Vitamin B12 deficiency can sneak up on you, and can lead to a myriad of diseases and disorders. Know the signs and symptoms. You could be deficient yet still test in the so-called range of "normal B12" on a blood test, especially if you have taken an oral B12 supplement of uncertain quality, or you have been under-treating the deficiency. Oral B12 supplements do not work for all patients; patients with digestive/absorption problems benefit from B12 injections, as do patients with nerve damage.

These minerals can inhibit the uptake of important nutrients, like amino acids, as well as other critical minerals.* The first mineral you don't want in your multi is zinc. Zinc can inhibit the uptake of amino acids, thus creating an unwanted deficiency! Since it is important to take a multivitamin with a meal, such as breakfast, a multivitamin that includes zinc could interfere with your body's ability to utilize the amino acids in the protein you consumed at breakfast. That could interfere with muscle growth and strength gains, which is the last thing that you want!* Calcium is another big problem in multivitamin supplements. Your body stores an extra supply of it, so it can take up to 2 years for any vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms to creep up on you. You risk permanent damage to your nervous system and brain if you let this one get too far though, so be on the lookout for those symptoms. Early Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms: Unusual fatigue Faulty digestion No appetite Nausea Loss of menstruation Tingling hands and feet (start of serious deficiency) If you don't get levels back up from there, it can result in permanent nerve damage and get very serious, causing blindness or deafness. Also, homocysteine levels will be high (risk factor for heart disease, stroke and complications during pregnancy) long before any of the early vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms show up. If children don't get enough B12 during childhood, their levels can be corrected but the period where they didn't have enough can have permanent effects on their brain and nerve functions. Maintaining your own B12 levels while breastfeeding is crucial. You can be tested for B12 deficiency by your doctor, and the most accurate method of testing is a urine or blood test called a Methylmalonic Acid test (MMA). It can detect deficiency much earlier and much more accurately than the standard blood test most doctors use to test for serum cobalamin levels and pernicious anemia. If you're seeing vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms, or show low levels in a blood test, the obvious solution is to raise B12 levels. Depending on how low your levels are, go for any or all of the following: - supplements (my recommendations here: http://bit.ly/vit-B12) - fortified foods (nut/grain milks, cereals, certain nutritional yeasts) - B12 injections (done by a doctor, for severe deficiency or people who aren't absorbing B12 through digestion) Have you ever noticed any of these symptoms in yourself? I'm not sure if it's because commercially available products tend to be fairly expensive or maybe, because oral forms of vitamin c are so readily available, that it just seems logical that you should be able to make your own serum. Today I'll give you my take. Let's start exploring this topic with simply dissolving the crystals of vitamin c that are in this capsule or tablet, in water... ...If you put the resulting solution of dissolved vitamin c on your skin, as soon as the water evaporates, the vitamin c that was dissolved in the water will re crystallize on your skin before it can be absorbed. Since crystallized vitamin c can't be absorbed into your skin, it can't work as an antioxidant. See, you need a carrier to hold the vitamin c molecule in the solution so it can penetrate into your skin cells. If you have sufficient chemistry skills to grind up vitamin c... ...and use a carrier like propylene glycol or glycerin, and you know how to calculate and measure the amount of ascorbic acid you need, you can solubilize it and mix it properly. That in theory, could yield a functioning, topical vitamin c product. However, the problem here is that you are JUST going to have ascorbic acid, regular vitamin c, which is water soluble so it doesn't penetrate the lipid membranes of skin cells very well. Because it's acidic, it can be irritating when applied to the skin. And lastly, the acidic form is unstable because it's very quickly oxidized, and thereby inactivated. For those reasons, if you're going to make a topical vitamin c product, you really want to use the ester form of vitamin c, not the acid form. The advantages to esters are that, first, because they are fat soluble, they better penetrate the lipid based barrier of your skin. Second, because they are not acidic they tend to be less irritating. And third, the fatty groups on the esters increase the stability of the vitamin c so its not as easily oxidized and inactivated. At the end of the day, when the vitamin c ester is absorbed into the skin, it then is changed back to regular ascorbic acid, so what you've done is in a non irritating fashion... you've effected better penetration at higher levels and maintained stability by using an esterified form. Creating this is beyond the scope of most amateur chemists. The final reason to not DIY vitamin c is that since it's so difficult to assess the efficacy of topical antioxidants, especially at home, by using a DIY vitamin c product, while they might feel nice, you could go on for months or years wasting your time with a product that doesn't work. So your take away today is, why take a chance on a product you don't know and miss out on the very valuable benefits available from professionally prepared topical antioxidants. CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- There is yet another reason breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, at least for women who take vitamins.A new report from the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics presented some new data on the importance of your morning meal.In most cases, if you are taking vitamins, it is suggested you take them with food. Vitamins don't give you energy, but they allow the energy from the food to get in to the cell. Bethesda Fertility talked more about this research. Here is what they found with this study.They were looking at Vitamin D absorption and found that those who got a little fat at breakfast absorbed the vitamin better. That means eating some low-fat yogurt, getting some butter on your toast or eating your cereal with two percent milk will allow you to absorb the Vitamin D better than those who eat a fat-free breakfast. Most people go to doctors to test for blood nutrient levels, but in most cases these tests are highly misleading because they don't test what nutrients we are absorbing. The ideal test is a blood spectra test because it measures nutrient absorption and won't give false highs. Evenstill, spectra testing and nutrient rda's is still not tailored to the individual, therefore people can still come up short in some nutrients. Everyone has a unique level of nutrients that they need according to their metabolism and DNA. Dr Rick Dina tells me that a married couple eating almost identicle diets can have complete different blood results. In the modern world of stress there are various nutrients we can need a lot more of than what the current rda's suggest. Some people require up to 10 times the rda for B vitamins. Gabriel Cousens also suggests that 30% of people who exceeed the rda for vitamin B12 get great health benefits. People who exceed the rda for omega 3 ALA and convert to EPA/DHA also are better able to manage stress (see links and quotes below), so worth considering going higher in omega 3 fats. Many raw vegans still get stressed and angry when challened, so we can always be doing diet better, and the way is to focus on more FRESH nutritious foods. The days of teaching low fat/high carb are over - some require higher protein, higher fat and lower carb - others require lower fat, medium protein and medium carb etc. We need to be able to tailor the macronutrient ratios to one's individual needs, and sometimes this also needs to be adjusted to the seasons. The other key is to try and find out what nutrient levels we need to be at our best. Some require lower nutrient levels, but others need a lot higher nutrient levels. We must experiment to see what micro nutrient levels and macronutrient levels we do best on. Very few raw food leaders are teaching custom diets...most teach a one diet fits all aproach in terms of macronutrient ratios, and this is why many would be failing a raw vegan diet. Now is the time to use the information and science that we have to move forward from the past and start customising our diets. The days of diet gurus are over because they largely haven't helped people succeed on a raw vegan diet because they use old outdated teachings...the responsiblity now lies on the individual to develop consciousness so they can experiment and find a diet that works.

Vitamin b12 is made by neither animals nor plants, but by microbes. A whole foods plant based diet can help prevent, treat and reverse many of our leading causes of death. But, because of current agricultural practices, it's difficult to obtain vitamin b12 naturally any more. Before we started destroying the soil and washing things, we used to get it from things like unwashed vegetables and well water. Non-human animals still get some from there and some from eating their own faeces. It can also be found in dead animals, because they get some from the soil and farmers inject them with it. However, since B12 can be destroyed by some forms of heating, meat, dairy and eggs aren't necessarily a reliable source. Both Vegans and non-Vegans can become deficient if they don't supplement. But it's fortified into many everyday products like cereals, so most people don't have to think about it. Our bodies can re-absorb it from our intestine, so it can take years for a deficiency to occur. As a Vegan, you can get it from fortified foods like dairy free milks, yeast flakes or marmite. You can also get it from tablets, sprays and injections. Since credible doctors like Michael Greger recommend supplementing b12 as a Vegan, the simplest option is to take a weekly b12 supplement providing at least 2500 micrograms. It's easy to dismiss supplementation as unhealthy and unnatural, but in the world we live in, this kind of purity is illogical and unhealthy in itself.
