The Dark Side of Beta Carotene

03:40
Research published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry showed that there could be hazards to consuming excessive amounts of beta carotene. It could paradoxically produce insufficient vitamin A. Beta carotene is composed of two vitamin A molecules. When enzymes cleave them apart properly both molecules of vitamin A are effective. However, when cleaved at the wrong place, one molecule still takes up the receptor site, but deactivates. This, ironically, can lead to one molecule working as an anti-vitamin A and lead to a vitamin A deficiency! Blood levels of this anti vitamin A are detectable in all people becausethey are found in what we eat. Studies a couple of decades ago showed that people who smoked who took beta carotene supplements had a greater chance of getting lung cancer than those not taking the supplement. We know that oxidants such as environmental pollutants and tobacco smoke increase the production of defective vitamin A. If we continue genetically engineering for higher levels of beta carotene, we need to be certain that the right form of beta carotene is what is engineered...another reason why genetic engineering is a very bad idea! Dealing With Vegan Vitamin A Deficiency

11:02
Vegan Vitamin A Deficiency Article: http://wp.me/P771GG-bb Some are critical of vegan or plant-based diets because they feel they won't supply enough Vitamin A for those who are genetically ill equipped to convert carotenoids into the retinol (useful) form of Vitamin A. They point to most of subsaharan Africa and parts of Asia, where people eat mostly plant foods and have soaring rates of Vitamin A deficiency: night blindness and corneal scaring, immune and thyroid problems, and other related issues. If people in developed countries give up Vitamin A-rich meat, dairy, and eggs, they argue, the part of the population which doesn't convert carotenoids into retinol efficiently will become Vitamin A deficient too. In this video we're going to dive into whether or not this is a legitimate concern, and if large parts of the population really are genetically ill equipped to convert carotenoids into Vitamin A. Vitamin A Deficiency Harms Cells Impairing your Immune System, Vision and more... Prevent It

04:00
Lack of vitamin A in the body has a detrimental effect on the hematopoietic system in the bone marrow. The deficiency causes a loss of important blood stem cells, scientists now report. They have identified a vitamin A metabolite known as retinoic acid that is vital to the process of activating and inactivating stem cells to regenerate cells. These findings may open up new prospects in cancer therapy. Many specialized cells, such as in the skin, intestinal mucosa or blood, have a lifespan of only a few days. Therefore, steady replenishment of these cells is indispensable. They arise from so-called "adult" stem cells that divide continuously. When retinoic acid is absent, active stem cells are unable to return to a dormant state and mature into specialized blood cells instead. Researchers hope the findings may play a role in cancer treatments because cancer cells, like stem cells, rest in a state of dormancy. The link for this article is posted in the description. Vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin, is an essential nutrient which plays numerous important roles in human health. The most crucial ones include vision, proper growth and immune function. Dietary sources of vitamin A fall into two categories - foods which contain preformed vitamin A and foods which contain provitamin A carotenes, compounds that are converted to vitamin A in the body. The body's ability to properly absorb preformed vitamin A is dependent on healthy mucosal cells plus the presence of bile, pancreatic enzymes, fat, protein and antioxidants. Absorption efficiency of vitamin A in the diet is typically high, about 80-90%. Some of the best sources of preformed vitamin A include liver, kidney, butter, whole milk, and fortified low-fat skim milk. Conversion of provitamin A carotenes to vitamin A depends on the presence of protein, zinc, vitamin C and thyroid hormones. The absorption efficiency of beta-carotene is only about 40-60%. The body is able to convert beta-carotenes and other carotenes to vitamin A, and excellent sources of these provitamin A carotenes are dark green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach and collards; yellow-orange vegetables like carrots, yams, squash, and sweet potatoes; plus other foods like apricots, green peppers and dandelion root. Vitamin A supplements could be helpful for health conditions such as AIDS and dry eyes, as well as respiratory tract infections like bronchitis and pneumonia. In addition, they could be used to help treat skin conditions and help with viral infections. However, it must be noted that excessive supplementation with high doses of vitamin A, over 50,000 IU, can have detrimental health effects. It is thus advisable that any high-dose vitamin A therapy or regime be supervised by a nutrition-oriented health practitioner. Beta-carotene, on the other hand, exhibits no known toxicity. 🔗 Sources: 🔗 http://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(17)30464-6?_returnURL=http%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0092867417304646%3Fshowall%3Dtrue https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/05/170505112612.htm https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Retinoic_acid#section=3D-Conformer https://www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/food-sources-of-vitamin-A.php I appreciate you watching! ❤ Good Day and Good Health The Refreshing Point Vitamin A Deficiency Harms Stem Cells Impairing your Immune System, Vision and more... Synthetic Beta-Carotene is a commonly used supplement that is supposed to be an anti-oxidant. It is commonly found in most multivitamins. Beta-carotene in vitamins is synthetically made from chemicals in most cases, unless it is a whole food vitamin. Beta-carotene supplements have been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer. Beta-carotene from foods is the best way to get a complete vitamin. Foods high in beta-carotene are sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, broccoli, and spinach. One gathering of mice was hereditarily changed with the goal that they were not able store dietary vitamin A. The other gathering, in the interim, could store the vitamin typically from nourishments. What scientists found was that the lab mice who were not able store vitamin An additionally experienced beta cell demise. At the end of the day, the mice were not able create insulin. Vitamin A nourishments to control glucose:. In addition, when specialists expelled vitamin A from the eating methodologies of more advantageous mice, they saw that this prompted a lot of beta cell misfortune. It brought about far less insulin being created and considerably higher blood glucose levels. In any case, at whatever point analysts reestablished vitamin A to the weight control plans of the mice, beta cell and insulin generation climbed relentlessly, and blood glucose levels came back to typical. Strikingly, past investigations demonstrated that amid fetal improvement, vitamin An is essential for beta cell development. Be that as it may, it was never certain whether vitamin An assumed a similar part all through adulthood. Ordinarily, vitamin An is found in organic products, vegetables, meats and dairy items. It helps cell development, adding to better vision and a solid safe framework. There are two sorts of the vitamin: preformed vitamin An, otherwise called retinol – introduce in meat, poultry, fish and dairy items; and master vitamin An, or beta-carotene – found in various leafy foods. There is some proof to recommend excessively preformed vitamin An isn't beneficial for you, putting you at expanded hazard for hip break, and can meddle with the useful activities of vitamin D in the body. Q/A: Not Getting Enough Vitamin A on a Vegan Diet

07:22
Donations to support this channel can be made here: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=D3HRHLCAT4XJJ Follow me on IG: christopher_morales_121093 Now before I delve into this topic, I first want to say that I'm not proposing the claim that "a person following a vegan diet WILL develop a vitamin A deficiency." What I will say is that being on a vegan diet may predispose someone towards a vitamin A deficiency. The first reason is that despite the fact that vegans ( in general) consume more vegetables rich in vitamin A doesn't necessarily mean that all of it is being absorbed. Whenever someone tells me there vitamin deficient, the first question I ask is "what vitamin is it?" OBVIOUSLY....Vitamins A, E, D, & K are all fat soluble, while Vitamins B & C are water soluble. This difference is important because if you eat let's say a low fat diet, your ability to absorb fat soluble vitamins can impair their absorption. (1) Just a little anecdote, something I noticed when I was a HCLFV was that my skin always had a yellowish, sort of orangish hue which isn't harmful. However, it was a sign that I was not properly absorbing the vitamin A I was taking in. Once I started to increase the fat in my diet, this significantly went and decreased. Now if we look at vitamin A, it can be found in two forms: 1. Retinol, which is the vitamin absorbed from animal sources 2. Carotenes, which is the vitamin absorbed from plant sources such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, xanthophylls, etc. Vegans don't get retinol, but instead only ingest the carotenes which needs to be converted to retinol. In the majority of cases, most people can perform this conversion. However, their's some limiting factors that can impair it. Like I had mentioned an individual may not be eating enough fat in their diet....another thing that may be happening is a deficiency in zinc which is a mineral that allows for the proper absorption, transportation, and metabolism of vitamin A. The reason why I mentioned this is that zinc acts as a precursor molecule to the synthesis of vitamin A transport proteins, as well as a cofactor in the conversion of retinol (the alcohol) to retinal (the aldehyde..the active form). Now if you look at foods relatively high in zinc such as beans, nuts/seeds, breads, even greens - they can all be eaten, however, these types of foods all contain phytates. Phytates (sometimes called phytic acid) are naturally found antioxidant molecules in these foods that have tendency to bind to minerals such as zinc. And what nutritional research suggests is that the requirement for zinc in vegetarians may be as much as 50% greater due to the amount of phytic acid in their diets (2). In other instances, individuals may have an inability to perform this conversion due to single nucleotide polymorphisms aka SNP's (which are variations in a single base pair of a DNA sequence)...in this instance their's a variation in the gene encoding for beta-catotene 15,15'monooxygenase, which is the enzyme needed to convert carotenes to retinol. (3) To summarize all the information together based on my experience and the experience of others, vitamin A typically isn't too much of an issue. However, when a person restricts certain foods in their diet, there needs to be some sort of compensation that occurs. With vegans, this may mean eating an extra serving or two of kale or spinach with their meals, or perhaps having a daily glass of carrot juice. If that's not enough, then adding some form of fat like coconut oil or olive oil to increase vitamin A absorption. If none of that works, then adding in supplementation - and then finally, of all else fails... they can either check to see if they have the particular SNP I mentioned or eat a piece of liver 2x a week too see if their levels improve. Vitamin A Benefits, Uses and Side Effects

11:33
Vitamin A is needed in the formation of our teeth and bones, immune system, eyes and skin. It also acts as an antioxidant to rid our body of free radicals, which cause us to age more quickly. Deficiency is one of the most common causes of blindness in children living in developing countries. Among its many jobs in the body, vitamin A (retinol) is also a DNA modulator; telling the immature dermal cells found under the uppermost layer of our skin to emerge to the surface. Without adequate amounts of this vitamin available, cell turnover is interrupted and can lead to premature aging of the skin. Failure to get enough of this fat-soluble vitamin can also permanently stunt the growth of infants – both in the womb and after birth. It's estimated that over 700,000 children die each year because of inadequate intake of vitamin A, which is found in the largest doses in fresh fish (primarily fish livers), animal livers, and chicken eggs in smaller amounts. Vitamin A - Chemical names (vitaminer) - retinol, retinal, and four carotenoids (including beta carotene). - Fat soluble - Deficiency may cause night-blindness and keratomalacia (eye disorder that results in a dry cornea) - Good sources include: liver, cod liver oil, carrot, broccoli, sweet potato, butter, kale, spinach, pumpkin, collard greens, some cheeses, egg, apricot, cantaloupe melon, milk. Retinol certainly has a great reputation, but what's important is the fact that these conclusions are based upon scientific, peer-reviewed experimentation. In one experiment, consisting of elderly (average age of 87) subjects, scientists applied Retinol-based lotion to one arm and non-Retinol lotion on the subject's other arm. After this time concluded, the University of Michigan Medical School dermatologists concluded that, Retinol "improves fine wrinkles associated with natural aging... Retinol-treated aged skin is more likely to withstand skin injury and ulcer formation along with improved appearance." This study continued as authority on the subject within the dermatology field after it was conducted.

Good Vitamin A Foods | Vitamins

01:28
Watch more Vitamins & Supplements videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/497544-Good-Vitamin-A-Foods-Vitamins Some great vitamin A foods include liver, cantaloupe, carrots, kale, broccoli, spinach, and sweet potato, some of my favorite foods. Why vitamin A is such a great vitamin is because it's a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are a group of compounds which help protect the body from the formation of free radicals. Free radicals cause tissue damage, premature aging, and tissue damage. So what antioxidants do, is they protect you from having too many free radicals in the body. A great way to visualize this is say you have an apple, if you cut the apple in half, if you just leave it there, it's going to start browning, that's the oxidation process. If you dip the apple in carrot juice, which contains vitamin A, it will stay white, and that's how antioxidants work in your body. For women, vitamin A is great because it helps alleviate the symptoms of PMS, helps prevent breast cancer, and also helps relieve yeast infections. Some signs of vitamin A deficiency include night blindness, (meaning its difficult for you to see at night), dry hair, brittle nails, dry skin, and a decreased immune system.

17 Foods Good For Beautiful Skin And Healthy Hair

04:04
#1 Sweet Potatoes – they are an excellent source of beta carotene, that converts into the powerful anti-aging vitamin A. This nutrient is vital for allowing proper moisture retention to the epidermis, helping to remove dead skin as well as preventing wrinkles. #2 Oats - they are rich in fiber, iron, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids, that stimulate hair growth, making it healthy and thick. #3 Almonds - they are a good source of flavonoids and vitamin E (a nutrient which is important for skin health). In addition, according to a study from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, almonds can help ward off damaging free radicals and possible even oxidative damage caused by smoking. #4 Lemons are packed with vitamin C, that helps the human body build collagen - a protein which is the primary connective tissue in the skin. Furthermore, vitamin C is an essential antioxidant which fights damage already done to the skin. #5 Red kidney beans are a storehouse of proteins, that help repair cells which have suffered free radical damage. #6 Flaxseeds are the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, that are required for a healthy heart, optimum brain function, and radiant skin. Moreover, research has concluded that the omega-3 fatty acids content in flaxseeds help soothe skin conditions, such as eczema or acne. #7 Carrots are a remarkable source of beta-carotene that transforms into vitamin A when ingested. It is crucial to note that none of the cells in the human body can function without vitamin A; therefore, it is recommended to consume a lot of foods rich in vitamin A. #8 Like so many dark green leafy vegetables, spinach is rich in amazing nutrients. For example, spinach has tons of vitamin A, plus iron, folate, beta carotene, and vitamin C. These important nutrients work together for a healthy scalp and mane and keep the hair moisturized, so it doesn't break. #9 Pomegranates are considered a hair and scalp superfood due to its antioxidant properties and UVA-blocking agents which prevent premature aging of the hair and skin. More importantly, they contain ellagic acid, which serves as a natural moisture sealant and makes the skin feel softer throughout the day. #10 Lentils are an excellent source of iron and protein, that support full-bodied hair. You can consume them in a hearty soup, as a side dish, or make your own lentil-veggie burgers. #11 Blueberries are loaded with anti-inflammatory agents and vitamins which help protect the skin from premature aging. Moreover, blueberries are rich in vitamin C, that keeps the skin strong and firm. #12 Brown rice is very high in selenium, an essential mineral which has been found to reduce acne in adults and teenagers when taken in conjunction with vitamin E. More importantly, selenium has also been shown to stimulate hair growth and decrease dandruff. #13 Kale is a good source of iron, and this mineral prevents hair brittleness and breakage. #14 Tomatoes are one of the best sources of the anti-aging antioxidant lycopene. Remember – the deeper, darker the tomato, the more loaded with lycopene it is. #15 Walnuts contain essential nutrients, such as - vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids that help the skin stay smooth and plump. More importantly, walnuts protect the hair from sun damage and keep it lustrous and shiny. #16 Due to their high content of minerals (such as potassium and iron), prunes are good to have if you suffer from thinning of hair, stiff hay-like dry hair, and hair discoloration. #17 Chia seeds are packed with hair nourishing minerals, vitamins, and fats (especially omega 3). For instance, a dry, flaky scalp is commonly attributed to lack of omega-3 in the diet. Thank you. This was our video with foods good for healthy and glowing skin and healthy hair.
