The Dark Side of Beta Carotene
Research published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry showed that there could be hazards to consuming excessive amounts of beta carotene. It could paradoxically produce insufficient vitamin A. Beta carotene is composed of two vitamin A molecules. When enzymes cleave them apart properly both molecules of vitamin A are effective. However, when cleaved at the wrong place, one molecule still takes up the receptor site, but deactivates. This, ironically, can lead to one molecule working as an anti-vitamin A and lead to a vitamin A deficiency! Blood levels of this anti vitamin A are detectable in all people becausethey are found in what we eat. Studies a couple of decades ago showed that people who smoked who took beta carotene supplements had a greater chance of getting lung cancer than those not taking the supplement. We know that oxidants such as environmental pollutants and tobacco smoke increase the production of defective vitamin A. If we continue genetically engineering for higher levels of beta carotene, we need to be certain that the right form of beta carotene is what is engineered...another reason why genetic engineering is a very bad idea! Lack of vitamin A in the body has a detrimental effect on the hematopoietic system in the bone marrow. The deficiency causes a loss of important blood stem cells, scientists now report. They have identified a vitamin A metabolite known as retinoic acid that is vital to the process of activating and inactivating stem cells to regenerate cells. These findings may open up new prospects in cancer therapy. Many specialized cells, such as in the skin, intestinal mucosa or blood, have a lifespan of only a few days. Therefore, steady replenishment of these cells is indispensable. They arise from so-called "adult" stem cells that divide continuously. When retinoic acid is absent, active stem cells are unable to return to a dormant state and mature into specialized blood cells instead. Researchers hope the findings may play a role in cancer treatments because cancer cells, like stem cells, rest in a state of dormancy. The link for this article is posted in the description. Vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin, is an essential nutrient which plays numerous important roles in human health. The most crucial ones include vision, proper growth and immune function. Dietary sources of vitamin A fall into two categories - foods which contain preformed vitamin A and foods which contain provitamin A carotenes, compounds that are converted to vitamin A in the body. The body's ability to properly absorb preformed vitamin A is dependent on healthy mucosal cells plus the presence of bile, pancreatic enzymes, fat, protein and antioxidants. Absorption efficiency of vitamin A in the diet is typically high, about 80-90%. Some of the best sources of preformed vitamin A include liver, kidney, butter, whole milk, and fortified low-fat skim milk. Conversion of provitamin A carotenes to vitamin A depends on the presence of protein, zinc, vitamin C and thyroid hormones. The absorption efficiency of beta-carotene is only about 40-60%. The body is able to convert beta-carotenes and other carotenes to vitamin A, and excellent sources of these provitamin A carotenes are dark green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach and collards; yellow-orange vegetables like carrots, yams, squash, and sweet potatoes; plus other foods like apricots, green peppers and dandelion root. Vitamin A supplements could be helpful for health conditions such as AIDS and dry eyes, as well as respiratory tract infections like bronchitis and pneumonia. In addition, they could be used to help treat skin conditions and help with viral infections. However, it must be noted that excessive supplementation with high doses of vitamin A, over 50,000 IU, can have detrimental health effects. It is thus advisable that any high-dose vitamin A therapy or regime be supervised by a nutrition-oriented health practitioner. What I will say is that being on a vegan diet may predispose someone towards a vitamin A deficiency. The first reason is that despite the fact that vegans ( in general) consume more vegetables rich in vitamin A doesn't necessarily mean that all of it is being absorbed. Whenever someone tells me there vitamin deficient, the first question I ask is "what vitamin is it?" OBVIOUSLY....Vitamins A, E, D, & K are all fat soluble, while Vitamins B & C are water soluble. This difference is important because if you eat let's say a low fat diet, your ability to absorb fat soluble vitamins can impair their absorption. (1) Just a little anecdote, something I noticed when I was a HCLFV was that my skin always had a yellowish, sort of orangish hue which isn't harmful. However, it was a sign that I was not properly absorbing the vitamin A I was taking in. Once I started to increase the fat in my diet, this significantly went and decreased. Now if we look at vitamin A, it can be found in two forms: 1. Retinol, which is the vitamin absorbed from animal sources 2. Carotenes, which is the vitamin absorbed from plant sources such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, xanthophylls, etc. Vegans don't get retinol, but instead only ingest the carotenes which needs to be converted to retinol. In the majority of cases, most people can perform this conversion. However, their's some limiting factors that can impair it. Like I had mentioned an individual may not be eating enough fat in their diet....another thing that may be happening is a deficiency in zinc which is a mineral that allows for the proper absorption, transportation, and metabolism of vitamin A. However, when a person restricts certain foods in their diet, there needs to be some sort of compensation that occurs. Why vitamin A is such a great vitamin is because it's a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are a group of compounds which help protect the body from the formation of free radicals. Free radicals cause tissue damage, premature aging, and tissue damage. So what antioxidants do, is they protect you from having too many free radicals in the body. A great way to visualize this is say you have an apple, if you cut the apple in half, if you just leave it there, it's going to start browning, that's the oxidation process. If you dip the apple in carrot juice, which contains vitamin A, it will stay white, and that's how antioxidants work in your body. For women, vitamin A is great because it helps alleviate the symptoms of PMS, helps prevent breast cancer, and also helps relieve yeast infections. Some signs of vitamin A deficiency include night blindness, (meaning its difficult for you to see at night), dry hair, brittle nails, dry skin, and a decreased immune system.
