Nano One Materials Aims to Improve Lithium-ion Batteries
At the recent Canadian Investor Conference, the Investing News Network spoke with Dan Blondal, CEO of Nano One Materials (TSXV:NNO), about his company's innovative materials manufacturing technology. Although the technology could apply to a variety of different materials, Nano One has chosen to focus specifically on the cost-effective production of nanostructured cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. "The battery space is something that everyone recognizes," said Blondal, explaining the company's choice. "Every investor out there knows that we need better batteries. There’s a big hockey stick of demand coming up, there’s a lot of pent-up demand for improvements to this space, and we think we can address that." Nano One has already started to receive third-party validation for its process, with testing by Canada's National Research Council validating what Nano One has found in its own labs. The company also has materials test agreements with "some of the really big battery players out there." "We have started testing battery materials with them and we’ve got some very good results back … we’ve come now to the next stage where we’re starting to make improvements to the material to meet their specifications," Blondal said. The CEO also spoke about how Nano One's process works, how he sees it bringing cost reductions for energy storage and how Nano One's partner NORAM is progressing with the conceptual design of a commercial plant. Blondal anticipates that Nano One will have a pilot facility up and running by 2016, producing 10 to 20 kilograms of material per day.

The success of electric vehicles depends largely on their energy storage system. Lithium-ion batteries currently feature the best properties to meet the wide range of requirements specific to automotive applications – high energy density, long lifetime, good power capabilities and low cost. However, the safety and reliability of lithium ion batteries can be problematic if they are not handled appropriately. Exposing lithium ion batteries to extremely high or low temperatures, voltages or excessive currents results in accelerated battery degradation and in the worst case, battery failure. Maruti Suzuki To Set Up India’s First Automobile Lithium-ion Battery Plant Maruti Suzuki To Set Up India’s First Automobile Lithium-ion Battery Plant Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor Corp. on Thursday said that its joint venture partnership with Toshiba Corp. and Denso Corp. will start making lithium ion batteries for India and international markets from 2020. The move comes as a shot in the arm for Suzuki’s local unit and India’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, which is considered to be a laggard in green technology space when compared with its rivals in the market. Globally, Suzuki also does not have effective technology in the sphere and sought partnerships, first with Volkswagen AG; and now Toshiba and Denso, to beef up its presence in the space. Suzuki also has an agreement with Toyota Motor Corp. to jointly develop future technologies. The lithium battery plant of Suzuki in Gujarat would see an investment of Rs1,151 crore. The battery plant will come up at the Suzuki Motor Gujarat campus in Hansalpur, where land has been allocated to the project inside the vendor park. SMG is a unit of Suzuki Motor and has a contract manufacturing agreement with Maruti, which buys SMG’s produce at cost price.

As it turns out, Tesla, and its battery partner Panasonic, started production of cells for qualification at the plant in December, but today, it confirmed the start of “mass production” of the new battery cell, which will enable several of Tesla’s new products, including the Model 3. The new cell is called ‘2170’ because it’s 21mm by 70mm. It’s thicker and taller than the previous cell that Tesla developed with Panasonic, which was in an ‘18650’ cell format. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been boasting about the new cell over the past few month. He said that it’s the “highest energy density cell in the world and also the cheapest”.

Lithium Battery Causing Extreme Fumes When Cut
Holy smokes, these fumes! Chopping a (puffy and worn out) lithium polymer battery that is holding a 75% charge. I was interested in doing this to see what would happen to a pouch type battery when sliced by metal, like it might happen with cells used in a home built electric vehicle. These high power cells with relatively good energy density (120 to 130 Wh/kg) are good enough to power dragsters or hill climbers. But using them one will have to build sturdy enclosures, and most importantly arrange for venting that would allow fumes to escape and not kill the pilot before getting out/being pulled out. Interesting in this context is to see what the voltage does: It's not at all instantly gone, but still lurks for some time before the battery desintegrates enough to make it go to zero. In this case, there's no big fire, but enough smoldering to cause a lot of trouble if this was a large pack. For example, if you look into the Boeing Dreamliner battery issue, you'll sooner or later run into videos about a company that was on contract for Boeing, testing cells. They tested a lot of cells. And what did they do? Amongst other things, they took a gun and fired at cells, in different positions, size, state of charge, and whatnot. And where did they do that? Right out there in the desert somewhere in Arizona or Nevada (I don't remember exactly where). They would put the battery on a rock, count back a few paces, ready, aim and...poof. Flames, explosions, the whole nine yards. You think that they are the only ones doing tests so cruelly? Nope. Any company incorporating these batteries into something they sell will do such tests, or have somebody else do it for them. I would not put my money on many testers having filters and scrubbers to deal with the fumes. Sad, but reality. And now, why am I doing this? Well, there are many people out there who, like me, use these batteries without ever really seeing what happens... "if". And if you think the "if" could never be something that needs an axe cutting a cell in half, again you'd be wrong. I have seen a bicycle trailer with a sheet metal box and a battery inside that rolled over, collapsed, and partially cut into a lipo pack. Poofed and burned, but no camera was there. Had the guy known what can happen, he might have taken a bit more time to build a sturdier box. Insulate it. Fasten the battery inside. And so on, there's really no end to it. It might all seem wrong to you, but there is a very good reason to do these things. Feel free to buy an electric car down the line a few years from now from a company that never did extreme tests. I won't. I want to know. Even if it's just for my own projects. Ignorance is not bliss."

Status and perspectives of lithium ion battery research by Rachid Yazami. Prof. Rachid Yazami Prof. Rachid Yazami, 2014’ Draper Price Award Laureate, Energy Research Institute, Nanyang Technological University – Singapore. In the last decade lithium ion batteries (LIB) have become the market dominating electrical energy storage system in a wide range of applications including handheld mobile electronics, electro-mobility, smart grid and clean energy storage. Since their introduction in the early 90s, LIB have more than doubled in energy and power density, while their cost fell by over one order of magnitude. Accordingly, LIB should continue enjoy a 2-digit market expansion in the next decades. However, the market demand may exceed what current LIB can afford especially in electro-mobility application where the driving range per charge should reach the level of current IC vehicles (~500 km/full tank) and the charging time should be reduced to 5-10 minutes versus up to current status typically of many hours/charge. Therefore, efforts have been focused on next generation batteries with two to three time higher energy and power densities than current. Such an increase requires either developing new anode, cathode and electrolyte materials with enhanced charge storage capabilities and rates or moving to new chemistries different from LIB. In this presentation we will cover a few options for new chemistries, including liquid anode and liquid cathode concept together with fluoride ion batteries. Although these new chemistries are at the early stage of development they potentially offer game changing solutions in terms of convenience of use and range of improvements. In addition to addressing the energy and power density issues, efforts are directed towards increasing the battery life by online control of charge and discharge profiles and parameters. The usual charging protocol consists of applying a constant current (cc) to defined voltage limit followed by a constant voltage (cv) at that end of charge limit. However, it has been recognized that the cc-cv protocol doesn’t provide the best operation lifespan of the battery and should be replaced by a smarter, non-linear protocol that takes into account the battery state of health (SOH). We have developed a smart charging protocol in association with SOH determined by a new thermodynamics approach and the results show an improvement by a factor close to two of the battery life. Biography of Prof. Rachid Yazami Dr. Rachid Yazami, a native of Fez, Morocco, received his MS in electrochemistry and PhD in graphite intercalation compounds for lithium batteries at France’s Grenoble Institute of Technology, and then began his career at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), also in Grenoble, where he rose to research director. He has been a visiting associate in materials science and chemistry at Caltech, in collaboration with JPL/NASA, for 10 years, and in 2010 joined the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore as a visiting professor in materials science. His current research addresses lithium batteries and “beyond lithium” future battery technologies, including liquid anode alkali metal-air and fluoride-ion batteries. He is a founder of CFX battery, Inc. (now Contour Energy Systems), a primary and rechargeable lithium and fluoride battery start-up in Azusa, California; director of energy storage programs at the Energy Research Institute; and principal investigator of battery research at the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) Center for Electromobility, jointly managed by NTU and the Technological University of Munich. In 2011 he founded KVI PTE, Ltd., a start-up in Singapore dedicated to battery life and safety enhancement for mobile electronics, large energy storage, and electric vehicle applications. In 1979–1980 Yazami invented the lithium graphite anode, now used in commercial Li-ion batteries, a $15 billion/year business. He is listed as inventor on more than 70 patents related to battery technology, including nano-Si- and nano-Ge-based anodes for ultra-high rate charge lithium batteries, the lithium-carbon fluoride battery for space and medical applications, and more recently liquid anodes. He has coauthored more than 250 papers on batteries and their materials and systems. He has received scientific awards from NASA, NATO, IBA, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and IEEE, among others.

Novel battery chemistries and materials are key to a revolutionary change. SLAC facilities can play an important role in fundamental and applied research on batteries. Yi Cui is an associate professor at Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1998 and a PhD from Harvard University in 2002. He was a Miller Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley from 2003 to 2005. Cui is an associate editor of Nano Letters and a co-director of the Bay Area Photovoltaic Consortium, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. He founded Amprius Inc. in 2008 to commercialize high-energy battery technology.
