It’s cheap food. It may be easy and good for your wallet, but it’s bad for your health and cholesterol levels and you’ll pay the price later in life. Animal Protein The saturated fats and “marble fat” found in meat, pork, poultry and shell-fish is horrible for your health and cholesterol levels. I’ve noticed even grass-fed meat and free-range poultry can still cause high cholesterol in some of my patients, especially the “sensitive” ones. Limit your intake and focus more on vegetable proteins and fish - especially wild-caught salmon. Eggs Eggs can be good or bad. All the cholesterol and fat is located in the egg YOLK, which is why most “experts” say you should only consume egg whites. However, most of the nutrients, antioxidants and half the essential amino acids (protein) are also found in the yolk. The problem is when you COOK the yolk - such as hard-boiled, scrambled and fried eggs. The heat oxidizes the egg and damages both the structure of the protein and fat. So the healthiest way to eat eggs is raw or lightly cooked, so the yolk is still runny. Don’t fry it with butter or vegetable fats. And make sure it’s organic, free-range eggs. Baked Foods/Carbs (Snacks Too) Baked foods such as muffins, cakes, breads, donuts, croissants, rolls, cookies, danishes, scones, pie, etc… The types of foods most people eat in the morning when they’re in a rush, or with their coffee or at work as a snack… These are all bad because they contain hydrogenated and saturated fats, as well as dairy. But before I start with the exercises, I want to first discuss the REAL CAUSE of high cholesterol… something that most doctors don’t know Back in 1998 my parent’s blood work both showed high cholesterol levels. To make a long story short, we tried everything… Cholesterol lowering “statin” drugs - but these just had a ton of negative side-effects, as I’m sure you know. Change in lifestyle -- better diet, exercise, rest, etc.. -- this did help in the long-run, but it requires a lot more discipline and sacrafices Supplements, herbs and vitamins - most were just a waste of time and money. Only about 6-7 key ingredients had a magical effect. And I’ll tell you which ones at the end of this short presentation What I discovered through all of these things we tested is that the real cause of high cholesterol is genetics and the change in your HORMONES due to AGING! And this is why the older we get, the higher the cholesterol levels. And why women who go through menopause, all of a sudden have high cholesterol… Again, the change in hormones. And this is why teenagers and people in their 20’s rarely have cholesterol problems and yet, they live a very unhealthy life-style. Exercise And this is where the correct type of exercise can make improvements in your “youth hormones”, which will eventually cause an improvement in your cholesterol and lipid levels. One of the best ways to improve your “youth” hormones and help reverse aging, is by utilizing “resistant exercise”. Basically, lifting weights! This can be done with free weights, cables, machines or even your own bodyweight. Thus, this can be done almost anywhere, anytime -- no machines or gyms. When you lift weights, you increase testosterone, growth hormones, thyroid hormones and other “youth” hormones, which naturally help “fix” many health problems over time -- one of them being high cholesterol. And don’t worry, you’re not going to get “buffed” out - especially women. That’s just genetics and lots of steroids. Walking The next best exercise is walking. Again, you can do it anywhere, anytime. Walking is great because it is AEROBIC (with oxygen), while lifting weights is ANAEROBIC (without oxygen). You need both. However, as your fat cells shrink, the fat cell not only releases triglycerides, but cholesterol too. Many people do not know the fat cells are filled with both. The excess cholesterol needs to either be eliminated through the liver and gallbladder (bile) or be recycled. This is all a normal process on ketosis. Hey guys, I want to talk about what will happen if your cholesterol went high on a ketogenic diet. The first thing you should know is that when you lose weight, the fat cells actually shrink. They won’t go away completely, you can’t get rid of the fat cells but you can shrink it. Second thing you need to know is inside that fat cell you have, triglycerides and cholesterol. A lot of people don’t realize that cholesterol is also stored in the fat cells. As the fat cell shrinks, you can burn triglycerides for fuel but you cannot burn cholesterol, it is not a fuel source. It is going to be eliminated to the body as you lose weight. As the fat cell is squeezed, the cholesterol is going to increase in the blood and is going to go in the liver and comes out to the bile. As long as your liver is healthy and you’re eating a lot of vegetables, and you have enough bile, you are totally fine even if your LDL is fine. The key thing is to make sure that your triglycerides are low because if you are not using your triglycerides as a fuel then there is a problem, you are probably eating too much sugar but when you are in ketogenic diet and you are doing it correctly and your triglycerides are low and your HDL and LDL is high, all that means is that you are burning more LDL and there is no bad effects that are going to happen, just keep your vegetables high and as you keep closer to your weight loss goal, that will level out and come back normal. You've probably heard a lot about it...and so you may think cholesterol is always "bad" for you. But the truth is: cholesterol plays an essential role in keeping us healthy. Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance that's found in every one of our cells. Our bodies use it for many things, like forming cell membranes, producing Vitamin D and other hormones, and even making bile acids that help us digest foods. Cholesterol travels around the body through the vascular system. But blood is watery, and cholesterol is fatty and, just like oil and water, they don't mix well. So to circulate in the bloodstream properly, cholesterol is carried in small bundles called lipoproteins that are made of fat (also called "lipids") on the inside and proteins on the outside. There are different kinds of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol. We're going to talk about the two main ones. Stick with me now....Here comes the heart of the story. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is the "bad" kind of cholesterol. It carries most of the cholesterol in the blood and delivers it throughout the body. High levels of LDL can lead to cholesterol deposits in the vascular walls, creating plaques that sometimes narrow or even totally block blood vessels. That's called atherosclerosis (or hardening of the arteries) and it's why this kind of cholesterol is "bad". The higher the LDL level, the greater your chance of having a heart attack, stroke or developing several other serious conditions. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is the "good" kind of cholesterol. HDL helps clear cholesterol, carrying it back to your liver where the liver removes it from your body. That's REALLY good. Having high HDL levels usually protects you from developing cardiovascular disease. This is where the plot thickens. Some people can have high HDL levels and still be at risk for heart disease because the HDL is dysfunctional....It doesn't work right. The cholesterol in our bloodstream comes from two sources. About 75% is produced by our own liver and about 25% comes from foods we eat that are from animals. Actually, our bodies naturally produce all the cholesterol we need for normal functioning, but sometimes, genetics can cause us to produce too much of the "bad" kind or too little of the "good" kind...or the kind that just doesn't work properly. In addition to any inherited predisposition, other factors that can influence our cholesterol production that we cannot change are age and gender. There is a shift towards worse cholesterol numbers as we get older. As a Registered Dietician, here's what I tell my patients: Stop smoking, lose weight (even a little can make a big difference!), and exercise (just 30 minutes a day of moderate activity can help). Eat a diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-fiber foods like oatmeal, and certain fish or other foods that contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Steer clear of saturated fats like those found in red meats, full-fat dairy products, and transfats that are in some store-bought baked goods. There are also medicines (such as statins) that can help you reach recommended cholesterol levels. It's important to regularly have your doctor do a simple blood test (called a 'lipoprotein profile') to see "what's up". Having cholesterol levels in check is essential for good health at any age. What low cholesterol foods will do is helping your body to get rid of fat and decrease the chances of a heart attack or circulation problems. Fat is a very important component of our everyday diet but you should avoid trans fats and replace them by healthier unsaturated fats like vegetable oils. The key for lowering the chances of having a heart attack is to exercise and also to decrease the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL - Low Density Lipoprotein) in your body. You can achieve this by adopting a good low cholesterol diet food list. As the first rule you should limit the consumption of saturated fat in your daily diet. Animal foods are the ones containing cholesterol. Non animal foods like fruits and vegetables contain no cholesterol. Among this healthy fruits you can eat you can find: apples, strawberries, raisins, blackberries, dates, oranges, grapefruit and prunes. All this natural foods are rich soluble fiber foods that will help your body tow lower your bad cholesterol levels and increase good ones. Other fiber rich foods that you should take to achieve your objective are the consumption of vegetables and grains as lentils, beans, peas, broccoli, soybeans,, walnuts, ground flax, sweet potatoes, oatmeal and Brussels sprouts. Not all fats are bad four our bodies, in fact our bodies need fat. But the thing is to choose healthy fats over unhealthy fats to lower bad cholesterol in our system. You can eat tuna or fishes like salmon, anchovies, sardines and mackerel. You may also complement your low cholesterol diet food list with fish oil capsules. You can also get monounsaturated fats from olive oil, olives, canola oil, avocado, pecans, peanuts, pistachio nuts and peanut butter. Olive oil should be included in a heart-healthy diet in place of saturated or trans fats. Use it for cooking or to make dressings for salads and veggies. 6. Almonds: Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, minerals, B-complex vitamins, and vitamin E. Research shows regular consumption of almonds might reduce elevated cholesterol by nearly 20 percent. Almonds make a great snack or healthy topping for a salad or side dish. 7. Soy and Soy Foods: The protein in soy appears to have a beneficial impact on high cholesterol. Eating two servings of tofu, soy milk, or soybeans could reduce cholesterol levels by as much as five percent. Soy is also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. 8. Orange Juice: Orange juice is best known as a breakfast drink and source of vitamin C, but it's also high in potassium, magnesium, vitamin A and B-complex vitamins. One research study also found that drinking orange juice every day lowered cholesterol levels and suggested that orange juice might also be helpful for people who didn't have elevated cholesterol. 9. Avocado: Avocado is an excellent source of monounsaturated fatty acids and plant sterols that can help to reduce cholesterol. Research suggests that adding avocado to a heart-healthy diet can increase the cholesterol-lowering benefit. Avocado is also rich in protein, fiber, B-complex vitamins, vitamin K, and several minerals. 10. Salmon or Tuna: Fatty ocean fish such as salmon and tuna are high in omega-3 fatty acids and can help reduce cholesterol levels, especially when you eat fish instead of saturated fats from red meats. Herring, trout and sardines are also high in omega-3s. Fish is also high in protein and minerals. 11. Lentils: Lentils are high in fiber, and research suggests that adding lentils to a diet can reduce cholesterol levels as long as the overall calorie count is not increased. Diet as effective as medication in lowering cholesterol. According to a study published in the November 2011 Journal of the American Medical Association, the intake of plant-based foods can reverse the problem of high cholesterol as effectively or even more so than the popular medication type known as statins. This medication, despite its known side effects such as sapping energy levels, is currently prescribed to reduce cholesterol in 25% of all adults over the age of 45 in the US. Scientists in this study thus evaluated the effect of diet alone, and found that vegetarian fare consumed by two different groups of people reduced cholesterol at least as much as the statin medications. Moreover, the researchers discovered that the group consuming even higher amounts of certain plant-based foods such as soy proteins, nuts, oats, peas and beans saw three times greater improvement. Scientists, many thanks for this encouraging study that demonstrates yet another benefit of plant-based fare.
