Afrikaans/Eng/Nat South African President Nelson Mandela has visited a woman in whose house he helped plot the overthrow of the apartheid regime forty years ago. 96 year old Augusta Lollan lives in Soweto and Mandela, along with other activists, planned ANC policies and actions there before he was arrested for treason. She said she wanted to see Mandela again before she died and on Tuesday, he fulfilled that dream. It was a reunion that has been a long time coming. Forty years, in fact. At long last, South African President Nelson Mandela - met by cheering crowds - is having a reunion with a fellow freedom fighter. This one, however, is 96 years old and contributed to the anti-apartheid battle by make meals and tea for a much younger Mandela when he was on the run. Augusta Lollan, wearing a scarf over her head and her eyesight dimmed with age, downplayed her role in the meetings where she had served tea, but was obviously proud the activists had used her home. Lollan wanted to meet Mandela again and was afraid she wouldn't before she died. She not only got the visit - but a marriage proposal to boot. SOUNDBITE: (Afrikaans) " Despite your age, you look healthy and attractive, you should marry me." SUPER CAPTION: Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa SOUNDBITE: (Afrikaans) " What, marry a child?" SUPER CAPTION: Augusta Lollan, Former anti-apartheid comrade Lollan's son, Stanley was also active in the anti-apartheid movement. Together with other ANC militants, they planned ANC policies and actions in her home in Soweto, the sprawling black township near Johannesburg. Police often invaded her house, searching for evidence. Most of them were put on trial in the 1956 Treason Trial and Mandela was convicted and spent 27 years in prison. Freed in 1990, he became president in the nation's first all-race elections four years later. The reunion underscored the fact that many of the African National Congress activists who fought apartheid through civil disobedience and guerrilla tactics are retiring or dying. They are now passing the mantle to a younger generation. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I was very sorry to hear that they were no longer with us, but it's the Lord that giveth and the Lord that taketh away, and we must accept his decision." SUPER CAPTION: Nelson Mandela/President of South Africa Mandela draped his arms over Lollan's stooped shoulders while they spoke of the dark apartheid years. After their brief visit he escorted her out of her modest home where reporters and onlookers were waiting. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It's an honour for me to stand beside comrade Lollan, because she was my comrade in those worst days before prison and I'm happy to be here today with her. I'm with my comrade, with who I've fought a beautiful fight and won." SUPER CAPTION: Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa Now that she has had her meeting with Mandela, Lollan declared she was now ready to die. • Lyrics: I had your back, but it's no use False accusations are on the loose You know what? It makes no sense that you tied your own noose You never felt the sores decay Your perfect world is ending today So what? I wouldn't have it any other way [Lead: Holt] Is this your paradise? Solastor solar thermal power station for Port Augusta
On 7th June 2016 another important step was taken towards decarbonising the South Australian economy. Solastor Australia announced detailed plans to build a solar thermal power station at Port Augusta. In 2012 Dan Spencer reported for the New Internationalist (http://www.newint.com.au/blog/building-australias-first-solar-thermal-power-plant/): "In July this year – faced with the closure of the coal plants – a community vote was held by a local group called Repower Port Augusta asking residents whether they wanted solar thermal or gas to replace the town’s coal stations. Overwhelmingly the community voted 4053 to 43 for clean air, more jobs and the chance to see Port Augusta lead the country by building Australia’s first solar thermal power plants.” Years passed and despite the enormous enthusiasm of the people of Port Augusta, and tireless activism, little physical progress was made. After a long study, Alinta Energy announced in September 2015 that it wasn’t feasible for it to build a solar thermal plant to replace its coal-fired power stations. Closure had been expected some time between March 2016 and March 2018, but the end came quickly with the power stations shut down on May 9th 2016. South Australia lost a significant part of its baseload power-generating capacity without any commencement of building a replacement. But despite that, the transition to a green economy is well underway in South Australia. 41% of the State’s electricity grid generation was powered by renewable energy in 2014/15. And the South Australian Low Carbon Economy Experts Panel reported to the South Australian Government in November 2015 that it is feasible for the State to reach net zero emissions by 2050. So this week’s announcement from Solastor Australia is tremendously important, particularly because the company is promising prompt action. They plan to build a grid-connected pilot plant at Port Augusta by the end of 2016, using scalable technology. The 1MW demonstration solar thermal power station will have several collector towers, each holding a 10 tonne block of graphite that can store the heat from the toroidal reflector mirrors for up to a week. Water circulating through tubing embedded in the graphite is converted to steam which then drives a turbine generator. The full-scale grid-connected power station will have 1,700 collector tower modules and is expected to generate 110MW in winter and 170MW in summer. Solastor envisages that this will be the first of many similar baseload solar thermal plants.
Kirby's Augusta - Augusta's Birthday in 1935
I didn't know whether you knew it, but June 14th is Augusta's birthday. Yes, a letter written on that date in 1736 by Georgia founder James Oglethorpe ordered authorities to lay out a town up here on the biggest, flattest, driest patch of land along the Savannah River between the rapids and the ocean. Over the years a variety of historic associations tried to get our town into the habit of celebrating each June 14, tying it in with Flag Day and the birthday of the U.S. Army, but it never seemed to catch on. Maybe it just wasn’t all that dramatic. We know that in 1739, Gen. Oglethorpe, himself, dropped to see what the town he'd created looked like. He rode in via the old Creek Indian trail - what we now call Wrightsboro Road. His party was greeted with a musket salute, and he was generally pleased. One of Oglethorpe's party described Augusta as a town "inhabited chiefly by Indian storekeepers and traders ... well situated in a pleasant, healthy part of the country." Oglethorpe probably could have left more of an impact on his new metropolis, but he stayed only 10 days before hurrying home when he heard Britain was at war with Spain. He left the town with a growth plan, but Augusta civic leaders being ... well, Augusta civic leaders, didn't follow it. For one thing, he wanted the city to grow by adding squares, like Savannah. Augustans appear to have thought such open parks a waste of prime real estate and filled them in with buildings. Also, instead of growing to the south toward what was then a swamp, Augusta construction went west down Broad Street for a financial reason - the merchants kept "leapfrogging" each other toward the Creek and Cherokee Indian trails west of town, wanting to be the first store that traders came upon when they arrived from the west with fresh furs. Though we didn't follow Oglethorpe's vision, we certainly tried to make it up to him. In May 1935, Augusta held an elaborate, weeklong bicentennial. It was by all accounts an elaborate affair, with pageants, parades, dances and contests. There was even an official poem. Central to the event was a recreation of Oglethorpe's arrival two centuries before. In this dramatic version, he was greeted by Indians as his boat came up the Savannah River. He then haggled with them over possession of the land before claiming this spot. Think of it as Columbia Discovers America meets the Purchase of Manhattan Island. Everyone who remembers the event, enjoyed it, but as Augusta's celebrated historian, the late Ed Cashin, liked to point out, we celebrated the 200th anniversary the wrong year. The correct bicentennial should have waited until 1936. BUT I THINK THERE IS A REASON. If you check out major league baseball this season, you’ll find the Atlanta Braves are celebrating their 50th year in Atlanta. They arrived here Georgia in 1966, so most would think they’d wait until next year … but marketing people are always looking for an angle. That’s what I think Augusta did in 1935 … they celebrated the city’s 200th year. By technically going a year early, it allowed them to also combine the event with the 150th birthday of The Augusta Chronicle as well as the 100th birthday of the Georgia Railroad bank, a major advertiser in the newspaper’s special bicentennial edition. That’s why Dr. Cashin could resolve the dates. Historians are bad at marketing. And vice versa.

Kirby's Augusta: The Forgotten Patriot
I always try to take a moment on the Fourth of July to remember Georgia's John Houstoun. On a day when Patriots are widely celebrated, he is largely ignored. That's too bad, because if everything had gone the way it should have, John Houstoun would have made the most famous roll call in American history – the Declaration of Independence. 1.Houstoun actually achieved much in Georgia history although we don’t remember it. 2.He was twice governor of Georgia, He was the first mayor of the city of Savannah. He commanded the Georgia militia in the invasion of Florida during the American Revolution and represented Georgia in the Continental Congress. That’s why he in Philadelphia in the early days of the Continental Congress in 1776, and just as committed to the American cause as Georgia's other signers - George Walton, Lyman Hall and Button Gwinnett. (Library of Congress images abound) But there was also a fifth Georgian in that group - a Savannah preacher named the Rev. John J. Zubly. You can blame Zubly for Houstoun's lack of fame. ACCORDING TO notes from the proceedings of the Continental Congress: “During the deliberation of congress a few members had privately discussed the propriety of a Declaration … Zubly … secretly dispatched a letter to the British governor containing a full disclosure of this important state secret, and advising him to adopt preventive measures in Georgia. Fortunately, however, a copy of this communication was obtained by one of the clerks, and Mr. Chase … openly accused Dr. Zubly of treachery. He stoutly denied the charge and challenged his accuser to produce the proofs. But that was apparently a stalling tactic. Zubly seems to have slipped out of Independence Hall and “finding, however that his perfidy would be clearly established, he immediately fled.” Zubly decided he would cast his lot with the British, quietly slipping out of Philadelphia and heading home to Savannah to share what he knew of the American plans for independence. The four Georgia patriots decided they had to catch the turncoat preacher. Houstoun was, ACCORDING TO THE Congressonal record, “directed to pursue him and to adopt every expedient measure to counteract any evils that might result the disclosure.” Why Houston? Althought not the youngest or quickest, he was a military man used to aggressive activities and … Maybe he had the fast horse. Anyway, the chase was on. This could make a great movie. Two guys racing almost 1,000 miles down the East Coast of Colonial America on what passed for roads. (We could show map that looks like Colonial America … with either a red arrow …. Followed by a blue arrows heading down the East Coast from Philadelphia to Savannah. Or some sort of stock footage from some old Western of two guys riding after each other.) It would have made a greater movie if Houstoun had caught Zubly, too, but he didn't. That was the bad news. The good news was that by the time Zubly got to Savannah, the royal governor JAMES WRIGHT had skipped town. Zubly was labeled a Loyalist. He lost his property and died within a few years. Houstoun decided not to return to Philadelphia to sign the Declaration. He continued to press the Continenal cause back home and was successful, holding offices as judge, mayor and twice was Georgia governor. And although his name never made it on the Declaration, it did make it on one of Augusta’s first named streets. And Georgia named a county south of Macon after Mr. Houston, too. e both spelled it wrong (“Houston”) but at least we were thinking of him. This July Fourth, let’s remember him again.

Augusta Greenjackets Stadium example
This is a tracked shot taken from a biplane of downtown Augusta, GA, in an effort to show that the proposed stadium will indeed fit within the space of the old Augusta Golf and Gardens. Much controversy has surrounded Mayor Copenhaver's plan to move the Augusta Greenjackets stadium to Reynolds Street. "Will the stadium fit" is a common question amongst the detractors of the plan. We built the stadium to scale within Lightwave, our 3D application, and tracked the camera using reference points to deduct size and spacial orientation and then inserted the stadium to see if it really would fit. Effects included camera tracking, 3D object insertion, rotoscoping and shooting from an open cockpit biplane - it was windy, to say the least.

Sand River By James Osbon
James B. Osbon This biography has been written primarily to be read by the people of Aiken, South Carolina, who plan to read or have read the book, "Sand River." Because of that, it contains more local Aiken detail than a usual author biography would. I was born in Aiken in the spring of 1938 at a time that the Great Depression was lessening and before serious war started in Europe or Asia. The Aiken County Hospital, on Richland Avenue, was the place, and I was brought home in a few days to a small bungalow on Columbia Drive, now known as Columbia Avenue. In 2000, our family donated this property to the city, and it is now known as Osbon Park. My father, Geddings Osbon, was already 37 years old, and my mother, Bessie Wilcher Osbon, was 29 when I arrived. They had been married since 1930, and were living in the house he built for her when they married. His own parents lived ¼ mile away on Hampton Avenue, near Bethany Cemetery. I had three brothers (Bobby, Julian, Tony) and a sister (Carolyn) while I was growing up, with me being wedged tightly between Bobby and Julian. Geddings had been in business with his father, Nathaniel, and his brother, Arthur, on Laurens Street in downtown Aiken. Their business was Osbon Tire Company, located in the same spot where Wells Fargo Bank is located in 2013. Shortly after I was born, my father decided to split away from his relatives, and opened a similar business on Broad Street in Augusta which he called Osbon Auto Supply Company. The year was approximately 1940. For the rest of his life (45 more years) he continued to live in that same house in Aiken and drove to Augusta to his businesses six days a week. I attended the Aiken County public schools, which meant Aiken Grammar School for grades 1-6 and Aiken High School for grades 7-12. I was 12 years old when the "bomb plant" entered our lives, and therefore have an excellent memory of how it affected just about everything in our town for the rest of my childhood. My athletic life took over a larger portion of my life than I ever anticipated when it began at age 10. By the time I graduated from Aiken High, I was playing football, basketball, baseball, track (for one year), and driving a school bus during my senior year. I was fortunate to secure a full scholarship to play Division I basketball at the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, and graduated from there in 1960 with a B.A. in Economics. As a college basketball player, I discovered that I was incredibly mediocre. Since I had joined ROTC when I enrolled at William and Mary, I owed the U.S. Army up to two years of my time after graduation. I was commissioned as an officer in the Infantry and spent most of my two years in Germany during 1961-1963. Interesting duties included assisting with the filming of "The Longest Day," a movie about the Allied D-Day landing in France in 1944, and later I became the Officer-in-Charge of Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin in the winter of 1963. For the curious researcher, references to these experiences are available on the Internet. After the Army, I married Beatrice McKay, a fellow W&M student from Norfolk, and began a computer career with IBM in Richmond, Virginia. We liked Virginia and stayed with IBM there for seven years, followed by seven years as co-founder of The Computer Company, also of Richmond, and another seven years as the chief officer of Information Technology for Blue Cross of Virginia. In 1975-76, I wrote a book in my spare time, a reference text called the "Silver Dollar Encyclopedia." By 1979, I had revised it completely and re-issued it as the Second Edition of the original book. Those two projects were extremely important in my writing development, and both were self-published successfully before self-publishing ever existed as an industry. While I was working on the second coin book in 1979, I made a promise to myself that I would write a book of fiction before I was all finished with writing. It took me until 2008 to keep that promise. In that year, wrote a story called "Masterplan." It is a fictional story about the premise of there being a general plan for this life, and it specifically involved a four year old little girl and her grandfather being able to communicate by transmitting thoughts to each other. In their story, their abilities to perform this kind of mental magic leaked out, and the Army and Federal government enticed them to help with the War on Terrorism. The cozy nature of Aiken in the 1940s and 1950s turned out to be the perfect place for the Osbon family of four boys and a girl to develop into responsible citizens of the larger world. As young teenagers, the four boys played sports and raced in the Soap Box Derby in Augusta, where two of us won (Julian in 1952, me in 1953) and when the race went dormant for several years, Tony traveled to Asheville, NC, to win. In the years 1953-1957, the cit

Kirby's Augusta - Montgomery Meigs
What if I told you that the man who developed the Arlington National Cemetery -- resting places for so many we remember each Memorial Day was an Augusta native? What if I told you that the man who engineered our nation's Capitol building in Washington, D.C., and supervised one of the most successful military operations in American history was born right here not too from the Savannah River? And what if I told you that this man, a grandson of a University of Georgia president and nephew of a Georgia governor, spent most of his life spiting the South? Would you know who I was talking about? Would you know Montgomery Meigs?

ROK ARMY Light Armed Helicopters(LAH)
KAI selected as a LCH/LAH developer to tow the development of the aviation industry and strengthening of self-reliant defense simultaneously - Targets exports of 600 units, putting total sales to 1,000. - Lays the groundwork for the new growth engine along with the KF-X project in the future aviation industry. Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd.(KAI), an only and sole Korean aircraft carrier takes charge of developing the Light Armed Helicopters(LAH) and Light Civil Helicopters(LCH) which are able to tow development of Korea's domestic aviation industry and reinforcing the Korean military's aviation strength simultaneously. Both the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration announced on the 21st that "KAI was selected as a preferred bidder for the core technology development of the LCH project and the system development of the LAH project." With this selection, KAI will establish a LCH/LAH development plan, including selection of overseas system developers as well as local and foreign vendors and will be solely responsible for the system development of those two projects. The conclusion ceremony of the LCH/LAH development contracts is expected to be held in November. The LCH/LAH project, driven jointly by both MOTIE and DAPA is a project which connects and develops the 10,000lb-class light armed helicopter and the light civil helicopter all together and its total development budget in local investment is forecasted to be more than approximately one(1) trillion won. Assisted by the government, KAI plans to draw foreign direct investment as well. The LCH, driven by MOTIE for development will replace the foreign-made helicopters operated in Korea and will be used for diverse purposes, including emergency services, coastal surveillance and passenger transportation. KAI plans to set out for development of the LCH earlier than the LAH and complete the development by 2020, given its development efficiency and budget saving. Currently, KAI is in negotiations with Agusta Westland, Italy, Airbus, the Europe, Bell, the U.S.A., and Sikorsky, the U.S.A., all of which offered their participation intentions in the development of the LCH. In the meantime, designed for substituting for Korea's old and superannuated 500 MDs and AH-1Ss, attack helicopters, the LAH project is being driven by the DAPA. The Korean military fixed a plan for deploying and operating the high-class attack helicopter and the low-class armed helicopter as its army aviation aircraft in order to reinforce Korea's aviation strength in 2009 and has since driven development of a Korean-made Light Armed Helicopter, or LAH. Intending to make use of the civil and military parts which were acquired via the development of the LCH, KAI plans to secure its armed and fire control system ability of the LAH through international technology cooperation, scheduled for completion by 2022. Via the development of the KT-1 basic trainer and the T-50 advanced trainer as well as the KUH or Korea Utility Helicopter, KAI has continued to secure its aircraft development ability and infrastructure," said an official at KAI." "The company got everything in readiness to make a successful development of the KF-X and the LAH/LCH project, core ones which will tow rapid progress in the local aviation industry and strengthening of self-reliance defense."
