The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has given India many reasons to feel proud. Its achievements have established the country as a forerunner in the field of space, along with pioneers like NASA, European space agency, Russian space agency Roscosmos, Japanese space agency JAXA and China National Space Administration. The Indian government has asked ISRO to allow manufacturers interested in producing indigenous lithium-ion batteries, including those from private sector, to obtain the technology for its mass production. ISRO will now come up with a framework to make this process smooth. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre under ISRO has developed indigenous technology to manufacture such high-power batteries for automobiles and e-vehicles and their feasibility tests in vehicles have been successful. Over half a dozen major automobile companies, battery manufacturers and public sector undertakings have already approached ISRO. Mahindra Renault, Hyundai, Nissan, Tata Motors, High Energy Batteries, BHEL and Indian Oil have shown interest in producing the indigenous lithium-ion batteries. Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari had sought ISRO's help to develop indigenous technology for lithium-ion batteries so that their prices are within the reach of Indian customers. ISRO had earlier developed similar batteries for Mangalyaan, satellites and the launch vehicle applications. The Indian government has set an ambitious target for pushing more use of electric vehicles to reduce air pollution, which has become one of the biggest health concerns. Batteries are the key component of any electric vehicle. At present, all lithium-ion batteries are imported from foreign countries and it's very expensive. The lithium-ion batteries have high-power, but these weigh less and their volume is much less as comparison to conventional batteries.

As it turns out, Tesla, and its battery partner Panasonic, started production of cells for qualification at the plant in December, but today, it confirmed the start of “mass production” of the new battery cell, which will enable several of Tesla’s new products, including the Model 3. The new cell is called ‘2170’ because it’s 21mm by 70mm. It’s thicker and taller than the previous cell that Tesla developed with Panasonic, which was in an ‘18650’ cell format. Holy smokes, these fumes! Chopping a (puffy and worn out) lithium polymer battery that is holding a 75% charge. I was interested in doing this to see what would happen to a pouch type battery when sliced by metal, like it might happen with cells used in a home built electric vehicle. These high power cells with relatively good energy density (120 to 130 Wh/kg) are good enough to power dragsters or hill climbers. But using them one will have to build sturdy enclosures, and most importantly arrange for venting that would allow fumes to escape and not kill the pilot before getting out/being pulled out. Interesting in this context is to see what the voltage does: It's not at all instantly gone, but still lurks for some time before the battery desintegrates enough to make it go to zero. In this case, there's no big fire, but enough smoldering to cause a lot of trouble if this was a large pack. For example, if you look into the Boeing Dreamliner battery issue, you'll sooner or later run into videos about a company that was on contract for Boeing, testing cells. They tested a lot of cells. And what did they do? Amongst other things, they took a gun and fired at cells, in different positions, size, state of charge, and whatnot. And where did they do that? Right out there in the desert somewhere in Arizona or Nevada (I don't remember exactly where). They would put the battery on a rock, count back a few paces, ready, aim and...poof. Flames, explosions, the whole nine yards. You think that they are the only ones doing tests so cruelly? Nope. Any company incorporating these batteries into something they sell will do such tests, or have somebody else do it for them. I would not put my money on many testers having filters and scrubbers to deal with the fumes. Sad, but reality. And now, why am I doing this? Well, there are many people out there who, like me, use these batteries without ever really seeing what happens... "if". And if you think the "if" could never be something that needs an axe cutting a cell in half, again you'd be wrong. I have seen a bicycle trailer with a sheet metal box and a battery inside that rolled over, collapsed, and partially cut into a lipo pack. Poofed and burned, but no camera was there. Had the guy known what can happen, he might have taken a bit more time to build a sturdier box. Insulate it. Fasten the battery inside. And so on, there's really no end to it. It might all seem wrong to you, but there is a very good reason to do these things. Feel free to buy an electric car down the line a few years from now from a company that never did extreme tests. I won't. I want to know. Even if it's just for my own projects. Ignorance is not bliss."

From smartphones to electric cars to home energy storage devices, rechargeable batteries power our modern lives. But have you ever stopped to wonder what’s inside these devices that allow us to send emojis, drive around town and so much more? If so, check out the Advanced Battery Facility. The facility is one of a very few experimental battery manufacturing labs that are available to help academia and industry develop and test new batteries. Most of these places are owned by private companies that keep their proprietary tests under wraps, but a few DOE labs – Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory – operate more open facilities so the results can often be made public. PNNL’s semi-automated Advanced Battery Facility enables scientists to test out all kinds of different materials – including lithium-metal, sulfur, sodium and magnesium – to make batteries last longer and store more energy. The tests are helping scientists from national labs, universities and industry find lower-cost replacements for today’s most common rechargeable battery, the lithium-ion battery. Lithium ion batteries are all around us. In our homes, our cars, even on our person at nearly all times. And so when a cell phone, laptop, or car battery explodes it can rightfully be a cause for concern. However, there’s a lot that goes into the creation of any single lithium ion cell and even a small error at a given point in that process could lead to big problems during the battery’s life cycle. Greg Less, Michigan Engineering’s Battery User Facility’s Manager discusses not only why and how the lithium ion batteries that we all use so frequently might explode, but how researchers at the University of Michigan are trying to change the way batteries are made for a safer and more efficient future. ABOUT THE PROFESSOR Greg Less is the Senior Laboratory Manager at the UMEI Battery Fabrication and Characterization User Facility, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory. Greg received a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Michigan. Prior to joining UMEI, he was a research scientist with battery companies T/J Technologies and A123 Systems.

In this episode, we’ll be diving into this data and seeing how it translates to owners. Back in April, I shared data on Tesla battery degradation. Since then, Tesla owners have been measuring and sharing their battery degradation data – and the results have been surprising. Tesla owners who contributed to this data first drained their EV batteries down to 0%, then charged fully them to 100%. This is to get a consistent measurement on how much energy a battery can hold. Despite the data, many people wonder why lithium-ion batteries in phones and laptops can barely hold a charge after a few years, while lithium-ion EV batteries don’t suffer the same fate. Well, according to lithium-ion battery cells studies, after 500-800 charging cycles and 100,000 to 150.000 miles a battery’s charging capacity drops to around 70%. However, most EV owners don’t typical drain their batteries to 0% or 100%. This increases the battery life significantly. Based on study estimates, owners who practice partial charging generally see degradation after 1,200-1,500 charging cycles and 350,000 miles of life. Because study data on EV battery life is limited, the data provided by real owners, as mentioned above, is much more valuable. It is important to note, charging habits are not the only contribution factors to battery life as factors like temperature and usage patterns also play a role. As stated, most owners don’t typically run their batteries to 0%, and by default a Tesla battery stops charging at 80%. This is to reduce battery strain.To even further reduce battery strain, Tesla may limit Fast Charging speeds. All of these factors combined are Tesla’s safeguard to help protect your vehicle, ensure you have a great experience with your luxury EV as well as allow for an expansive lifespan (unlike phone and laptop batteries). In running some regression analysis on the user-provide data, I found that there was some high volatility. This is likely due to the factor that the data is user-reported, and it is not being measured in a controlled environment. When Eindhoven University of Technology Systems and Control Professor, Maarten Steinbuch, looked at this data, he found that "on average the batteries have 92% remaining at 240.000 km. If the linear behavior would continue, then the ‘lifetime’ (still 80% capacity left) can be calculated as follows: 92-80 = 12% times 45,000 km = 540,000 km.” I also looked at another studied from YouTuber and battery aficionado Jehu Garcia. He tested some early Tesla batteries and found that without use, batteries degraded at about .35% per year. Which means, after about 285 years, these batteries will be almost completely dead. Working with the figure that batteries will retain more than 80% of their capacities for up 310,000 miles and considering that the average US drives about 13,5000 miles, on average, a Tesla battery does not need replacing for around 23 years. The point is, by the time your Tesla battery wears out, we’ll be in a totally new world - and likely won’t even be driving ourselves anymore. In fact, Elon Musk recently stated that he thinks in 20 years we won’t even have steering wheels in cars. So, when it comes to the lifespan of your Tesla battery, rest easy. It will likely outlast the rest of your car. The exterior appearance changed nothing except for a hollow caused by the shot. Just after test, we observed the voltage slightly drop and the temperature rose at first, but the voltage rose up again and kept more than 3.3 V(CCV). Temperature of the cell was also becoming more and more stable and finally kept constant around 45 °C. That’s how the battery cell provided the electricity for the light and it works well. Toshiba creates a battery: for cars that offers 320km of autonomy in 6 minutes of charge. One of the biggest problems of electric cars could be history thanks to a new Toshiba battery. The Japanese company has just presented a battery for electric cars that in only 6 minutes of loading offers 320 kilometers of use. The new generation of Toshiba car batteries, based on Ion-Lithium, is focused on changing one of the most well-known drawbacks of electric cars, charging times. Although companies like Tesla have managed to improve the speed of charge of their batteries, it still takes about an hour to have most of the battery charged. Depending on the type of electric car or even the type of battery that is selected, these vehicles could take several hours to charge. The new Toshiba battery offers high energy density and reduced charge time due to the use of titanium oxide doped with niobium. This element is also used in solar panels or even in superconducting images, such as those used in particle accelerators. After 5,000 charge / discharge cycles it maintains 90% of its original capacity. The battery is not yet in production, has been tested a prototype with a capacity of 50Ah, hence has extrapolated the results to what may be the future of this technology charging. Perhaps one of the most important details for the future of this battery is that after 5,000 charge / discharge cycles, it maintains 90% of its original capacity. This will result in an electric car would not have to change battery after a few years of use, even end up with rental programs. Toshiba hopes to start mass-producing this battery in 2019. For now only the electric cars of Suzuki and Mitsubishi use their batteries, also some brands of buses. Toshiba faces companies like Panasonic, associated with Tesla, which is nowadays one of the most important vehicle companies in the world.

Worth Upgrade?? Neato Lithium Ion Batteries (Watch if you own a Neato!) This is my review and installation of the lithium ion batteries for the Neato robotic vacuum. Short answer is that for the price, they should be a no brainer if they live up to the history and technology of Lithium Ion batteries. They are twice the price of NiMD (old batteries), but should last at least 3 times as long, the company states 4 times as long effectively cutting the cost of batteries year of year by 3 quarters.
