Shock, which can be caused by any condition that prevents the blood in your body from circulating properly, is the main reason why people who are suffering from a heart attack or heart failure turn pale all of a sudden. Chronic or sudden fatigue 7:02 Fatigue can be one of the main symptoms indicating an impending heart attack. Women are more likely to experience heart-related fatigue than men, with 70% of female heart attack patients reporting that they’d felt extremely tired before their episode. Physical or mental activity isn't the reason for such exhaustion, and it increases by the end of the day if it’s due to a failing heart. It’s really hard for this symptom to go unnoticed. Sometimes it's exhausting just to perform even the simplest tasks, like making the bed or taking a shower. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) Anatomy, Nursing, Heart Disease, Pathophysiology, Treatment Part 1

19:57
Coronary artery disease (also called coronary heart disease) NCLEX lecture video on the nursing, anatomy, pathophysiology, treatment, and signs and symptoms of coronary artery disease. CAD is the build up of fatty plaques due to atherosclerosis that causes the arteries of the heart to become narrow. This leads to restrictive blood supply to the heart muscle which leads to chest pain (stable or unstable angina) to myocardial infraction (MI). The main coronary arteries that supply the heart with blood include the left and right coronary artery. The left coronary artery branches off into the left circumflex artery and left anterior descending artery. The right coronary artery branches off into the right marginal artery and posterior descending artery. If ischemia has been present for a long time collateral circulation can develop as well. This is where tiny blood vessels re-route the blood supply to the heart to pass the blockage. Signs and symptoms of heart disease include: chest pain (especially with activity and is relieved with rest which is known as stable angina), shortness of breath, and feeling very tired. Coronary artery disease is diagnosed in various ways: lipid profile which measures the cholesterol levels, EKG, stress test, and heart catheterization. CAD is treated with medications (discussed in part 2 of this series), heart catheterization (most commonly with stent placement) or coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Don't forget to check out part 2 of this lecture which covers nursing interventions and pharmacology aspects of CAD. Coronary heart disease: Causes, symptoms and treatment

13:16
Coronary heart disease: Causes, symptoms and treatment Coronary heart disease refers to a narrowing of the coronary arteries - the blood vessels that supply oxygen and blood to the heart. It is also known as coronary artery disease. It is a major cause of illness and death. Coronary heart disease (CHD), normally happens when cholesterol accumulates on the artery walls, creating plaques. The arteries narrow, reducing blood flow to the heart. Sometimes, a clot can obstruct the flow of blood to the heart muscle. CHD commonly causes angina pectoris (chest pain), shortness of breath, myocardial infarction, or heart attack. CHD is the most common type of heart disease in the United States, where it accounts for 370,000 deaths every year. Fast facts on coronary heart disease: Coronary heart disease accounted for 23.5 percent of all deaths in the U.S. in 2008. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack each year. Warning signs and symptoms include chest pain or discomfort and shortness of breath. Examples of coronary heart disease include angina and heart attack.

4 Symptoms of Heart Disease | Heart Disease

01:08
Watch more How to Understand Heart Disease videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/512504-4-Symptoms-of-Heart-Disease-Heart-Disease So what are some of the symptoms of heart disease that we can look out for? Some of them are pretty basic. They would be chest pressure or pain, shortness of breath, lower extremity edema, or palpitations. If we talk a little bit about each one, chest pain can sometimes be confusing. When doctors reference pain, we're not always talking about a sharp discomfort in the chest. As a matter of fact, sometimes pressure or discomfort in the chest, would be more concerning. In terms of shortness of breath, it could be either shortness of breath at rest, or when you try to exert yourself, such as going up a flight or two of stairs. The lower extremity swelling is something we call edema, and you'll notice that usually at the end of the day. A good way to test it is just by pinching the ankle and seeing if your pinch leaves a dent in the skin. And the palpitations, that's a tough one to describe, but usually it means an awareness or funny sensation of the heart that can be either irregular or fast. If you have any of these symptoms, the best thing to do would of course be to speak with your doctor, because although sometimes this can be a sign of heart disease, obviously a lot of other things could also cause these kinds of symptoms.

Don't Ignore These 8 SIGNS of CARDIAC DISEASES. It's Could Be EASY to OVERLOOKED - HEART HEALTH Tips

10:47
11 Possible CARDIAC DISEASE Symptoms You Shouldn't Ignore. Never Ignore These 11 Heart Symptoms & Could Be EASY to OVERLOOKED. If something went wrong with your heart, would you know it? Not all heart problems come with clear warning signs. There is not always an alarming chest clutch followed by a fall to the floor like you see in movies. Some #heart-diseases-symptoms don’t even happen in your chest, and it’s not always easy to tell what’s going on. "If you're not sure, get it checked out," says Charles Chambers, MD, director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute. That’s especially true if you are 60 or older, are overweight, or have diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, says Vincent Bufalino, MD, an #American-Heart-Association spokesman. "The more risk factors you have," he says, "the more you should be concerned about anything that might be heart-related." Especially watch out for these problems: 1. #Chest-Discomfort It’s the most common sign of heart danger. If you have a blocked artery or are having a heart attack, you may feel pain, tightness, or pressure in your chest. "Everyone has a different word for that feeling," Chambers says. "Some people say it's like an elephant is sitting on them. Other people say it's like a pinching or burning." The feeling usually lasts longer than a few minutes. It may happen when you're at rest or when you're doing something physical. If it's just a very brief pain -- or if it's a spot that hurts more when you touch or push on it -- it's probably not your heart, Chambers says. You should still get it checked out by a doctor. If the symptoms are more severe and don’t go away after a few minutes, you should call 911. Also, keep in mind you can have #heart-problems -- even a heart attack -- without chest pain. That’s particularly common among women. 2. Nausea, Indigestion, Heartburn, or Stomach Pain Some people have these symptoms during a heart attack. They may even vomit, Chambers says. Women are more likely to report this type of symptom than men are. Of course, you can have an upset stomach for many reasons that have nothing to do with your heart. It could just be something you ate, after all. But you need to be aware that it can also happen during a heart attack. So if you feel this way and you’re at risk for heart problems, let a doctor find out what’s going on, especially if you also have any of the other symptoms on this list. 3. Pain that Spreads to the Arm Another classic #heart-attack-symptom is pain that radiates down the left side of the body. "It almost always starts from the chest and moves outward," Chambers says. "But I have had some patients who have mainly arm pain that turned out to be heart attacks." 4. You Feel Dizzy or Lightheaded A lot of things can make you lose your balance or feel faint for a moment. Maybe you didn’t have enough to eat or drink, or you stood up too fast. But if you suddenly feel unsteady and you also have chest discomfort or shortness of breath, call a doctor right away. "It could mean your blood pressure has dropped because your heart isn't able to pump the way it should," Bufalino says. 5. Throat or Jaw Pain By itself, throat or jaw pain probably isn't heart related. More likely, it's caused by a muscular issue, a cold, or a sinus problem. But if you have pain or pressure in the center of your chest that spreads up into your throat or jaw, it could be a sign of a heart attack. Call 911 and seek medical attention to make sure everything is all right. 6. You Get Exhausted Easily If you suddenly feel fatigued or winded after doing something you had no problem doing in the past -- like climbing the stairs or carrying groceries from the car -- make an appointment with your doctor right away. "These types of significant changes are more important to us than every little ache and pain you might be feeling," Bufalino says. Extreme exhaustion or unexplained weakness, sometimes for days at a time, can be a symptom of heart disease, especially for women. 7. #Snoring It’s normal to snore a little while you snooze. But unusually loud snoring that sounds like a gasping or choking can be a sign of sleep apnea. That’s when you stop breathing for brief moments several times at night while you are still sleeping. This puts extra stress on your heart. Your doctor can check whether you need a sleep study to see if you have this condition. If you do, you may need a CPAP machine to smooth out your breathing while you sleep. 8. #Sweating Breaking out in a cold sweat for no obvious reason could signal a heart attack. If this happens along with any of these other symptoms, call 911 to get to a hospital right away. Don’t try to drive yourself.

Well heart failure is really any condition in which the heart is not able to keep up with the demands of the body. Most of the time, we're talking about a weakened heart muscle, and this can have a variety of different signs or symptoms. The most common of which would be effort and tolerance, or the inability to exert yourself, shortness of breath, or swelling in the lower extremities, or legs. If you describe any of these symptoms to your doctor, he or she may want to start with some basic tests to see how your heart muscle is functioning. They will listen to your heart, do an EKG, and oftentimes, go on to do a cardiac ultrasound, or echo cardiogram. Heart failure has a spectrum of severity. It can come in mild, moderate or severe. And oftentimes, the mild stages may have minimal or no symptoms. The good news is there is treatment for heart failure and there are ways to prevent your risk. So the classic symptoms, in conjunction with a doctor's evaluation would be how to recognize if you have heart failure.

28:00
For women, the lifetime risk of dying of cardiovascular disease is almost one in three. Fortunately, most cardiovascular disease in women is preventable. Kathleen W. McNicholas, M.D., warns women that its time to stop thinking about heart disease as a mans disease. She speaks with the authority of both a doctor and a patient. A seasoned surgeon in her mid-50s at Christiana Care Health System, McNicholas had open-heart surgery herself at Christiana Hospital in 2003. "Two thirds of women and one third of doctors dont recognize the symptoms of heart attack in females—symptoms that are often more subtle than the classic elephant sitting on your chest," she says.

Heart Valve Disease Symptoms and Causes

02:34
Some people with heart valve disease might not experience symptoms for many years. Signs and symptoms of heart valve disease may include: Abnormal sound (heart murmur) when a doctor is listening to the heart beating with a stethoscope Fatigue Shortness of breath, particularly when you have been very active or when you lie down Swelling of your ankles and feet Dizziness Fainting Irregular heartbeat When to see a doctor If you have a heart murmur, your doctor may recommend you visit a cardiologist. If you develop any symptoms that may suggest heart valve disease, see your doctor. Causes Your heart has four valves that keep blood flowing in the correct direction. These valves include the mitral valve, tricuspid valve, pulmonary valve and aortic valve. Each valve has flaps (leaflets or cusps) that open and close once during each heartbeat. Sometimes, the valves don't open or close properly, disrupting the blood flow through your heart to your body. Heart valve disease may be present at birth (congenital). It can also occur in adults due to many causes and conditions, such as infections and other heart conditions. Heart valve problems may include: Regurgitation. In this condition, the valve flaps don't close properly, causing blood to leak backward in your heart. This commonly occurs due to valve flaps bulging back, a condition called prolapse. Stenosis. In valve stenosis, the valve flaps become thick or stiff, and they may fuse together. This results in a narrowed valve opening and reduced blood flow through the valve. Atresia. In this condition, the valve isn't formed, and a solid sheet of tissue blocks the blood flow between the heart chambers. Risk factors Several factors can increase your risk of heart valve disease, including: Older age History of certain infections that can affect the heart History of certain forms of heart disease or heart attack High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and other heart disease risk factors Heart conditions present at birth (congenital heart disease) Complications Heart valve disease can cause many complications, including: Heart failure Stroke Blood clots Heart rhythm abnormalities Death
