Classroom Activities with Student Choice

15:28
Increasing Student Independence through Student Choice is on of my favorite practices in Elementary School. Today, I discuss how I implement Student Choice into daily classroom activities through rotations, centers and small group. I believe, we as teachers, have a responsibility to prepare our students for success. One important lesson that students can learn is how to be independent. In my classroom, students are given choice boards to choose from for both Reading and Writing. My partner teacher gives students choices in Math, Science, and Social Studies for her goal work. This ability to choose their assignments individually, allows students to feel that sense of independence and increased belief and responsibility. It then becomes our role to support each student on their path and continue to push them to be their best and learn to manage their time. This method can be used in any classroom, including Daily 5, where you want to promote an increased interest in education. The Sustainable Development Goals – Action Towards 2030 | CAFOD and SDGs

05:53
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of Agenda 2030 – see: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/post2015/transformingourworld Sustainable Development Goals – your questions answered: http://cafod.org.uk/News/Campaigning-news/Sustainable-Development-Goals In Video 1, CAFOD explains what the SDGs are and why they are transformational in the way the world fights extreme poverty, inequality, injustice and climate change. In Video 2: CAFOD explains what civil society groups can get involved and help make sure we get there. “We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and environmental. Strategies for a solution demand an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature.” – Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ 139. In 2015, world leaders from 193 countries agreed the Sustainable Development Goals – or SDGs – the world’s new action plan for the next 15 years to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, fight inequality, tackle climate change and achieve sustainable development for all. The SDGs follow the Millennium Development Goals - or MDGs –agreed in 2000 in a global coordinated attempt to tackle development issues. There are four underlining principles that come with the SDGs and that are transformational in the way we work on development in the future: Firstly they are universal and apply to every country, rich and poor, north and south, developed and developing. Secondly, they integrate all dimensions of sustainability: economic development, social progress and environmental protection. Thirdly, the SDGs tell us we should leave no one behind. And finally, the SDGs require the participation of all. Taken together with the Paris Climate Change agreement and the Pope’s Encyclical Laudato Si, the SDGs provide a new framework for approaching sustainable development. Animation by Dee at https://sketchpadstudio.com/ --- CAFOD works in communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America, helping people to tackle the poverty and injustice they face. We work wherever the need is greatest, with people of all faiths and none. Learn about CAFOD: http://www.cafod.org.uk/

Problem Solving Groupwork Activities in the Classroom

03:00
Teaching problem-solving group activities can enhance both effectiveness and learning for all students. Group work in the classroom is a valuable enterprise for all students since it helps students learn both collaborative problem-solving and increased toleration of others. Even better, the combination of props, a successful environment, and time to debrief in a group allows students from all levels of learning to develop the ability to create a successful project or presentation. In this video, an example of a History Alive! problem-solving group work activity demonstrates how students learning about aspects of life in medieval European towns work in groups. The students then present about one aspect of life in medieval European towns. Just like the handouts provided in the History Alive! lesson, the Bring Science Alive! interactive science lesson plans provide the opportunity for teaching 5th-grade science using hands-on activities and student interaction that increase knowledge about problem-solving for students. ***LEARN MORE:*** Learn more: https://www.teachtci.com/ Purchase online: http://shop.teachtci.com/school-textbooks/28-history-alive-textbook-the-medieval-world-and-beyond-middle-school/ Connect with Us! https://www.facebook.com/TeachTCI/ https://www.pinterest.com/teachtci/ https://twitter.com/TeachTCI https://www.youtube.com/user/TeachTCI Learn More: https://www.teachtci.com Email: info@teachtci.com Call: 1-800.497.6138

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Explained

04:14
Short presentation explaining the Sustainable Development Goals and why 2015 is an important year. Join our book launch on 'Thinking Beyond Sectors' for the goals in July http://beyondsectors.tumblr.com/ With Clem Silverman About LIDC: Learn more about LIDC and join on our website at http://www.lidc.org.uk/about/join LIDC’s mission is to address global development challenges by facilitating cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration amongst its member Colleges and with partners worldwide. Our vision is a world made more equitable and secure through a reduction in poverty and more sustainable use of resources and evidence-based decision-making. LIDC develops interdisciplinary research, activities and training programmes to address complex international development challenges. Addressing these challenges effectively often requires working across sectors, such as education and health, or between disciplines, such as sociology and economics. With partner institutions in low and middle income countries, LIDC builds initiatives on such subjects as climate change, HIV/ AIDS, migration, and emerging diseases. LIDC's member colleges are Birkbeck, UCL Institute of Education, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Royal Veterinary College, SOAS, Queen Mary, University of London and City, University of London. Collectively, these specialist Colleges have a wealth of development-related research and knowledge across a variety of disciplines. The LIDC member colleges all have strong individual reputations in international development. LIDC brings their strengths together, building new research and training collaborations between Colleges and with partner institutions in support of international development. What makes LIDC distinctive among international development centres is the breadth and depth of its scholarship relevant to international development, and its capacity to integrate research and education across a range of sectors and across the natural, biomedical and social sciences, to address development challenges.
Targeting Social Skills Across the School Day: Lunch Bunch & Beyond

58:11
Presented on 12/5/2012 by Julie Stewart, M.Ed. at the KY Autism Training Center Students with autism spectrum disorders are impacted by a qualitative impairment in social interaction. Although this area of challenge will impact individuals across the lifespan, it is an area that does not receive as much explicit intervention as other areas. Finding times during the day to work on social skills is difficult, especially with all of the demands for academic production. Teachers must use times of the day that are naturally social, such as lunch, center work, & group work. This webinar will provide information about how to creatively and systematically plan for teaching social skills, targeting student social goals/objectives, across the school day. This webinar will also be beneficial for families to become even more active partners in planning for their student's educational experience.

While I have made a series of videos for Florida’s Civics EOC Exam, much of the material on the two state exams are similar. I will am now going through all of the Virginia tested standards, communicating with Virginia Civics Teachers and reviewing test questions. I would welcome feedback from any teacher on how to improve these videos or lessons: jeffraymond2002@yahoo.com. Like most of the videos on Mr. Raymond’s Civics Academy this video ends with a review “quiz.” Remember that the PowerPoint in this video as well as a variety of lesson plans, worksheets, smartboard files and activities are available at Teachers Pay Teachers. As a civics teacher I have often looked for civics YouTube video clips to show my students. I also wanted to create videos to Flip my class. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers, US history teachers, US government teachers and their students. While they might be a little basic for AP Government students, they could serve as a refresher of basic concepts and content. I have also thought that these videos could help those who are going to take the naturalization test to become US Citizens. I have also been reached by parents whose children are taking Florida Virtual School’s (FLVS) Civics class. Students are introduced to the goals of foreign policy: national security, maintain peace, spreading democracy, increasing trade, and providing aid. An overview of the role that the secretary of state, the State Department, and embassies and provided and their role in foreign policy and diplomacy. Definitions for key term such as: diplomacy, treaties, alliances, and sanctions are provided. Like most of the videos on Mr. Raymond’s Civics EOC Academy this video ends with a review “quiz.” Remember that the PowerPoint in this video as well as a variety of lesson plans and activities are available at Teachers Pay Teachers. Mr. Raymond’s Civics E.O.C. Academy was designed for students taking the Florida Civics End-of-Course (EOC) Exam. However, as many states are implementing Civics Exams, these videos will work for all students of Civics, US Government, and US History. Currently students have to pass a civics state exam in order to graduate in Idaho, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, North Dakota, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah – as well as state social studies tests such as Texas’ STAAR exam. These videos look at all of the civics benchmarks that will be tested on most state civics exams. As a civics teacher I have often looked for civics YouTube video clips to show my students. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers, US history teachers, US government teachers and their students. While they might be a little basic for AP Government students, they could serve as a refresher of basic concepts and content. Lesson Plan – Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns

05:08
IGCGE or IB economics Lesson Plan – Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns Featuring students from: Year 10 Po Sein Horizon International School, Yangon, Myanmar My classroom gets turned into a factory that manufactures paper chains. A paper chain is made by taking two long, narrow strips of paper, folding one into a ring and stapling the ends together, then folding the other into a ring and connecting it to the first ring to make a chain. Two loops of paper stapled together make a chain. The longer your chain, the more productive our factory and its workers are. The goal of your paper chain factory, of course, is to make the longest chain possible in a fixed amount of time using a fixed amount of land and capital, with labor as your only variable resource. This is therefore an experiment to test the short-run law of diminishing marginal returns. Follow us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/Itinerant-Economist-1674951659499145/ music by longzijun

This beautiful animation shows what the world could look like if we achieve some the Global Goals by 2030. It looks at a selection of global issues, from extreme poverty to gender equality, and tracks the progress that has been made from the start of the millennium. It then demonstrates how much further we still have to go by 2030 if the Goals are to be achieved. It is a stunning piece of data visualisation, soundtracked by legendary UK MC Wiley.
