9 Thyroid supplements Every Hypothyroid Patient Should Consider Using
Thyroid supplements (if used correctly) can help boost your thyroid function, help with weight loss and help you feel better. The problem comes with knowing WHICH supplements to take and at WHAT dose. It takes over 13 nutrients to create thyroid hormone, convert T4 to T3 and sensitize the cellular receptors to T3. Many thyroid supplements cram all of these nutrients into a supplement and call it "good". This is the WRONG approach to take. Instead basing your supplementation off of the needs of your body is far superior. That means using lab work and other markers to find what nutrients you need in what doses. 9 Thyroid supplements that I find most hypothyroid patients are deficient in: 1. Vitamin B12 - Thyroid hormone is involved in the proper absorption of thyroid hormone. See the video for a complete list of symptoms. Repleting low vitamin B12 is best done through sublingual or intramsucular injections. 2. Adrenal support - Most thyroid patients also have issues with cortisol dysregulation. If you have advanced adrenal fatigue most patients do better on adrenal glandulars. For more mild disease consider using adrenal adaptogens. If your cortisol is elevated consider using phosphatidylserine. 3. Zinc - Low levels of zinc can cause issues with your skin and issue with hair growth. Adding zinc boosts immune function, T4 to T3 conversion and acts as an anti inflammatory. Make sure to supplement with zinc bound to picolinic acid. 4. Iron - This is what I consider a "goldilocks" nutrient in that you don't want TOO much or TOO little. Unfortunately most doctors look for iron deficiency anemia and don't necessarily jus treat iron deficiency unless anemia accompanies it. Use these optimal levels to supplement with iron. 5. Magnesium - Hypothyroidism alters magnesium and low levels of magnesium can lead to issues like depression, anxiety and other changes like muscle cramps or restless leg syndrome. Replace low levels with magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate if you have constipation or magnsium threonate if you have neurological issues. 6. Selenium - This nutrient is involved in the thyroid conversion process. Not only that but supplementing has been shown to reduce TPO antibodies and boost the immune system. In addition using iodine with selenium can help reduce negative side effects. 7. Probiotics - Up to 20% of thyroid conversion happens in the gut and inflammation can reduce this number. Hypothyroidism sets up the gut for imbalances that lead to inflammation. Using probiotics can help improve your GI function. 8. Digestive enzymes - Hypothyroidism leads to low stomach acid which can predispose patients to malabsorption of certain nutrients. Using enzymes can help digest your food, increase nutrient absorption and if taken in between meals may promote the breakdown of immune complexes. 9. Iodine - If used correctly iodine can be helpful in boosting thyroid function. The thyroid hormone is made up of iodine moieties and low levels of iodine can reduce the amount of functioning thyroid hormone in the body. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck. (1) 2. Plays a role in metabolism, development, growth and body temperature. (1) 3. When not functioning properly, one can experience metabolism and weight problems, and even mood disorders, such as depression. (2) 4. How does the thyroid work? (3) a. The thyroid take iodine that you consume and combines it with the amino acid tryocine in order to convert it into the Thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). b. T4 and T3 and then transported via the bloodstream throughout your body, playing a key role in a properly functioning metabolism, which is the conversion of oxygen and calories into energy. c. T3 is four times as strong as t4 d. Another gland, the pituitary gland, is responsible for communicating with the thyroid, essentially telling it when to turn on and turn off the production of T3 and T4. The gland is in turn regulated by the region of the brain called the hypothalamus. e. You must have a proper amount of iodine consumption in order to feed the thyroid and ensure proper functioning - either too little or too much can lead to a slew of health problems. Essentially, without iodine, the thyroid cannot function. 5. Back in the early 1920s the US added iodine in salt due to a nutritional deficiency of iodine leading to diseases such as goiter. This was due to people not consuming enough iodine rich foods. (4) . The problem with this is that the iodine in the white table salts is not the naturally occurring iodine and contains chemicals that are bad for our health a. Naturally occurring salts, such as pink Himalayan sea salts, contain trace amounts of iodine and do not contain the chemicals that are bad for our health b. Other medical authorities agree that iodine deficiency can lead to fibrocystic breast disease and/or ovarian cysts iodine can similarly remove uterine fibroidsand one of the first conventional medical treatments for severe fibrosis was to paint the uterus with iodine. Some other medical conditions associated with iodine deficiency are goiters, Graves’ Disease, Hashimoto’s Disease, fatigue and impaired immune system function. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy can lead to miscarriages and reduced IQ in surviving offspring. The World Health Organization says that iodine deficiency is the largest single cause of mental retardation. Iodine also detoxifies the body by removing mercury, fluorides, chlorides and bromides. I'm talking like 100s of millions of dollars. But are they worth your money? This is a very common question, and you can’t expect an unbiased answer from a supplement manufacturer. Let’s have a closer look. TITLE: Hypothyroidism- Should I Use Nutrition Supplements? In a previous video we looked at three of the important nutrients you need for thyroid health, as well as whole food sources for each. I recommend you watch that first. Now lets look at the 4 main nutrients that thyroid supplements claim to support. SLIDE - Iodine STUDY- http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19014327 Iodine supplements are unnecessary. This is because iodine deficiency is almost never the cause of hypothyroidism in developed countries. SNIPPET: "These findings affirm... adequate iodine nutrition in the general U.S. population since 2000." The big exception to this rule is if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Iodine requirements increase by more than 60% as iodine is required for mother and child. In some instances of Hashimoto’s, concentrated iodine sources such as iodine drops, seaweed or kelp tablets may worsen hypothyroidism. This is another reason to be weary of iodine supplementation. SLIDE - Selenium ME Selenium is a popular thyroid supplement, and theoretically could help if you are actually deficient in selenium. STUDY- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23744563 A review of the research concluded evidence is lacking to definitively support or refute the use of selenium for thyroid health. Some studies found it could help, but they were heavily biased. SNIPPET- "In conclusion, the results of these four studies... show that evidence to support or refute the efficacy of selenium supplementation in people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis is incomplete and not reliable...". In other words, it’s unclear if is beneficial from a scientific standpoint. Patient tesitominal suggests it helps, but that will vary from case to case. Also note the risk of known side-effects, including digestive issues, fatigue, irritability and even hair loss if used long-term. SLIDE - Zinc Speaking of hair loss, it may be worth trialling a zinc supplement on its own (as opposed to a supplement that also contains selenium). STUDY - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19250719 There are few studies on zinc supplementation, with one finding it may only be beneficial for patients with goiter. SNIPPET: "...Zn status and serum thyroid hormone levels were improved in goitrous patients after six months treatment..." Therefore, there is no way to give a solid recommendation for or against its use. SLIDE- Vitamin B12 Vitamin B12 is a micronutrient that helps regulate energy release. Low levels can make you feel exceptionally lethargic, so in theory this supplement could help fight fatigue that often comes with underactive thyroid. Generally speaking it doesn’t hurt to give it a try, and anecdotally they work very well. But much like iodine, low levels of vitamin B12 is very rare in developed countries. Generally speaking then, supplemental iodine and vitamin B12 are not necessary as your levels are very likely optimal. Selenium and zinc supplements are certainly beneficial if you have low levels, but effectiveness will vary greatly between individuals. This provides you the key nutrients to make this transition from glucose to fat burning efficiently. Hi guys, I recently have a question what multivitamins and minerals do I need in a ketogenic diet. Well, the first thing you need to do and a lot of people will use vitamins because they don’t want to consume the amount of vegetables that they really need. You really need to do that because we want to get as many vitamins and minerals from the vegetables as possible, 7 to 10 cups. Not just for the vitamins and minerals but to flush out the fat, we need that greens and healthy vegetables. However, when you are switching from sugar burning to fat burning, when you are adopting, you need more of certain nutrients and you definitely need more B vitamins, vitamin B6, B5, B1 and B12. I recommend getting this in the nutritional yeast, you can get it in powder. I have nutritional yeast in tablet form to make it easier to consume and this is a non-fortified. When you consume nutritional yeast, you don’t want to fortify or enrich it with synthetic vitamins but I also added some natural B12. You also need minerals specifically potassium, magnesium and sodium. When you are in a low carb diet you need more salt, consume about 1teaspoon of salt. If you are in a high carbohydrate diet only have a quarter teaspoon of salt. We do need a lot of potassium and a good amount of magnesium. I use electrolyte powder because it has a thousand mg of potassium citrate, good amount of magnesium and has a little bit of sodium. You may need to enhance sodium because this is not have a lot of sodium but this is cool because it doesn’t have a lot of maltodextrin, it doesn’t have the sugar and it has the trace minerals on it as well. You also need vitamin D3, you can get this on sunlight or fish oils, in that way you can kill two birds in one stone and you can get you omega 3. If you can get high quality cod liver oil, you can get D3 and Omega 3. And you have trace minerals which are those minerals are needed in much smaller amounts, and it is hard to find that in the diet and it can really help you. An example would be chromium, iodine, selenium. Again, the goal is to get as much of the vitamins and minerals from the food but I also recommend enhancing it with B vitamins, minerals, D3, Omega 3 and trace minerals.
