Political Ideology: Crash Course Government and Politics #35

08:47
So today Craig is going to look at political ideology in America. We're going to focus on liberals and conservatives and talk about the influencers of both of these viewpoints. Now, it's important to remember that political ideologies don't always perfectly correspond with political parties, and this correspondence becomes less and less likely over time. So, sure we can say that Democrats tend to be liberal and Republicans tend to be conservative, but we're not going to be talking about political parties in this episode. It's also important to note, that there are going to be a lot of generalizations here, as most peoples' ideologies fall on a spectrum, but we're going to try our best *crosses fingers* to summarize the most commonly held viewpoints for each of these positions as they are used pretty frequently in discussions of American politics. Realism (international relations)

16:23
Realism is a school of thought in international relations theory based on four central propositions, namely Political Groupism, Egoism, International anarchy and Power politics. Realpolitikal diplomacy first came to be known through the works of Thomas Hobbes and Niccolò Machiavelli, but it was not until Hans Morgenthau that scholars began to study such theory methodically, with Realism emerging as an international relations-based approach in the inter-war years of the 20th century. As the theories began to anchor themselves in international relations studies throughout the 20th century, branches began to emerge such as classical realism, neorealism, defensive realism, offensive realism, and neoclassical realism. Jonathan Haslam from the University of Cambridge characterizes Realism as "a spectrum of ideas." Regardless of which definition is used, the theories of realism revolve around four central propositions: This video is targeted to blind users. The Political Spectrum Explained In 4 Minutes

04:36
In the modern political world, the terms ‘left-wing’ and ‘right-wing’ can often be heard and misunderstood. But what do these terms mean and where do they come from? The terms Left and Right were first used in an ideological context during the French Revolution of the 18th century. Those on the left were in support of the revolution and those on the right supported the monarchy. This idea of the left supporting change and the right wanting to keep the status quo continues today and is key in some of their philosophy. Thanks for watching! SCOPE OF MARKETING

00:01
The scope or gamut of marketing covers the entire spectrum of marketing activities. It stands for what marketing is ?, how it works? What is marketed? Who does this marketing? and how business and marketing are changing? What is Marketing? We are already knowing as to what is marketing. 'Essentially, marketing is to do with identifying and meeting human and social needs. Put in a very short and sweet terms, marketing is "meeting the needs profitably." The heart of marketing is exchange and transactions put together. A person can get product in at least four alternative ways. One way is to produce the product or service. When a person hunts, fishes or gathers fruits and roots. Another way is to get the product or service by force. It is called as holding or burglary. And third way is to beg from those who can spare goods and services. Beggars can not be choosers as they are at mercy of people helping them. Another way is to buy from others for money or moneys value.

How to Make High Performance Sound Absorption Panels for $5

08:38
In this video I explore the possibility of making DIY sound absorption panels on a budget, later comparing them to much more expensive acoustic foam. The results are pretty amazing! There have been many comments pointing out that my test only measures transmission and not reflection, so is essentially unsuitable for my initial testing goal. While this is partly true, testing reflection is pretty difficult to do in a home environment, and the only way to do it that I can think of would be to spend a long time in the middle of a field with a powerful speaker and mic rig, which is really beyond the scope of what I was prepared to do for the video. My tests are not rendered pointless however - it would do no good to have only measured reflection, as the thinnest lightest material would have won (like foam), as nothing would have bounced back. Reflection and transmission need to be tested together to measure how much sound passes through, and how much sound is reflected back - this should give an indication of how much sound is absorbed by a given material. Regardless, only testing the transmission doesn't affect the outcome of the project at all, as any sound waves reflected by the panels themselves would have theoretically bounced off the wall anyway - again this is why reflection wasn't tested, as it doesn't matter so much for a panel setup (though would matter very much for a vocal booth). Open to hear any thoughts about it though! Keep up the great discussion. :)

Down to Earth - retrieving our true human potential | Rolf WInters | TEDxZurich

24:13
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. "Rolf’s leitmotif in life has been the search for ways to unlock our hidden human potential. Initially his focus was on an individual level. In his thirties he experimented with it in the corporate world on a group and organizational level. After turning forty and having become a father of three, his scope shifted and he became intrigued by the hidden human potential in our society, of humanity as a whole. In their search for essence and to find a new perspective on life Rolf his wife Renata decided to break away from society, together with their children. For five years they lived with different tribal communities around the world. In his talk he will share his insights and will try to answer the following questions: What happens if you break away from a successful career and comfortable cosmopolitan lifestyle and leave behind everything you ever worked for in exchange for a simple and uncomplicated life in connection with nature? Live life day by day with no plan other than to learn? What happens to your beliefs and understanding of the world, to your perspective on life, when you expose yourself and your family to the (ab)original communities of the world; those who live a life in balance with the natural world, unaffected by man-made law or man-made religion? And what is it like to come back into the ‘real world’ after these five years? What is your truth, what are the lessons learnt? And how on earth can you live that truth and apply these lessons in our modern ‘civilized’ world?" Rolf was born and raised in the Netherlands, where he studied business economics. He enjoyed an international corporate career up till the age of 30. Having experienced the extremes of the corporate spectrum, from a thriving culture to self-destructive one, were elementary in finding his true passion in life: Uncovering our true human potential. He founded a leadership consulting & coaching firm aimed at generating healthy and vibrant entities with a spirit. The Psychology of Everything: What Compassion, Racism, and Sex tell us about Human Nature  Paul Bloom, Brooks and Suzanne Ragen Professor of Psychology, Yale University Give Paul Bloom one hour, and he'll teach you "the psychology of everything," illustrating some of the most fundamental elements of human nature through case studies about compassion, racism, and sex. He discusses some of the biggest questions in the nature versus nurture debate, including "Are we hard-wired to care about others?" Bloom points out why stereotyping can be both detrimental and beneficial, and he even explains what the porn preference of monkeys tells us about our own sexual choosiness, or lack thereof. After the hour is up you'll understand why Bloom calls psychology, because of its cross-disciplinary nature, "the perfect liberal arts major." Urban Sciences

03:44
Urban Sciences does not limit itself to spatial planning or understanding of spaces. It provides specialized knowledge on each of these urban layers and disciplines because in order to plan cities one needs a comprehensive knowledge on all aspects of urban life. Hence, Urban Sciences at IUSD, is a tough course. We teach everything that comes within the scope of the word ‘urban’. And we teach in a scientific framework. We believe that even the intangible can be measured if the approach is comprehensive and scientifically investigative. Urban Sciences has been comprehensively structured around Six Thematic Urban Fields, around which the course curriculum and subjects are designed. These will be taught over a span of two years –  Urban Spaces & Technology –Natural & Built Environment • Urban Form & Structures • Urban concepts and designs at various scales of planning • Spatial & Morphological analysis • Shells – natural & manmade • Network planning and services • Automation & Smart Technology • Physical Infrastructure Planning • Housing and habitat studies • Planning Techniques, tools and Software  Urban Ecology – • Elementary & Advanced Ecology • Geomorphology • Climatology • Environmental concepts & planning • Natural Resource Management • Disaster vulnerability & mitigation • Sustainability, Green, LEED  Urban Economics – • Land economics and valuation • Infrastructure and finance • Property & Real Estate • Municipal Accounting  Urban Sociology – • Socio - cultural studies • Social infrastructure planning • Cultural History • Evolution of Human Settlements • Heritage & Conservation  Urban People – • Demography • Statistics • Projections & Modeling  Urban Governance, Legislation and Management – • Urban Land Management • Constitutional framework, governance and political studies • Urban politics and schemes • Legislations, conventional acts, laws, norms, regulations. • Special laws and acts Yet in Conventional Planning Courses it is believed that it is impossible to teach or learn all of these disciplines in detail. This is where IUSD thinks differently. Our approach to teaching and learning urban sciences is unique and evolved from a complex structure, wherein urban is approached not from a conventional framework but in layers of how it exists. The new stream of urban sciences formulates a comprehensive methodology and framework to prepare the student to address the upcoming problems of our future cities. This is not limited to spatial planning. We prepare our students to address urban problems as experts and consultants in a varied spectrum. The basic philosophy of this course runs around the inevitable contradictions the future world cities are bound to face. In that scenario it is naïve to assume that imposed planning ideas would change such paradoxical realities. The new planning would have to work around the dichotomy which development and ecological conservation face from each other. The new meaning of sustainable development would have to work around a system which makes both mutually inclusive. This is easier said than done in the current understanding of urban planning and its conventional thought system. But the new stream of Urban Sciences proves this impossibility to be wrong. It works around the synthesis of all contradictions of urban life and forms a framework which arrives at natural solutions to complex urban issues. In that sense many disciplines come together for this synthesis via a complex matrix approach, which is not possible in conventional urban planning methods. Many problems arise out of a conventional urban planning methodology which is alien to the concept of an indigenous “sense of a place”. These plans are generally prepared in isolation and without responding to spatial, economic, socio cultural, environmental and other ground realities. Urban Sciences does not limit itself to spatial planning alone and finds solutions via critical appraisal and suitable strategies. Hence the scope of this course does not limit itself to architects, engineers, planners but also extends to historians, geographers, demographers, sociologists, ecologists, economists, and other related fields. Urban Sciences aims to prepare individuals to handle the new upcoming challenges of urban planning wherein conventional urban planners and policy makers feel incapacitated in participation. This course aspires to prepare a new guild of professionals who would be well equipped to handle urban issues not as activists or planners but as technical experts on concerned urban issues and disciplines. The future cities would need more of these experts who can professionally assist the governance on comprehensive urban planning in a holistic sense.

Changing the way we see Native Americans | Matika Wilbur | TEDxTeachersCollege

19:45
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In 2013 Matika Wilbur took on a project of massive scope: to photograph members of each Federally recognized tribe in the United States. "My dream," Wilbur says, "is that our children are given images that are more useful, truthful, and beautiful." Matika Wilbur—photographer, activist, writer, and educator—has undertaken Project 562, an endeavor of unprecedented impact and scope. Project 562 seeks to photograph every Federally recognized tribe in the United States and reveal in a brilliant spectrum of art, media, and curricula, the rich and complex twenty-first century image and reality of contemporary Native Americans. A simple, heartfelt idea informs Wilbur's work: "By exposing the astonishing variety of the Indian presence and reality at this juncture, we will build cultural bridges, abandon stereotypes, and renew and inspire our national legacy." Wilbur embarked on Project 562 in 2013 with a meager first year budget funded by Kickstarter, driving over 60,000 miles to network throughout Native America and discover remarkable images and stories never shared before. In February 2014 Wilbur launched a second Kickstarter campaign to fund another Project 562 expedition, and after twenty days and a blitz of media coverage (including CNN and the New York Times) Project 562 surpassed its fundraising goal nearly four times over. As Wilbur sees it, "The success and visibility of Project 562 show that people want and welcome change in how Native Americans are perceived." Wilbur is a graduate of the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, MT and the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. Her work has been shown at the Seattle Art Museum, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, the Tacoma Art Museum, the Royal British Columbia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Nantes Museum of Fine Arts. 01:00:51
Wellesley welcomed former Vice President Al Gore to campus on April 25, 2018, to deliver this year’s Wilson Lecture. The annual Wilson Lecture, which brings internationally influential speakers to Wellesley, is the highlight of Wellesley’s academic calendar and its premier academic lecture. The 45th vice president of the United States, Al Gore was inaugurated on January 20, 1993, and served eight years in the position. Previously, he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives beginning in 1976 and of the U.S. Senate from 1984 until he became vice president. Gore is cofounder and chairman of Generation Investment Management, a senior partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and a member of Apple Inc.’s board of directors. He currently spends the majority of his time working with the Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit devoted to solving the climate crisis, of which he is the chairman. The global leader in the fight to halt climate change, Gore will engage in a wide-ranging, candid conversation with Wellesley College Trustee Sue Wagner ’82 before answering questions from the community. Gore and Wagner, who are friends and colleagues, will discuss, with candor and conviction, what is at stake for us all.

They discuss their everyday experiences and difficulties they face, and their hopes for the future. The film was produced by Alyssa Huber, a film student who also has Asperger’s. The production of this film took about two years, though it began as a idea for a school project. The goal of the project was simple: to tell a story. So I interviewed my friend Katie, and learned so much about her journey with Asperger's. I told her story in a short trailer-style film. Watch the result here!--Trailer #1 ➤ http://tinyurl.com/asperger-doc-film-1 It expanded beyond what I planned initially, since I decided to produce it as a full-length film. I told not only Katie's story, but my own (Alyssa's), and the stories of many others on the autism spectrum. I interviewed about seven other young adults on the spectrum who were friends and acquaintances of mine, and I also interviewed three experts in the area of psychology. I made a second trailer to spread the word--Trailer #2 ➤ http://tinyurl.com/asperger-doc-film-2 I loved this project so much, but the tough part was that I was still in college. I cannot work or do any extracurricular activities while I'm in school due to my Asperger's, and yet I chose to produce an entire film on my own on top of my normal workload. That'd be tough for a normal person! I worked very hard through the murky waters of anxiety, depression, and perfectionism (that comes with my AS) to complete it, but I'm glad I did. I wanted to help others understand Asperger's, but this project helped me, too. I learned a lot from it, and it gave me a reason to stay motivated in spite of my difficulties. Life is tough when you feel different and isolated, but filmmaking gives me a way to stay connected with the world. Plus, I love every aspect of making films, so I had fun with it! NOTE: While Asperger's Syndrome is no longer a diagnosis in the DSM, it remains legitimate for individuals diagnosed before 2013 (including those featured in this film, which began production before 2013). Asperger's is currently associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, meaning those who meet the DSM-IV criteria for Asperger's (but didn't get a diagnosis of Asperger's before 2013) would now likely be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
