Child Care Business Coach http://www.childcare-marketing.com Do you use direct mail as a strategy for marketing your child care? Do you know how to tell if the campaign has been successful? Do you have a way to compare it to other marketing campaigns you're using for your child care? If not, then you are wasting your marketing dollars. Direct mail can be a powerful way to grab the attention of prospects for your child care that you aren't able to reach any other way. I've seen great success from my child care coaching clients who take a highly targeted, multi-step direct mail approach. First, you can target the lists for your direct mail campaigns and find 500 to 1000 of the best families that match the demographics of the ideal clients for your child care. Then send multiple pieces in a time frame of two to three weeks to your list. I do this when I promote my Child Care Success Summit training conference. I usually narrow down my list to my best clients, and then send this targeted list a succession of mailings to get them to take action. When you send out a couple mailings in a multi-step campaign, you would then send a follow-up mailing saying something like, "I didn't hear from you the first time....." This will typically double the response rate, so it really can be worth your while. Including some sort of lumpy mail or 3D mail is also a great way to get the attention of the prospects for your child care and can boost your success. So how do you measure the success of direct mail? A question that has popped up in my Insider's Circle group is about average response rate. Response rate is a very basic measurement of success (but not the only!) and can be used as one benchmark when looking at a campaign. To answer the questions out there, around 1 ½ % - 2 ½ % is the average response rate for direct mail. For example, if you did a mailing to 1000 people in your market, it would be a success if you received over 20 child care inquiries. However, there are so many strategies you can use to market your child care and it's really important to be able to measure the success of each campaign. This will help to compare marketing efforts and determine what's working. So another important metric to look at is ROI (return on investment), which will help you understand and maximize your revenue at your child care. Let's say that out of those 20 families that responded to the direct mail, you convert 8 families to enrollment. If each enrolling family is worth around $10,000 to you for the year (50 weeks x $200/week), the total revenue growth for you was $80,000 from this particular mail campaign. Then take a look at what you spent on the mailing. Let's say it cost you $8000 to mail out the 1000 pieces and it returned $80,000 in revenue. Then your ROI is 10:1 or 10x. In other words, for every marketing dollar you spent you gained $10 (10:1). This is much more powerful than only looking at your response rate. With this number you can compare the campaign to other marketing efforts to determine what is the most profitable for you and your child care. And remember, direct mail is just one form of marketing when you're working on growing your child care business. Don't forget to test and use multiple forms of media instead of just depending on one or two. This direct communication can be done face to face, sms, mailing, email, telephone, and other channels that allow the business to communicate with potential customers individually. Its history goes back to 1872 when Mr. Aaron Montgomery Ward, a Chicago based business man that made a fortune by selling products to rural customers through mail ordering. The big advantage of direct marketing is that it can be personalized and its results can be measured. In order to create successful direct and personalized marketing campaigns you need to have, create, or buy a good potential customers database. The better and more detailed information about your potential customers your database has, the better results you will achieve in your direct marketing campaign. Ex: If your campaign is to attract runners to participate in the race you are organizing, and if you will have a full marathon, half marathon, and 10 kilometer races possibilities for the participants, it was great if your customers database had data on which ones of the potential customers usually participates in a full marathon, which usually goes for the half, and what prefer a not so longer race and opt by the 10 kilometer option. This way you could segment your direct marketing campaign into three different campaigns: one targeting the 10 kilometer, other the half marathon, and the last one targeting the people that most probably will opt for the full marathon. So after you have contacted your potential customers, the next thing you need to do it is to measure its response rate. The response rate is the percentage of people who actually took action and followed your suggestion to buy, participate, visit, or whatever was your main goal for creating the direct marketing campaign. At the previous run race example if you have contacted 1,000 people to participate on the marathon race and 100 of them actually registered, you would get a 10% response rate. If your brand is not strong yet, direct marketing is a great way to get results/ sales. As you contact the potential customers directly you have the opportunity to explain them your unique selling proposition and why they should choose your products. This will not happen if you use other marketing channels, as you will not have the opportunity to go into detail about your product strengths, and because you may face similar products with a well know brand next to your ads.

One of the least sexy mega-trends of the 21st century is the growing advertiser insistence on bottom line results, accountability and better ROI, according to Ron Geskey's new book, "Media Planning & Buying in the 21st Century" Let's face it, from an ROI standpoint, some digital media have had too little scrutiny of their cost effectiveness compared to conventional media. Let's say that an advertiser's objectives are 1) to generate maximum leads/sales within the budget, and 2) to simultaneously enhance the brand's image. The advertiser sets aside a $100,000 budget to achieve these objectives. The advertiser decided to compare the projected cost effectiveness and the "branding" potential of three direct response alternatives: banner ads, paid search, and direct mail prior to committing the budget. The advertiser's basic question was, "how many conversions can I buy for $100,000 using 1) a combination of banners and display ads, 2) paid search, or 3) conventional direct mail (in this case a modest mailing piece in a letter sized envelope). In relation to the advertiser's second objective of branding, which approach will likely have the most positive effect on brand equity? Metrics/Assumptions The advertiser's projections of performance will depend on the metrics and assumptions utilized. This comparison primarily relies upon the Direct Marketing Association's estimates. Following are the advertiser's assumptions: 1. Banner/display ads are priced at an average CPM of about $6.00 for a targeted audience. According to a report from the Marketing Sherpa, click throughs average about.002 but are falling, and according to the DMA's latest report (2010), the conversion rate among clickers averages.044. 2. CPC averages $3.79 per click, according to the DMA report, and the conversion rate averages 3.8%. 3. Since the DMA cited results based on a modest mailing piece in a letter sized envelope, direct mail would likely cost about $.75 per piece ($750 CPM), including list, postage, and the mailing piece. The DMA reported an average response rate of 3.4%. So here is how the options compare, based a budget of $100,000: Results 1. Banners/Ads Banners - Based on a $6.00 CPM and a.2% CTR,the banner plan generated 16.7 million impressions and about 33,000 clicks which generated almost 1500 responses at a cost per response of $68. The branding effect was rated as "fair" because, assuming adequate creative, the banner ads had an opportunity to communicate a branded message. 2. Paid Search - Based on the $100,000 budget and an average cost per click of $3.89, the CPC campaign would generage over 26,000 clicks with 1000 conversions/responses at a cost per conversion of $100, roughly 50% higher than for banners/ads. The Branding effect was rated as "poor" because there is negligible communication opportunity in a text ad. At $3.79, click cost accounted for the cost performance of paid search. (In order for paid search to be as cost effective as direct mail the CPC wouldhave to be about $.75. 3. Direct Mail - In the conventional media world, direct mail is considered to be extremely costly. In this case, however, assuming a realistic CPM of $750 to send mail a letter sized envelope/package to a highly targeted audience, direct mail would reach a little more than 133,000 recipients. At a 3.4% response rate, the direct mail package would generate 4522 responses at a cost per response of $22, about a third of the banners/ads cost and a fifth of the paid search cost per response. In terms of branding effects, the direct mail piece would also provide the greatest opportunity among these options. (Note: does not include direct mail recipients who clicked to web site.) Summary Based on the average metrics used in this example, direct mail was three times more cost effective than banner ads and did almost five times better than CPC (which is hurt with a $3.79 cost per click). From a branding standpoint, the internet pales creatively in relation to what can be done in direct mail (which also generates website traffic). As some of the sparkle wears off digital media, cost effectiveness and ROI will become a bigger and bigger issue. This example once again demonstrates that media decisions should not be made without proper due diligence and a built in bias for digital media. Planners should forecast results based on the best metrics and assumptions available.

Direct marketing is a great methodology which gives me a chance to tie in many of the marketing themes about which I have been writing and creating videos. Direct marketing has been around over one hundred years. I view it as a methodology and a philosophy rather than a concrete strategy. Whatever your particular marketing technique may be, what defines direct marketing is when you go right to the consumer with your marketing. That is why it is called direct marketing - because you go directly to the consumer, and measure their response and engagement rate. The powerful thing about going directly to the consumer is that everything can be measured. Sometimes direct marketing is called direct response marketing because you are able to measure the response and engagement rate of the people to whom you are marketing. Once you are able to measure the results of your direct marketing efforts, you are able use direct marketing strategies to understand and improve the effectiveness of your overall marketing efforts by being able to calculate the cost to acquire each customer. That is really powerful because you can also calculate the lifetime value of a customer. And knowing those two numbers makes for an extremely powerful combination. When you are doing direct marketing, it is extremely important that you use web analytics to measure and understand the results of your direct marketing efforts. Additionally, you should be using AB testing to make sure that you are getting the most out of each direct marketing effort you have. To sum up, the core concept behind direct marketing is that you should always be able to measure everything you do. That will help your marketing be more scientific. Measuring results will help you take out the guessing out of your overall strategy and decrease overall risks in your marketing efforts. Even if you are not necessarily doing direct marketing, try to borrow the core concept of direct marketing, which is measuring and tracking everything, and use that concept in your marketing efforts. Well that’s what I’m going to reveal to you today. This is going to take some hard work on your side, it’s going to take an action plan, and it’s up to you to complete that plan, however the results will put tens of thousands of increased profits in your pockets. So what’s the strategy? A Co Op mailing. A co op mailing is where you partner with other non competing local businesses who are looking to increase their business. You, or a staff member, puts in all the hard work of finding these local businesses and pitching your co op strategy and how it will benefit them. Then the entire mailing is paid by those businesses and you don’t pay a penny. Now you might be thinking – it’s going to be tough to pitch this to business owners but it’s actually way easier then you think. Especially if they are currently spending money on direct mail or have in the past because you know they are paying top dollar. If you can go to them and say “I can help you cut down your mailing costs by 75% by partnering with me and other local non competing businesses in our area.” They are going to listen because all of us owners are looking to get as much targeted exposure as we can for very little money. Let me explain how this would work if you were to send out 10,000 mailers per month. Lets say you plan on partnering with 6 local businesses. You’d call a direct mail shop and tell them you need to be quoted on 10,000 mailers stuffed in a envelope based on the size of each advertisement for each company. You could do 1/2 page ads, you could do full page. It’s up to you. Then you get a final price on the print and fulfillment side. Then you take that full price and divide that by 6. To keep things simple, lets say it’s $1 per piece to keep the math simple. So that’s $10,000 total or divided by 6 that’s $1,666.00 or .16 cents per mailer. So now you can show them they are only paying .16 for printing and postage! Again this will take some upfront work but the pay off is huge for everyone involved, especially you because you have no money coming out of pocket.
