How to make diseases disappear | Rangan Chatterjee | TEDxLiverpool

18:29
Can you actually make a disease disappear? Dr Rangan Chatterjee thinks you can. Often referred to as the doctor of the future, Rangan is changing the way that we look at illness and how medicine will be practised in years to come. He highlighted his methods in the groundbreaking BBC TV show, Doctor In The House, gaining him much acclaim from patients, his contemporaries and the media. He is the author of the international bestseller, The 4 Pillar Plan - http://amzn.to/2yGfpuB which has been released in the USA and Canada under the title, How to Make Disease Disappear - https://amzn.to/2GstJf6 Rangan’s 15 years of clinical experience in the NHS includes internal medicine, immunology and general practice. A pioneer in the emerging field of progressive medicine, he also uses techniques from other disciplines he has studied including movement kinetics and functional medicine. His own journey of learning was accelerated when family members fell ill and now Rangan is helping people to take control of their health by addressing the root causes of their illnesses, something which is often not achieved in 21st century health care, evidenced by a steady increase in the rates of chronic disease. Rangan is a super-generalist, looking at as many factors as possible which can create wellness or illness. His talk is testament to how our thinking around the concept of disease needs to change to help form a map for future healthcare. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

A good death - Molly's story

12:30
Dying is a social and spiritual and cultural event, and only part of that is to do with medicine. This moving film tells the story of a good death.. and a good bereavement. Molly and Judy's story demonstrates how early conversations make a big difference. The film also shows what can happen when health and social care teams work together and communicate well. Only by talking openly - and honestly - with those closest to us, and those providing our care, can we help to ensure that our final wishes are me. All families should expect the same compassion, level and quality of end of life / palliative care shown in this film. For further information, please search "A good death - Molly's story" or visit the web pages below: This film will be useful for patients, families, GPs, clinicians, care staff, social workers, care managers, carers, community nurses, nursing staff and local Health and Wellbeing boards. Caring for Carers: Depression, Anxiety and the Impact of Caring

01:04:17
There are nearly 2.6 million people in Australia who are carers. Carers provide unpaid care and support to people who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail. These people may not call themselves 'carers'; they are partners, parents, siblings, relatives, other family members and/or friends. Carers come from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. They may be working or studying, as well as providing care. They may be any age. Caring can be a demanding role that requires mental and physical energy, commitment and dedication. Carers in outer regional and remote areas experience higher rates of disability or a long-term health condition themselves, and are more likely to experience financial hardship than carers in major cities. Indigenous people in rural and remote Australia are also more likely to be carers than non-Indigenous people in these areas. Caring for a person with a mental illness has particular challenges. The episodic nature of mental illness, the stigma still associated with it, the symptoms of the illness, and the struggle to obtain appropriate treatment and care for a family member or friend, can all contribute to a carer feeling overwhelmed. Carers need strategies to manage these challenges. Their experiences can predispose carers to mental illness themselves. In 2007, carers were found to have the lowest wellbeing of any large group recorded by the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index in The Wellbeing of Australians: Carer Health and Wellbeing. This program covers two main areas. Firstly, it discusses the experiences and particular challenges for carers supporting a person with mental health problems. The importance of carers as part of the care team, and useful strategies for supporting a person with a mental illness are included. Secondly, the program acknowledges the impact of caring on the carer's physical and mental health. It assists health practitioners to develop practical ways to support and encourage carers to look after themselves. Support, counselling and respite services are also examined. The program is introduced by Joan Hughes, CEO of Carers Australia. Produced by the Rural Health Education Foundation http://www.rhef.com.au/

Ruma Abedona Hospice

06:26
Santanu Chakraborty along with a few of his friends founded Ruma Abedona Hospice in the year 2002. It was a small beginning after the demise of Santanu's wife Ruma in October 2000. Although Ruma died after 22 months of care from Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, she died peacefully and without pain. Through his sorrow, Santanu came to realize that by the loss of his beloved wife, God had a greater plan mapped out for him and he began to see the vision of Palliative Care. In October 2001, Santanu was invited by Mr. & Mrs. Bill & Joan Grosser, to visit Australia to take a palliative care course at the McAuley Training Centre in Perth, Western Australia, presently he is persuing post-graduation in palliative care through Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia. Dr Rosalie Shaw; a pioneer for Palliative care facilities in Western Australia and also the Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network, heard about Santanu while she was on holiday in Perth. She met him at this time and gave him a letter of commendation after talking to him at length. Santanu returned back to India and founded Ruma Abedona Hospice on July 29th 2002. Since then Dr. Rosalie Shaw has continued to give her on-going support to Ruma Abedona Hospice. At present along with Dr. Sanjay Sud, Dr. Arup Bandyopadhyay and scores of volunteers; RAH is furthering the cause of palliative care to those who are in need. On the 9th of February 2005, the official inauguration of Ruma Abedona Hospice was celebrated. Ruma Abedona Hospice extends care, medication, instruction and physical, spiritual & emotional support for terminally ill patients. WebSite URL : http://www.rumahospice.org.in/

The care that the Hospice provides is holistic and looks after the whole person, and their family/carers, helping with emotional and spiritual issues as well as physical symptoms. The Peace Hospice focuses on enabling patients to live their lives to the full and providing the best quality of life when a cure is not possible. It costs £3.1m a year to provide these services and over 75% of this is supported through charitable donations. All the care that the Hospice provides to its patients is free.

How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change | Allan Savory

22:20
"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert. Dr. Kate Granger: "#hellomynameis" | Talks at Google

35:55
Dr Kate Granger visited Google's office in Mountain View, CA to discuss her work on the #hellomynameis campaign, whilst facing a terminal illness and continuing her work as a doctor. During a hospital stay in the summer of 2013, she made the stark observation that many staff looking after her did not introduce themselves before delivering care. This felt very wrong to Kate, so encouraged and supported by her husband, she decided to start the #hellomynameis campaign to encourage and remind healthcare staff about the importance of introductions in the delivery of care. During this talk, Kate will speak to the power of social media to drive change in our world and her experiences driving the #hellomynameis campaign. Dr Kate Granger is a Consultant at Pinderfields Hospital in Yorkshire, in the UK. She was struck down with terminal cancer 4 years ago at the age of just 29 and has defied the odds by still being here today, as well as being able to work part time as a doctor. She has also raised over $270,000 for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre through the writing of two books amongst other things and changing both the NHS and global healthcare through a campaign called #hellomynameis. Her healthcare work has reaped many accolades including an MBE, an honorary doctorate, two fellowships from different royal colleges, a president’s medal, and various inspirational awards along with a woman of achievement award. Call for Equitable Indigenous Healthcare in Canada: Nation to Nation Collaboration

11:55
This film includes interviews with Indigenous traditional Knowledge Keeper Rose Richardson and her husband, healthcare patient Mayor Ric Richardson, as well as Director of Surgical Oncology at the University of Saskatchewan Dr. Gary Groot. This policy proposal was created by a diverse group of Indigenous & non Indigenous youth at the Canadian Medical Association Think Camp 2017. Through multiple interviews, the film covers issues such as the lack of inclusion of Indigenous culture, individuals, and teachings in the Canadian medical system, lack of adequate accessibility to healthcare in many Indigenous communities, and lack of support for Indigenous patients who choose treatment paths that include traditional healing methods. Based on meetings with Indigenous Elders, Healers, and healthcare patients, as well as Western medical professionals, this youth-created proposal includes three initiatives that the youth believe could help to rectify issues surrounding Indigenous healthcare in Canada, by addressing the systemic root causes of these issues. Proposal Written by Areeba Bilal, Andrew Kim, Reagan King, Retaj Ramadan, Sidney Ray Shacter, Savannah Thompson, & Emily van de Velde. Special thanks to all of the presenters, medical professionals, & Knowledge Keepers who shared their wisdom, time, talents, and lived experiences in the creation of this film.
