First flight of the SSD, "Simplest Simple Delta" flying wing. I was nervous about flying an elevon control airplane but my fears were unfounded. It's a great elevon trainer. Not twitchy at all. It's made from foam poster board with the paper left on. If it crashes, no big deal. It only takes a couple of hours to build. Not my design, though I made a few changes to the original. A CCD collaboration. 102" wingspan, 60 class electric motor, 80A speed control, 14x7 APC prop, 6s 5000 battery. Needs a few minor tweaks before the next flight but it flies pretty sweet as is :) Servos are a little weak, blowing back at higher speeds, and the angle of attack when sitting on the ground isn't positive enough. Didn't have a Dremel at the field to shorten the gear legs, and as you can see on landing they're digging in, along with the SFG's. Oops! Minor issues that will be remedied before the next video. Just wanted to post some vide to show that it's built and flying, basically. Great job Dennis and Colton! And FFS give me a break about the video. It's an iPhone, and I'm not a pro :) I was just happy to see it fly and get it captured at all.

Todays plane is really awesome! It is the DS(Dead Simple) 24 from RCGroups(http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1252282-24-DS-(Dead-Simple)-Flying-Wing-Pics-Video-Plans). This wing is only has a wingspan of 24" but it utilizes a KFM2 airfoil for some moderate lift. Because I used foam board with the paper on, the wing requires no sparring and is surprisingly stiff. I was REALLY amazed at how well this plane flys. I almost don't want to take it apart to build my 5th plane. ATTENTION ALL RC CANADIANSI This wing only weighs 230g with a 800 3s battery and an AIO fpv camera, making it a great candidate for FPV under 250g.

Flying wings are definitely more twitchy than conventional or canard designs, but this video has a few build tips that make flying them manageable. I wanted to try it out to see what the Kfm3 airfoil would do and check out this whole elevon delta wing build and fly experience (I usually use "real" airfoils). While it was fun for experimentation and the thing is flyable, I definitely prefer my slow-flying/tight-looping twin boom pusher. Landing this flying wing thing is considerably more challenging (you need to keep approach speed pretty high).

GENERAL DETAILS AND BUILD TIPS There are many versions of the beloved flying wing. This particular model is made from a single piece of Dollar Tree foamboard, pre-covered with packing tape, and assembled with hot glue and two-sided foam tape. Its mission is to go very fast with a medium-sized powerplant and 3-cell battery pack. It is easy to build, with only two straight wing cuts, two hinge cuts, and two score-fold-glue joints for the vertical stabilizers. The scale and style factor is pretty humble in order to keep the weight down and the build simple, but it can be made to look relatively cool enough with some nice colored packing tape. Wingspan 21", length 19", AUW 500-650g, speed 60-75mph. I have used 1100kV and 1500kV 70g, 330 watt +/- motors with 8x6 APC props and 3-cell 2200mAh battery packs and gotten very respectable performance. A 2200kV with 6x4 and a 1300mAh pack was 400g and pretty quick as well. One could use a higher kV rating and/or cell count for faster speeds. 64mm EDF works very well too, mounted on top, with a paper cup thrust tube. These can be very fast and nimble with a roll rate over 1000 degrees per second, so I would recommend having at least intermediate skills and low rates to start. Launch 1/2 throttle at 30 degree up-angle and trim while at altitude. The EDF does well with landing gear (nose wheel, tail skids). Let me know if you have any questions or need help building. Right after the Launch I realized this thing is unique and can stay flying for a real good time on a single 14.8v 3200mAh Battery even. Imagine putting twin 5000mAh 14.8v batteries. This plane flies really smooth and cruises on even lower throttle compared to skywalker. It offers more speed compared to skywalker even when its just gliding without power. I believe this is a true long range FPV plane and a great platform for UAV experimentation. Takes up 2kg payload easily and offers plenty of space to mount all kind of gear inside the body. Put this glider together some weeks ago. Nitroplanes and some others are selling the same construction carrying the name Pioneer III. The span is just huge with 2.5 meters. We tested the flying characteristics with and without stabilization system and it's barely flyable without. To set this flying wing up properly you would need to program lots of mixes into your tx and there is also a conversation going on in multiple groups about the general setup and the correct center of gravity which seems to deviate from the users manual. Anyway, the stabilization system I have built in is the Ace RC StaBee V2 and allows to have perfect control over the leveling of the glider. After checking up on the design of little electronic help, I came to the conclusion that its the construction or model as the FY20 or FY21A. You can get them pretty cheap on Ebay... The stabilization system works in 3 modes. Mode 1 is stabilization off, 2 is leveling and 3 is support for the flying characteristics. I have tested the exact same system in multiple planes and it works rock solid as long as you have built it in completely level. Enjoy the video and leave comments. As always...Thanks for watching!

Avro Vulcan Foam Build: This is my first model airplane built out of flat-foam board and the free plans were obtained from: http://www.modelaviation.com/avrovulcan. Building your own park-ready delta wing out of 6mm foam board is easy and you get to enjoy flying a model with a slightly scale look, plenty of power, and maneuverability that will inspire you to want to build more flat-foam models. Personal Modifications: All foam parts were covered in packing tape & edges sealed with aluminum tape; markings were printed on plain paper using a inkjet printer & glued on with puzzle glue; a Velcro strap was added to secure the battery; wing tips were used to serve as landing skids; & the motor mount was reinforced with plywood braces.
