CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A local wife and mother had encouraging news for women surviving breast cancer. Mary Lou McClure said a new treatment helped her overcome a common side effect from treatment. A part of her life, the intimacy, can often can be painful after cancer treatment especially when hormone therapy was not an option. The wife and mother was at the Women's Center at Mercy Health West and talked about a treatment now being used for a whole new purpose. Following successful treatment for breast cancer, she suddenly couldn't continue a therapy that might put her at odds for that cancer coming back. McClure shared, "My doctor and I decided that estrogen therapy was risky." So she wasn't sure what to do about some of the painful side effects that followed, especially something called vaginal atrophy. Dr. Elizabeth Venard of Mercy Health West Hospital said, "It causes people to have vaginal dryness, painful intercourse." So McClure made the decision to try and overcome those symptoms with the help of a simple ten minute office procedure. It uses a laser called the Mona Lisa Touch. The procedure simply attaches one of two sterile probes to the Mona Lisa Touch laser. The machine is then put on standby for pre-programmed settings. Once that's completed, everybody in the room puts on face protection and laser eye protection. Then the vaginal probe is placed in the body and it restores health to the vaginal tissues. For McClure the difference she felt with intimacy she said, "It was immediate. It was literally immediate." She's now living life the way she wanted to with family and friends and with healthy intimacy back in her marriage." There don't appear to be any serious side effects from the treatment but each treatment is about $600. Women may need up to three treatments. In most cases it is not covered by medical insurance plans. Local 12 News would like to thank Mary Lou for sharing a tough topic that is important to many young survivors.

UC Davis Personal Health Network PI: Jill Joseph, University of California, Davis Moving cancer treatments out of specialized centers and into local clinics or home care could significantly lower healthcare costs. Often patients have to travel large distances to receive treatments at cancer centers. In low resource settings in the developing world, there may not be any options for cancer treatment. Surgical treatments carry infection risks and in many places there are not enough surgeons to treat all of the patients in need. Technologies such as targeted ultrasound and light-based treatments could allow providers with less specialized training to treat more patients for less money. Tools for monitoring chemotherapy patients at home between treatments could eliminate travel and office visits. Mobile health strategies for collecting data about high-risk populations could lead to new interventions to directly impact cancer screening rates. To address these issues, the Center is focusing on the identification, prototyping and early clinical assessment of innovative point-of-care technologies for the treatment, screening, diagnosis and monitoring of cancers. A major aspect of this effort involves assessing early stage technologies in terms of clinical needs, market demands, setting appropriateness and commercialization strategies. The integrated multidisciplinary team, consisting of engineers, clinicians, public health practitioners, and technology transfer experts, is currently evaluating technologies in various stages of development for suitability across a range of primary care and non-traditional healthcare settings. The Center comprises an Administrative Core, a Clinical Needs Assessment and Impact Analysis Core, a Training Core and a Prototype Development and Testing Core divided into two parts, the Alpha and Beta Cores, which will both be available to Center projects, depending on the stage of technology development. http://www.bu.edu/cftcc/

Aquaculture already produces more than half of the world’s seafood and is growing rapidly. California is a major consumer of seafood products, importing over 90%. Aquaculture production in California is small, at least in part, due to public concerns and government regulations. Presented by California Sea Grant, Moss Landing Marine Labs, Save our Shores, and Lift Economy, this forum seeks to bring together diverse stakeholders to find possible pathways for developing responsible aquaculture in California. The forum will provide objective information on potential benefits and concerns with aquaculture while examining possible solutions to help address concerns. Environmental stewardship is cherished in California. Come learn how low-impact/regenerative aquaculture opportunities in California could enhance natural resources, reduce pressure on wild fisheries and decrease our reliance on imported aquaculture products that may be environmentally-unsound. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death among Americans and takes a toll on communities across the United States. One of the effective ways to reduce our nation's burden from cancer is to ensure that high quality screening services are available and accessible to all Americans. Screening for cervical, colorectal, and breast cancers is supported by sound scientific evidence, and helps find these diseases early when they are easiest to treat. This session of Grand Rounds explored new ways that public health can increase the rate of evidence-based cancer screening, and decrease disparities in screening rates. Viewers learned about the effectiveness of screening, successful organized cancer screening programs in the United States and abroad, and opportunities with the Affordable Care Act. The session concluded with future directions for CDC and the nation's public health system to improve cancer screening. Here Is A Little Bit Of My Story...... I was introduced to network marketing in 1999 after meeting my husband, Gary. Our first meeting was a hilarious one. We first met at the Copacabana, an infamous nightclub in New York City. When Gary first approached me, he gave me his business card trying to prospect me for his business. Even though I did not give him my number, I called him back and we set up a meeting a couple of days later where he picked me up after work. I worked for a busy shoe store in the fashion district of New York City and I was totally wiped out from a long day at work. He asked me if I would mind going over to his office. I agreed. We headed to a busy office, where I sat in a room with about twenty other people. We sat through a business presentation for a company I had never heard of. When it was over, I was kind of drawn back because I had never before heard of the type of information that was presented. That is when I realized that there had to be something more out there for me. Here I was, a 22-year-old, single mother of one at the time. I was going to college full time and working a full-time job. I felt as if I were going nowhere fast. Gary invited me to a Saturday event and we drove a couple of hours to get there. I could not understand why this event was going to be so long. Sitting at the day-long training, I kept wondering what I was doing there. Everything changed for me when a couple went on stage to address the audience. The wife explained how the company had changed their lives so much and how she could stay home with her children without having to work a full-time job. I realized then that I was killing myself working and going to college full time—and for what? I was missing my son's first years of life because I had no time off. I was heading down a path that had not worked for either of my parents. I finally decided to join my husband, Gary to work together in our current company to help change our family and other family's destiny for generations to come!! The topics and teachings of this blog comes from what we've learned from our experience of over 16 years in network marketing. We have used these same techniques when we first joined our current company in 2008 and after just 3 years in the company we made the highest level in leadership. Each year since joining our current company, we have both DOUBLED our team and income EACH YEAR!!! Because of our successes in our current company, we've been asked to speak at Leadership events throughout the United States plus enjoy trips we've earned trips to places such as Orlando, Florida, an Alaskan cruise, New Orleans and most recently Oahu, Hawaii. The Sacramento County Teachers of the Year program recognizes excellence in teaching within the county's schools. Participating districts nominate individual teachers to receive this special recognition. The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) also nominates one of its teachers to compete. At the Teachers of the Year awards recognition dinner, two teachers are identified as the Sacramento County Teachers of the Year and are then eligible to participate in the statewide program. All of the school districts within the Sacramento County, local charter schools, and SCOE, are invited to participate in the program each year. The process culminates with a September awards dinner where all district nominees are introduced by students or former students, and the nominees themselves address a crowd of more than 300 people. 00:00 Introduction by Rebecca Siegert McGill & Jeff Zahniser, Sacramento County Teachers of the Year 2018 01:13 Introduction by Sacramento County Superintendent David W. Thriveology - www.thriveology123.com Thriveology is a 100% "Eco-Friendly" facility that offers comprehensive, natural health and wellness services for men, women, and children. Hi, I'm Dr. Carly Letzt Carney. I'm a chiropractor. And I am Dr. Mark Carney. I am a naturopathic doctor and an acupuncturist. We are a husband and wife team. Dr. Mark: At Your Healing Place, our philosophy is that the body is designed to be healthy and that it has an innate ability to heal itself. What we do here is support that natural healing ability using a variety of methods. I offer people options that they never even knew they had. These are natural solutions other than medications and surgery. At Your Healing Place, we have a comprehensive family practice and the types of patients that we see and the conditions that we treat are so vast that a typical day might look like a child coming in with ear infections, a woman who has hormonal imbalances such as hot flashes, an elderly man with prostate issues, a couple who has been unsuccessful trying to conceive and a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. All of these patients will receive a unique, holistic approach. Irwin: "Several years, many, many years, like 10 or 15, I started to develop a numbness in both my feet, and literally, when I walked, I had no feeling of where to put my feet because my mind learned that. I went to orthopedic doctors, orthopedic surgeons, I went to a neurosurgeon, finally a neurologist, and the answer was, 'Nothing we can do except maybe we can stop it from getting worse.' I said, 'What about getting better?' He said, 'No chance. The nerves are gone and you have to get used to being in a wheelchair.' So I was about at the end of my rope when someone suggested Dr. Carney. I was a little skeptical but I came and I started some intensive acupuncture, and it started to get a little better and then a little better. At first, I couldn't get on the table at all, then I could, and now I don't even need a little box to stand on. My results were totally amazing. I could stand on a dime and tell you if it's face up or face down, almost. At one point, I wouldn't even know the dime was there." Dr. Mark: We offer acupuncture, massage therapy, physical therapy for the spine, chiropractic, nutrition, homeopathy, herbal medicine and naturopathic medicine. One of the things that makes Your Healing Place so incredibly unique is that we are the first and only Eco-Clinic in Colorado. What I mean by that is that we used recyclable materials, renewable resources, energy efficient equipment and we avoided the use of toxic chemicals. The reasons we did this were to be role models in our community and to offer our patients and our staff a healthy environment. Dr. Carly: Your Healing Place is a community and we work with people from all walks of life, and we work with newborns all the way to the elderly. I'm classically trained as a chiropractor and my approach is very gentle, yet very effective. Some of the issues that we see amazing results with are sciatica, low back pain, neck pain, disc herniation and stress relief. We provide support to women during pregnancy and we also provide support to couples having issues with fertility. Ann: "I woke up when I was a sophomore in college and I had pain shooting down the side of my leg. When I would get up to walk, when I would put pressure on my foot, my leg would kind of give out. I went to a few different doctors. They took MRIs and did x-rays, and there was nothing that they could see that was wrong, and they kept telling me that my problem was that I just wasn't standing upright, but I couldn't stand upright because it hurt. Everybody had tried to help me and steroid injections didn't help, but when I came to Your Healing Place, it was a much different approach. About a month of coming here twice a week, I felt a million times better. I actually could sleep, I could think. I went from not being able to move—I couldn't even go to the bathroom by myself—to going skiing 35 times. I don't know how to thank Dr. Carly for everything she has done for me and what Your Healing Place has done for me." Dr. Carly: We absolutely love what we do here and it's an honor to help each of our patients live healthier and happier lives. Dr. Mark: Please have a look at our website to learn more about the different services that we offer and call our office to find out about the special discounts for this month. Thriveolgoy 7120 E.
