of the sex hormones. This worsens PCOS in a viscous cycle. Whichever diet or eating pattern helps you to successfully lose weight and lower insulin will have the best possible outcomes. Assuming you have been unsuccessful following a low-fat diet (which can work), the best alternative is a low carb diet. A low carb diet is an eating pattern where carbs make up roughly 30% or less of your energy intake. By comparison, the average American diet is around 60% carbs. Reducing carbs tends to equal a higher protein intake, shown to keep you feeling full for longer and reduce total calories consumed through the day. That’s why low carb diets can work well for weight loss when not counting calories. A ketogenic diet, which is an extremely low carb diet, has also shown to be promising, but it's incredibly hard to stick to long-term, so mch so that I don't typically recommend it. Aside from overall eating patterns, there are some common food concerns of PCOS patients that should be clarified. One of the main issues is dairy consumption. Some observational studies have linked low-fat dairy intake with increased risk of PCOS, while others suggest full-fat dairy has a protective effect. It’s really unclear at this stage, but we cannot draw any firm conclusions from observational studies. If low-fat dairy is indeed bad for PCOS, and full fat dairy is not, it’s likely because low-fat dairy and other “diet” products tend to have significantly more sugar. In any case, dairy-free is certainly worth a try if other changes have not helped. With a wholesome diet, dairy is not essential. There have also been some concerns with soy and PCOS, but again there isn’t much evidence to go by. It seems moderate soy consumption is likely safe, but at the same time it seems an unnecessary risk to eat a lot or increase your intake. High levels are thought to be an independent risk factor for heart disease and stroke The most efficient way to reduce homocysteine is by increasing folate or folic acid intake, which are forms of vitamin b9. Folate comes from whole foods, while folic acid is the synthetic version. The top folate sources per 100-gram serve are beans and lentils, raw spinach, asparagus, and romaine (cos) lettuce. Lastly, you must Limit Junk Food and Added Sugars, which are a nightmare for treating PCOS. They’re typically high in calories and added sugars, which can raise insulin levels and disrupt other hormones. Know that treating PCOS also involves reducing chronic stress, increasing physical activity levels and getting adequate sleep. PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome is a very complicated process and it actually affects almost every major system in the body including your ability to lose weight. A lot of women with PCOS find that they have a harder time losing weight although all of the data says that weight loss guidance for women with PCOS are the same for those who don't have it: diet and exercise. So you asked a really good question. If you have PCOS, what do you do to lose or maintain weight if good eating habits and exercise aren't helping? It would be best to talk to your doctor because they know the specifics of your individual case of PCOS and they can discuss what weight loss goals are appropriate for you because studies have shown that a slight decrease in weight can actually have huge benefits on your body. It can help women with PCOS, who have previously not been able to ovulate and get pregnant, get pregnant. It can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure and all other sorts of things just a few pounds at a time. The doctor can help you set realistic goals and they can talk to you about what your eating habits have been, what your exercise habits have been, and help modify those if there are changes to be made to help you be more successful at what you've already got going on. It's important, generally speaking though, when you're losing weight to, like I said, first make realistic goals and choose a diet plan that's going to actually work for you and be realistic.
