It has been described as intensive and collaborative, ideally incorporating an evaluative stage. There are a variety of approaches to professional development, including consultation, coaching, communities of practice, lesson study, mentoring, reflective supervision and technical assistance. The University of Management and Technology notes the use of the phrase "professional development" from 1857 onwards. In the training of school staff in the United States, "he need for professional development came to the forefront in the 1960's". A wide variety of people, such as teachers, military officers and non-commissioned officers, health care professionals, lawyers, accountants and engineers engage in professional development. Individuals may participate in professional development because of an interest in lifelong learning, a sense of moral obligation, to maintain and improve professional competence, to enhance career progression, to keep abreast of new technology and practices, or to comply with professional regulatory requirements. Many American states have professional development requirements for school teachers. For example, Arkansas teachers must complete 60 hours of documented professional development activities annually. Professional development credits are named differently from state to state. For example, teachers: in Indiana are required to earn 90 Continuing Renewal Units (CRUs) per year; in Massachusetts, teachers need 150 Professional Development Points (PDPs); and in Georgia, must earn 10 Professional Learning Units (PLUs). American and Canadian nurses, as well as those in the United Kingdom, have to participate in formal and informal professional development (earning Continuing education units, or CEUs) in order to maintain professional registration. In a broad sense, professional development may include formal types of vocational education, typically post-secondary or poly-technical training leading to qualification or credential required to obtain or retain employment. Professional development may also come in the form of pre-service or in-service professional development programs. These programs may be formal, or informal, group or individualized. Individuals may pursue professional development independently, or programs may be offered by human resource departments. Professional development on the job may develop or enhance process skills, sometimes referred to as leadership skills, as well as task skills. Some examples for process skills are 'effectiveness skills', 'team functioning skills', and 'systems thinking skills'. Professional development opportunities can range from a single workshop to a semester-long academic course, to services offered by a medley of different professional development providers and varying widely with respect to the philosophy, content, and format of the learning experiences. Some examples of approaches to professional development include: Case Study Method – The case method is a teaching approach that consists in presenting the students with a case, putting them in the role of a decision maker facing a problem (Hammond 1976) – See Case method. C is to have a clear smart goals for your career after knowing your personality type, your emotional intelligence level and the high level reason of why you want to be a successful professional engineer. 2. A is to get the required accreditations or professional certificates along your career. 3. T is for targeting an active mentor who can provide you with good advices related to your career. 4. A is to activate your communication skill to express yourself clearly through all communications methods with others. This includes how to write an effective CV, cover letter, Attractive LinkedIn Profile, social media presence and personal branding. 5. L is to learn leadership and the professional attitude for work inside a corporate or organizational frame work. This will include how you could professionally react to different situations and keep a clear objective of adding value. 6. Y is for youth and challenging spirit that you should always keep regardless the surrounding negative atmosphere that you can possibly find inside your organization. The only solution to keep this spirit is to be driven from your own values to exceed expectations and work on your skills to develop more value every day regardless what others are doing. 7. S is for skills (technical skills) needed for your job and your continuous benchmark and update with the recent trends in your industry. 8. T is for taking actions which is the main core of any progress. From my experience in the projects or in the coaching/mentoring cases I noticed that the main reason for any procrastination and delay is the hesitation to take action. We hesitate because we are afraid to be criticized by others and this fear make our brain tell us to delay the action to make it better or to reevaluate other option so, we are not moving from our comfort zone and the cycle repeated. In the following articles I am planning to talk about each step of those in detail then I will show you how you can convert those steps into an effective career development plan that you can treated as a project with a measurable SMART objectives. Also I will be offering a free 10 mentoring sessions every month as a part of this program that will be announced soon. In his 2nd State of the Nation Address in July 2011, President Benigno S. Aquino III instructed the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and Department of Education (DepEd) to jointly address the job-skill mismatch issue through reviewing the education and training curriculum to suit industry needs, and guiding the course and career choices and decisions of students. As a response to this presidential directive, in November 2011, the Human Development and Poverty Reduction (HDPR) Cluster of the Cabinet approved convergent programs that seek to address the pressing issue of job-skill mismatch. These four programs envision the following: (1) the development of a competent pool of workforce for the future, under the Enhanced Basic Education program; (2) the establishment of a comparative advantage on the quality of the country’s manpower with international standards, under the Philippine Qualifications Framework (PQF); (3) the creation of a suitable and healthy work environment by providing them access to career guidance and employment coaching services, under the Career Guidance Advocacy Program (CGAP); and (4) the promotion of fast job search period and maintaining a responsive labor market information (LMI) system, under the Enhanced Phil-Job.Net. The CGAP aims to immerse the parents and students on the realities of the labor market, and convince Guidance Counselors and Career Advocates to use career guidance as an effective tool in addressing job-skill mismatch. The DOLE, as the lead proponent of the program, has established a Working Group was (WG) in January 2012 with the DepEd, CHED, TESDA, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) as members. The WG’s main responsibility is to identify areas requiring cooperation, including the development of an inter-agency advocacy plan for 2013-2016. DOLE-Bureau of Local Employment is the WG Secretariat. The CGAP master plan, Career Guidance Advocacy Plan 2013-2016 which was launched to the public during the National Human Resource Summit in December 2013 converges the government’s various advocacy initiatives on career guidance and this will be implemented with a public communications campaign to pave the way for wider public access to national and regional labor market trends, and labor market information (LMI) publications. The overall goal of the Plan is to ensure that students, parents, industries, and training institutions are provided with appropriate and timely knowledge on the realities of the labor market for more informed career decisions. Some of the desired outcomes of the plan are effective networks and coalitions; public participation in the decision-making during the advocacy campaign period; and media and the public attention to creatively frame issues to ensuring favorable results. More importantly, the interventions are meant to reduce the transaction cost of information between labor supply and demand towards the efficient functioning of the labor market. As specific approaches to address the problem of job-skill mismatch, six (6) joint activities were enrolled by the CGAP-WG in this Plan, which include collaborative activities between member-agencies. These are as follows: Career Guidance Week, Capacity-building for Registered Guidance Counselors and Career Advocates, Career Guidance through Social Networks, Career Ambassadors, National/Regional Career Advocacy Congress, and Regionalized Career Guidance Information Blitz. The budgetary requirements of the implementation of the Plan and all the joint programs individually enrolled are being cost-shared by the CGAP member-agencies. All projects enrolled under the CGA Plan are regularly monitored and evaluated by the specific agency project leads through documentation of good practices as well as problems encountered.
