See part one here - https://youtu.be/nhBw3llpQ7M See part three here - https://youtu.be/sz7YTBvYizk Join us on our journey as we continue to rebuild, refit and prepare our Formosa 51 Sailboat for our continued cruising journey. We have always loved the Formosa, bought one (on a bit of a whim) late in 2014, moved aboard this one right away and started to do our refit while living board. We are avid fans of Cruising Outpost and Good Ole Boat (Good Old Boat) magazines and love the ideas we get from them. In this second part of a 3 part series on removing, rebuilding/repairing a dorado box, polishing and prepping the bronze as well as all of the reinstallation, this entry will focus specifically on the preparation for the wooden dorado box and how to improve upon the frame that was there originally as well as refinish the box itself to look great again. If you haven't read the first of the blog series, please click on http://svdreamchaser.blogspot.com/2015/12/leaking-dorado-Part1.html to open up a new page with the blog post in it. After removing the dorado box and mounting slats from the deck, I took a good look at them and realized that he design of how these boxes were mounted was flawed. There was only one egress point for any rain/green water that may get in the cowl vent to exit the box, and that was aft of the opening to the bunk below. So even if the water that got in the box was not over the depth of the internal flute/chimney, it was still allowing water to potentially get down between the bronze tube and the deck. I wanted to improve upon the installation in a few different ways. The first was that I wanted the new frame to not just be a couple of small slats of spare/scrap wood but rather a deliberate design that would be stronger than the slats were as well as allow me to create additional value and function in the single mounting system. I started with a piece of 3/4" red oak wood that was cut to fit inside the base of the dorado box. This will be mounted to the deck of the boat and the dorado box will be screwed into the mounting frame horizontally at the bottom of the dorado box into the side of the hard wood frame. For me the solution was to improve upon this and build a V-shaped baffle on the mounting plate that would direct the majority of any green/rain water that gets in through the cowl vent to exit the sides of the dorado box before ever getting to the large 4" wide opening that vents air below. Then if for some reason some water does get past the baffle, then there is still the previous exit from the aft side of the dorado box. I drew out the pattern on the piece of red oak. It started with a 3/4" frame all the way around the permitter that would act as the anchor points for the dorado box onto the mounting bracket. It then required some measurement to ensure that the V-shaped baffle that I am pointing out was positioned correctly so as to allow enough room for the tube that extends down into the bunk below to pass through it. It also required that the baffles be as far after a possible to allow maximum water to pass out the sides of the Dorado and therefore reduce the chance of it leaking down into the deck though that opening into the bunk. The next step was to use a drill and circular saw to cut out all of the center areas of the frame to only leave the portion I wanted to remain. I wanted to keep this entire mounting base in 1 piece so to accommodate the places for the water to pass through, I chose to use a router bit to notch those locations without cutting all the way through the 3/4" red oak which allowed the piece to stay all together. I then lined up the new egress points from the base and marked the sides of the dorado box and dutifully cut those out as well using the same router bit. That was a bit nerve racking and I checked 4 and 5 times before making any cuts. I sanded all of the parts down with 150 grit sandpaper followed by 220 on an orbital palm sander. This allowed them to all get smooth, take any scratches and imperfection out of the dorado box and then setup to mix the epoxy. I use West Systems Epoxy and always use the pumps that mount to the top of each can to ensure you have an accurate dispensing of the material for the mixture. My harder pump was not working today so I eyeballed it, which I think is part of the reason why it took so long for this to harden and firmly setup. After 24 hours it was still a bit "gummy" where there were drips or runs and they had to be sanded down. After mixing the epoxy and stirring it for at least 60 seconds (I usually do 90 seconds to be safe) it was time to start painting the epoxy onto the wood. By covering wood with epoxy you essentially create a plastic encased piece of wood that is water proof and can extend the time it would take to get rot from moisture exposure. http://tulasendlesssummer.com Which is better for cruising and live aboard, a Trawler or a Sailboat. We get this question all the time since we have lived full time on both. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Sailboats are cheaper to travel in, more peaceful underway, and reliable. Trawlers have more space especially on deck, are powerful straight into the wind, and don't stay heeled over underway. We review our take on both style cruising boats.

ALWAYS FRESH WATER!! ONE OWNER!!! When the first Monticello was introduced to the market it was an instant hit. The single level floor plan plus the sharp "clipper" bow as well as a more robust hull construction redefined the image of the historical term "houseboat". With large engines and a sturdy hull the Monticello was ready for bays, rivers and sounds and not confined to lakes as a floating home in a covered dock. The Monticello quickly became known as a "let's go somewhere boat". Pegasus One is an outstanding example of this revolutionary brand. Her upscale interior is spectacular. She is an all option boat with many additional upgrades. Her engines are well cared for and very low time. The entire boat has always been professionally maintained (records available) with an open checkbook since new. The sellers have decided to downsize which creates a terrific buying opportunity. THERE IS NO NICER MONTICELLO ON THE MARKET!!! Trades will be considered! Horizon Gets Adventurous with Its New Yacht Model Horizon’s new FD87 Skyline yacht stands out with its tall profile, large internal volume, efficient design, and top-notch beach club with bar. Making its debut at the Palm Beach boat show this week, the Horizon FD87 Skyline has more than just a high-riding profile. The unusually spacious design by Cor D. Rover is underpinned by an unusual hull that gives it a minimal draft, excellent fuel efficiency, and little drag. Based on Horizon’s earlier FD85 launch, the tall, blue Horizon also has about 25 percent more internal volume than most yachts its size. The FD87 could well turn out to be a one-off design, since its owner wanted an enclosed upper bridge rather than the yard’s standard raised-pilothouse design. The ability to cruise anywhere, either in air-conditioned comfort or with the heat on full blast, was at the heart of this request. The enclosed space also serves as a second saloon, with a bar and three stools in the center, long lounge to starboard, and chair and desk on the port side. It’s an intimate space that also offers an exceptional view. The owner also didn’t give up the outdoor amenities: Behind this area is an exterior deck, with a large hot tub in the center. Rover’s interior looks like an open-plan pied-à-terre, with large glass walls in the saloon and master suite, high ceilings, and openings onto the back deck and the portside walkway. The space also has a dining table at the front. The FD87’s accommodations include a large master suite on the main deck, four guest staterooms on the lower deck, and quarters at the stern for three crew. The designers made good use of the boat’s wide 23-foot beam, creating the largest beach club for a yacht this size. The club overlooking the extended swim platform is a real club, with a bar and stools, not to mention a television, fridge, icemaker, and sink. A lounge fills up the other side of the room. Despite the enclosed bridge, Skyline has exceptional outer social areas, including the lower cockpit, which has four lounges for alfresco dining, and the foredeck, a massive social area that includes lounges and sunbeds, and wide walkways. Rover made full use of the boat’s space. Though it’s not visible, the FD87’s bulbous high-performance piercing bow (HPPB) under the water gives it an edge when it comes to range and fuel efficiency. The boat has a range of 1,780 miles at 10 knots with its twin 1,136 hp Caterpillar C18 engines. It will hit a top speed of 16 knots. Horizon isn’t known for its adventurous designs, but this boat and the FD85 should put it up there with the Italian and Dutch builders when it comes to melding form and function.

Allseas Yachts was founded by Bernny Alls, an old timer in steel boats manufacturing. Benny began his career in boat building in 1975 and began building steel commercial fishing boats from 48' to 100 ft in length. He trained his son, Tim Alls, to weld and the two of them were soon building some of the most rugged steel commercial boats on the market. Their clients needed boats that could endure the extreme weather of Alaska and the bearing Seas. Hulls needed to be tough enough to handle occasional rocks as well as large logs in the water. Stability was a huge factor so that these boats could fish in rough water weather which was so common in Southern Alaska. Experience has tough the builders the thickness of the hulls needed to be tough enough to handle occasional rocks as well as large logs in the water. Stability was a huge factor so that these boats could fish in rough weather which was so common in Southeast Alaska. Benny and Tim had to learn by experience the thickness of glass and window spacing's required to survive 75 foot waves that fishermen sometimes come upon unexpectedly. With Benny's experience in building tough steel hulls and Tim's experience in the hi-tech industry an unusual balance was achieved between old school thinking and new school technology. Sarissa is a spectacular 42.6 m carbon globetrotter. She is one of the most recent additions to the portfolio of performance yachts built by the Dutch superyacht yard Vitters Shipyard. Sarissa is the largest carbon sloop built in the Netherlands to date. Following Vitters' previous carbon high performance sailing yachts, this increase in size is not the only development. Sarissa's hydraulic and deck systems provide improved reaction speed, load and stiffness to safely facilitate the sailing performance she was designed for. Other custom technical features are an in-house developed hydraulic steering system with rudder feedback, as well as a unique system of back staysandrunning stays to operate both her cruising andracing sail configurations. I filmed this excellent ocean going yacht down at Belfast Marina today. Even with my untrained nautical eye she looked great. Custom-designed and built by yachtsman adventurer Peter Smith, a New Zealand boat builder, long distance cruiser and offshore sailor, and designer of the Rocna anchor range. He currently is living and cruising on his custom-designed self-built yacht, Kiwi Roa. The result of Peter’s lifelong experience both racing and long distance cruising, she’s a 15.5 m (52′) sloop built from 10 mm aluminium alloy plate (up to 25 mm in some sections), displacing 27 tonnes, built to go anywhere and handle the worst that the seas of this planet can throw at her. Peter’s recent voyaging includes the 5,500 nautical mile passage across the torrid Southern Ocean from New Zealand to Chile. He’s spent three years exploring Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic islands of the Falklands and South Georgia. over a four year period in England, Kiwi Roa is the result of Peter’s lifelong experience both racing and long distance cruising, not to mention professional boat-building. She’s at heart an expedition yacht, a sloop built from 10 mm aluminium alloy plate (up to 25 mm in some sections), displacing 27 tonnes, built to go anywhere and handle the worst that the oceans of this planet can throw at her. Kiwi Roa was envisioned as the ultimate ocean-going home, and Peter lives aboard on a permanent basis. Launched in 1994 at Ipswich, she has since clocked up over 80,000 nautical miles and is still going strong in some of the world’s toughest environments. Kiwi Roa is named after the great spotted variant of New Zealand’s native flightless bird. A large grey kiwi seemed an appropriate metaphor for an unpainted aluminium yacht flying the New Zealand flag. She was built in Colchester England, in an old listed (protected) Essex barn which was being used as a boat building yard by Sammy Sampson. Kiwi Roa built over the period 1989–1994; some 22,000 man hours compressed into 4.5 years. It is unlikely a vessel like Kiwi Roa could ever be built commercially – the man hours and detail for a boat of this size would be uneconomical and very few if any yards have the experience or the capacity for the minute-by-minute supervision required. The basic layout would be four cabins, one saloon, a walk-in engine room, a decent forepeak, and a large usable lazarette, necessitating a length of over 50′ (15 m). The ability to claw off a lee shore in all conditions, while carrying a full load for the cruising live-aboard lifestyle, was essential. That load was to include 1200 L of water, another 1200 L of fuel, plus up to a year’s supplies. Specifications LOA: 15.5 m (52′) Displacement: 27 t (60,000 lb) Draught: 1.8 m (6′) Design: Custom one-off Tim Drury / Peter Smith Construction: Aluminium plate, teak interior Rig: Sloop, all spars aluminium

New Arcadia Yachts Designs Unveiled in Cannes At the Cannes Yachting Festival, Arcadia Yachts announces breakthrough concepts for a bigger Sherpa and a new 154-foot superyacht that will soon become reality. Arcadia Yachts announced plans at the Cannes Yachting Festival to move forward with several new concepts that also represent breakthrough designs for yachting. The Italian builder has made its name by creating quiet, eco-friendly yachts that are based on how people use them, rather than by pure aesthetics. Saloons defined by floor-to-ceiling windows, the extensive use of solar panels, and climate-controlled winter gardens are just several of the innovations that Arcadia has pioneered since 2010. At the Cannes event, Arcadia announced it would have three lines going forward. Its Gamma A range features the original Arcadia design, from the A85 to the A115 models. Its new For.Th line (forward thinking) features a cool-looking, 154-foot steel-hulled yacht with a distinctive “prism” superstructure. Arcadia’s third line, the Sherpa, will see the original 55-footer supplemented by the Sherpa 72, which will be launched in the next 18 months. When it was introduced last year, the Sherpa 55 was a fresh take on the flybridge design. Looking more like a mini-expedition cruiser, the skydeck can transform from an open party deck into a climate-controlled space, thanks to the electrically activated side windows that turn the area into a convertible with the windows up. The Sherpa, as the name suggests, is also long on storage, with 1,500 square feet of usable storage space. The hull was designed at the National Physical Laboratory in England for hydrodynamic efficiency. The boat can reach 25 knots at top end, but at 10 knots, it consumes 11 gallons per hour. On top of that, customers can choose between one-, two-, and three-cabin layouts. In Cannes, Arcadia also announced plans for the Sherpa 72, which will hit the water in the next 18 months. The 72-foot length is complemented by a 22-foot beam for exceptional interior space. The designers created two large outdoor living areas on the main deck and flybridge to be significantly larger than other yachts in its size range. Like the 55, the big brother 72 has a convertible skylounge with the raised panels to be able to cruise in any type of climate. The 72 will also be powered by twin Volvo IPS engines. The IPS pods also deliver maneuverability, fuel efficiency, and low noise and vibration levels. Like the other Arcadias, the 72’s solar panels will let owners run most onboard equipment so, instead of loud, vibrating generators, the interior will stay whisper quiet. Arcadia’s new 154-foot steel-hulled superyacht, the first in its For.Th class, is a beauty designed by Hot Lab. The nearly-all-glass superstructure is shaped like a prism, creating an interplay of fragmented shapes and refracted light that bathes the interior. Hot Lab also created open-floor plans across the saloons and decks to maximize the sense of space. The master suite has a separate office, walk-in closet, and lateral terrace, measuring an impressive 550 square feet. Two VIP staterooms are positioned on the deck below. The main saloon, with its floor-to-ceiling doors, offers an almost seamless connection with the exterior deck. Perched atop the yacht, the 500-square-foot skydeck has sun lounges, a Jacuzzi, a wet bar, and multiple settees. It’s the perfect area for a soiree or alfresco dinner. The aft deck, measuring nearly 1,000 square feet, is ideal for an even larger group. The first new For.Th will also have a beach club and gym below-decks. Like Arcadia’s other two lines, this new 154-footer promises to be a breakthrough design when it reaches the water.

Lynx Educational Foundation Trailer for Lynx - America's Privateer The Privateer Lynx is a unique National Treasure. Launched in 2001 on plans dating from the War of 1812, the Lynx brings American history back from the past and immerses students in lessons about this nations founding and its defense of freedom. Today, the modern version of the Lynx serves as a floating classroom where students from a variety of institutions learn about the War of 1812 and the heroic struggle of privateer vessels to foil the British navy; they learn, as well, about the sea and sailing ships and about the teamwork required to keep a craft like the Lynx afloat. Students come on board the Lynx to partake in a hands-on interactive educational program that enhances personal achievement through teamwork, sail training and historical discussion. Participants step back in time as they learn to perform the duties of an 1812 privateer crew. One school teacher whose students recently sailed on the Lynx called this a truly amazing and memorable study trip! A student who sailed more extensively on the Lynx said that this experience had an immense impact on my lifeit taught me to deal with unexpected obstaclesand to accept more challenges and to face them. The Lynx educational program is endorsed by a number of California school boards and meets specific California State Standards 1 1/2 Hour Educational History Dockside Programs and 3 hour Educational History and Science Adventure Sails available in many west coast ports including Long Beach, San Diego, King Harbor/Redondo Beach, Oakland, Morro Bay, Monterey, Oxnard, Ventura and Oceanside. In a recent Marlin Magazine article, Viking President and CEO Pat Healey had this to say about the transition from the 70 to the 72, “The 70 Viking is an iconic boat. What we did, after building 36 of them over a period of five and a half years, is the same thing we accomplished with our other recent boat models, we just made it better.” So how do you improve on an already phenomenal boat? Starting with the hull performance, Viking changed the deadrise at the transom, removed the chines aft to gain additional beam on the boat, and shaped her to be more of a V-configuration, all of which made the 72 more slippery and resulted in a faster yacht. The hull is comprised of a mixture of E-glass and carbon fiber material that gives the hull more strength and durability, but also reduces the weight of the boat. Combine those high-grade materials with Viking’s vacuum-bagged resin-infusion process, and you get more speed and stiffness while continuing to reduce the weight. Part of the extra two feet added to this model went right to the cockpit, which is one of the amazing features on the 72 Enclosed Bridge. Of course the shaded observation mezzanine is a favorite among sportfish enthusiasts as it allows guests on the boat to watch the fishing action in the comfort of a leather seat, air-conditioned, with plenty of refreshment opportunities within reach. But the ‘fish-ability’ of the cockpit sets a standard in sportfishing. You can see the additional room behind the fighting chair that the extra two feet and beam have provided. There are two refrigerated boxes, an ice maker, bait boxes, tackle cabinet, livewell, tuna tubes, and ample storage place. And don’t forget the built-in space for the Seakeeper Gyro Stabilizer that has been built into the deck just forward of the lazarette. The interior of the Viking 72 Enclosed Bridge does not disappoint even the most distinguished of owners. Enjoy the addition of the circular staircase which leads to the enclosed bridge helm. The 72’s enclosed bridge is essentially a second salon on the boat, featuring a L-shaped sofa, table, another refrigerator, and an entertainment center in the event guests on board want to congregate upstairs. New owners of the 72EB can choose from multiple power options. The standard base model engine is twin MAN V12 1550hp diesels, but owners can choose to upgrade to CAT C-32A 1925hp engines, MTU Series 2000 V12 M96L 1945hp engines, or the MTU V16 M96L 2635hp engines. The largest engine package produced an average cruising speed of over 37 knots and hits 40 knots at top end with just an 80 percent engine load. “SAMOSET” represents a refreshingly rare diversion in a market that is dominated today by rather “plain Jane” center consoles and runabouts that hardly garner a 2nd look as they pass by. This boat is totally different; she’s well and purposefully proportioned. She’s elegant at the dock, refined on a cocktail cruise, and comfortable while watching the kids and grandkids Opti race. She is truly is one of the most high quality and beautifully finished runabouts out there. Doug Zurn nailed the design perfectly, blending timeless good looks and modern thoroughbred performance, this boat is an absolute blast to drive. Essentially a first time offering, she is in beautiful condition and should exceed the expectations of those inspecting her. Asking... $325,000

Built on the same proven hull as the 80 Tri-Deck, the Northern Marine 80 Series Raised Pilothouse yacht offers a lower profile and a superstructure that has been extended forward, evidence of an innovative and functional arrangement within. The full-beam master suite has been located amidships on the lower deck for an extra measure of stability and comfort on open ocean crossings. A stairway leads up to the main deck from a private foyer serving the owners and VIP suites. In the saloon, a large fixed lounge to port faces a large-screen TV and casual seating opposite. Just forward, a dining banquette is adjacent to an exceptionally well-equipped galley. A stairway descends from the pilothouse to the forward accommodations deck arranged with two ensuite guest staterooms; one with queen berth, the other with single berths for three. I had seen some special lights for boats. They had a two-way switch so they could be off, or red light, or white light. The red lighting is supposed to preserve your night vision. Unfortunately, they were expensive. This expense would be multiplied by three if I wanted one by the cabin entrance, one by the map table and another by the kitchen. While searching for an alternative, I found these 12 volt LED lights for trucks. I was able to fabricate this entire ceiling for less than what one of those special boat lights would have cost. This includes the foam, the FRP panels which are the visible part of the ceiling, all the wires, switches and all the LED lights themselves. Four switches control the ceiling. This lets me have low level red light and high intensity red light, as well as low and high intensity white lights. With all the white lights on, it is very bright and diffused lighting similar to a work-space lit by a lot of fluorescent lights. There were some nice looking map-lights that came with the boat. Unfortunately they had incandescent bulbs from 1975. I liked the look of the wooden lights though, and I found that after removing the incandescent fixture, it was easy to modify the fixture a bit to hold some of the truck LED lights as well.

This is the 2nd Greek RG-65 Class Race Leg 3. The entries reached to the eight from four of the 1st race. In this race I participate with my new RG-65 (see it with the blue sails) which finished building a day before the race. And because I did not tried it in the water I had many handling problems. Despite the settings I made to the sails after the 1st and 2nd leg the handling problem continued in that 3rd leg as well, and I hardly manage to finish the race. I also had problem with the jib. On Lake Macquarie NSW Australia with my de Havilland Hercules 18 foot half cabin. On a 2 day camping trip , also a chance to test the new hardtop roof I made. I found the roof very cool and provided excellent coverage from the hot summers day. It had minimal issues from the windy conditions the only difference was a higher center of gravity when walking around the very edge of the beams on the boat when going to the bow to lay anchor. I will look into lighter materials for an alternative to the ply top , perhaps poly-carbonate sheeting.. my next project will be to replace the ply flooring in the Sea Eagle . I will post some footage of the floor replacement hopefully this may help someone to keep there much loved old vessel on the water, it will be posted on U Tube as " replace that rotten floor in your boat DIY part 1"
