New study: Substance in rhubarb cuts cancer cell growth in half. Parietin is an orange pigment found in many forms of lichen and also in the tart vegetable rhubarb. Parietin helps these plants absorb blue light from the sun and protects them from UV light. But, here’s the exciting news. (below) A comprehensive study last fall also found that parietin in rhubarb may be a potent cancer fighter by prohibiting the expression of an enzyme vital to cancer cell growth. Another great reason to eat your vegetables In in vitro investigations, researchers at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia discovered that parietin killed half of the leukemia cells in a study culture within 48 hours. In their October, 2015 report published in the journal Nature, Emory researchers also discovered that, in mouse models, a more potent derivative of this powerful pigment (called S3) cut the growth of lung cancer cells by a factor of three over the course of 11 days. While obviously lethal to cancer cells, parietin in both dose amounts left healthy cells alone. The same results were seen in cultures of head and neck tumors. Parietin works by stopping the production of the 6PGD (6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase) enzyme, one of the drivers for cancer growth. According to Professor Jing Chen of the Winship Cancer Institute- Emory School of Medicine and one of the authors of the report, cancer cells require a certain amount of 6PDGD to grow. Once that amount falls below a certain level, cancer growth will decrease as well. “This is part of the Warburg effect, the distortion of cancer cells’ metabolism,” Chen said in a recent press release about the study. The power of nutrition: Starving cancer cells with an extract from rhubarb The “Warburg Effect,” named after Nobel laureate Otto Heinrich Warburg, explains how cancer cells get their energy. Warburg was the first scientist to observe that cancer cells obtain fuel anaerobically by glycolysis (followed by fermentation) rather than aerobically, using oxygen like healthy cells do. In fact, Warburg hypothesized that it is this very change in the metabolism of cells that is the fundamental cause of cancer mutation. Parietin very effectively stops a key enzymatic process within the cancer metabolic chain, leading to cell starvation and death. Every year in the United Kingdom, 200,000 people are diagnosed with cancer and 152,500 people die.1 In the United States, the annual death rate for this disease is approximately 547,000.2 These deaths are recorded as cancer deaths, but how many of these deaths are really attributable to the disease itself? How many deaths should in fact be recorded as "death by doctoring"? When we consider that conventional treatment consists almost entirely of radiation, chemotherapy and the long-term application of toxic pharmaceuticals— treatments which are all well known for their life-threatening side-effects— then the question becomes all the more legitimate. On chemotherapy, for instance, note the following: "Most cancer patients in this country die of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy does not eliminate breast, colon, or lung cancers. What does his story tell us? John was known for his critical attitude towards many of the more popular alternative therapies. We look at some aspects of the alternative approach and ask if his criticisms were entirely undeserved. We hear from those within the cancer establishment itself who cite the conventional cut, burn and dissolve techniques as ugly and inhumane, and from those who seriously question the amounts of money being invested in conventional cancer today, given the pitifully low recovery rate. In the UK alone, £2.8 billion a year is spent in the conventional cancer emporium. That's roughly £6,800,000 a day. US spending on cancer is 10 times higher. Since 1974 studies have shown that cannabis has anti-tumor effects. The results of the 1974 study, reported in an Aug. 18, 1974, Washington Post newspaper feature, were that cannabis's component, THC, "slowed the growth of lung cancers, breast cancers and a virus-induced leukemia in laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent." In 1975 an article in the Journal of the National cancer institute titled "Antineoplastic Activity of Cannabinoids," they reported that "Lewis lung adenocarcinoma growth was retarded by the oral administration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinol (CBD). Mice treated for 20 consecutive days with THC and CBD had reduced primary tumor size." In 1998, a research team at Madrid's Complutense University Led by Dr. Manuel Guzman discovered that THC can selectively induce programmed cell death in brain tumor cells without negatively impacting surrounding healthy cells. They reported in the March 2002 issue of "Nature Medicine" they had destroyed incurable brain cancer tumors in rats by injecting them with THC. And in 2007 even Harvard Researchers found that compounds in cannabis cut the growth of lung cancer. There is also an organization called The SETH Group that showed compounds in cannabis can stop the growth of human glioblastoma multiforma (GBM) brain cancer cells. The SETH Group says "No chemotherapy can match this nontoxic anti-cancer action." Video abstract of review paper "Recent perspectives on the anticancer properties of aqueous extracts of Nigerian Vernonia amygdalina" published in the open access journal Botanics: Targets and Therapy by Carolyn Bingham Howard, William K Johnson, Shehla Pervin, et al. Abstract: Innovative developments are necessary for treating and defeating cancer, an oftentimes deadly group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Breast cancer (BC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths of women in the USA, and prostate cancer (PC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths of American men. Although some efficacious BC drugs are pharmaceutically marketed, they affect the quality of life for some patients because they are toxic in that their usages have been accompanied by side effects such as stroke, thrombosis, slow heart rate, seizure, increased blood pressure, nausea, emesis, and more. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the discovery of molecular markers for early detection of this disease and discovery of targets for the development of novel, less toxic therapeutics. A botanical plant Vernonia amygdalina has been widely used in Nigerian and other Central and West African cultures for centuries as an herbal medicine. Mounting evidence suggests that treatment with low concentrations of aqueous leaf extracts of the edible Nigerian V. amygdalina plant (Niger-VA) arrests the proliferative activities and induces apoptosis in estrogen receptor-positive, estrogen receptor-negative, and triple-negative human breast cancerous cells and in androgen-independent human PC-3. Also, in athymic mice, Niger-VA potentiates increased efficacies and optimizes treatment outcomes when given as a cotreatment with conventional chemotherapy drugs. Evidence of its noticeable cytostatic activities ranging from changes in DNA synthesis to growth inhibition, mechanisms of inducing apoptosis in different cancer cell lines, and in vivo antitumorigenic activities and chemopreventive efficacy reinforce the idea that Niger-VA deserves increased attention for further development as a phytoceutical, anticancer drug entity. Hence, the present review article highlights impactful published literature on the anticancer effects of Niger-VA in multiple cancerous cell lines and in a nude mouse model, supporting its potential usefulness as a natural product, chemotherapeutic medicine for treatment of both BC and PC. The Rhodanese breaks the Hydrogen Cyanide and Benzaldehyde down into 2 by-products, Thiocyanate and Benzoic acid which are beneficial in nourishing healthy cells and forms the metabolic pool production for vitamin B12. Any excess of these by-products is expelled in normal fashion from the body via urine. Apple Seeds and Cancer: What the Government Has Been Hiding From You for Years The mere mention of consuming apple seeds, cherry pits, apricot seeds, or bitter almonds tends to cause almost panic attacks or angry reactions in some. Why? Cyanide is in them. So they’re justified in freaking out, right? As a rumor based on too little knowledge, their concern is understandable. All you have to do is Google cyanide alongside any of the foods mentioned above and you’ll get a plethora of articles that all support the cyanide dangers from those seeds and nuts. Some say that your body quickly detoxes the compounds containing cyanide. Others say that you will get free cyanide when your body metabolizes those compounds. Most concede that it would take a heck of a lot of pits, seeds, or bitter almonds to poison you. But as the saying goes, “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” In this case the fear of fruit seeds and bitter almonds and other nuts is based on incomplete data. The compound containing cyanide is amygdalin. The complete amygdalin story for full knowledge Thousands have used apricot seed kernels to eliminate cancer. They didn’t die from cyanide poisoning. They were cured without negative side effects. This wasn’t accomplished by consuming a couple every week, but dozens daily for months. (Sydney Herald) So why weren’t they weren’t poisoned? The amygdalin compound has four molecules. Two are glucose molecules. The other two are cyanide and benzaldyhide. The last two are scarycompounds, except for a couple of unusual metabolic activities: they are released by and into cancer cells only. Otherwise, they remain in the amygdalin compound and are passed through. It’s a very clever arrangement. The cancer cells depend on fermenting sugar (glucose) for their energy instead of oxygen. So the cancer cells attract the amygdalin compounds for their glucose, but are whacked when they metabolize those compounds that free the benzalldyhide and cyanide. The glucose is the sugar bait. Cancer cells contain an enzyme that is not found in healthy cells, beta-glucosidase. The beta-glucosidase enzyme “unlocks” the amygdalin compound, releasing the deadly toxins within the cancer cell. Only cancer cells metabolize amygdalin. Healthy normal cells don’t. Most non-cancerous cells contain another enzyme, rhodanese. Free cyanide molecules are bound to sulfur molecules by rhodanese, creating harmless cyanates that are eliminated in the urine. This is the little bit of knowledge that those “scary” articles reference when they say a little bit of cyanide is easily detoxed by your body. But the complete function of amygdalin is hidden because the fact that laetrile or B17, a concentrated extract from apricot amydgalins, can cure cancer is taboo. Supressing a #safecancercure Laetrile or B17, was developed by San Francisco researcher Dr. Ernst Krebb in 1952 by liquefying and purifying amygdalin from apricot seeds so it could be injected into cancer patients. Dr. Krebb injected himself to assure laetrile’s safety, and Dr. John Richardson proved its efficacy by curing several cancer patients in San Francisco with laetrile. In 1971, laetrile was banned. Dr. Richardson called on investigative journalist G. Edward Griffin to publicize the merits of laetrile or B17 derived from apricot seeds. Griffin discovered that the Sloane-Kettering Institute’s laetrile trials leading to the FDA ban were bogus. Sloane-Kettering spokesperson Dr. Ralph Moss refused to lie about laetrile and left Sloane-Kettering in disgust. He slipped Griffin unpublicized papers scientifically proving laetrile actually worked. Clinical studies done in the 1970s and 1980s, including those sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, indicated that Laetrile didn’t reduce malignant tumors’ size or growth, but some patients experienced cyanide poisoning. Today, I’d like to talk with you about how to help manage symptoms associated with treatment, specifically with chemotherapy. During chemotherapy treatment, it’s very common for patients to not really feel like eating, or for appetite to be low, or the taste of food to be off. In addition there are often many other symptoms that can impact your overall wellness and ability to keep yourself well-nourished through a healthy diet. Things like fatigue are very common, bowel changes, like constipation or diarrhea, mouth sores, and nausea. There are so many tips and tricks, and easy, simple ways that you can go about keeping your body healthy, your immune system supported during your treatment, even in the face of all of these symptoms. When it comes to taste changes, if food doesn’t taste good, it’s very hard for it be desirable to eat. One of the ways to help make food taste better is to think about some different flavors. Often times tart, or more sour flavors, things like a pomegranate, ginger, lemon, apples—those can help manage some of that off, or undetectable taste. Now, if you’re experiencing mouth sores, tart flavors can sometimes burn, so you would want to consider something a little more soothing. Think of the texture and flavor, say, of a baked sweet potato. Health Benefits of Vegetable Extracts. Vegetable extracts present in broccoli, celery, parsley, kale, Brussels sprouts, and many others—have long been revered for their health-promoting benefits. It is now recognized that four compounds, apigenin, I3C, DIM, and BITC, are responsible for the majority of that protection, and in very specific and complementary ways. All four have powerful cancer-protective effects, attacking and preventing malignancies through a multitude of overlapping mechanisms. Apigenin also has exceptional cardiovascular, metabolic, and neuroprotective properties, while I3C/DIM promote cardiovascular and liver health. Consumption of these plant compounds provides broad-spectrum protection against many of the most common symptoms of aging. Cruciferous Vegetables and Cancer Prevention Why are cancer researchers studying cruciferous vegetables? Cruciferous vegetables are rich in nutrients, including several carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin); vitamins C, E, and K; folate; and minerals. They also are a good fiber source. In addition, cruciferous vegetables contain a group of substances known as glucosinolates, which are sulfur-containing chemicals. These chemicals are responsible for the pungent aroma and bitter flavor of cruciferous vegetables. During food preparation, chewing, and digestion, the glucosinolates in cruciferous vegetables are broken down to form biologically active compounds such as indoles, nitriles, thiocyanates, and isothiocyanates (1). Indole-3-carbinol (an indole) and sulforaphane (an isothiocyanate) have been most frequently examined for their anticancer effects. Indoles and isothiocyanates have been found to inhibit the development of cancer in several organs in rats and mice, including the bladder, breast, colon, liver, lung, and stomach (2, 3). Studies in animals and experiments with cells grown in the laboratory have identified several potential ways in which these compounds may help prevent cancer: They help protect cells from DNA damage. They help inactivate carcinogens. They have antiviral and antibacterial effects. They have anti-inflammatory effects. They induce cell death (apoptosis). They inhibit tumor blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) and tumor cell migration (needed for metastasis). Studies in humans, however, have shown mixed results. Is there evidence that cruciferous vegetables can help reduce cancer risk in people? Researchers have investigated possible associations between intake of cruciferous vegetables and the risk of cancer. The evidence has been reviewed by various experts. Key studies regarding four common forms of cancer are described briefly below. Prostate cancer: Cohort studies in the Netherlands (4), United States (5), and Europe (6) have examined a wide range of daily cruciferous vegetable intakes and found little or no association with prostate cancer risk. However, some case-control studies have found that people who ate greater amounts of cruciferous vegetables had a lower risk of prostate cancer (7, 8). Colorectal cancer: Cohort studies in the United States and the Netherlands have generally found no association between cruciferous vegetable intake and colorectal cancer risk (9-11). The exception is one study in the Netherlands—the Netherlands Cohort Study on Diet and Cancer—in which women (but not men) who had a high intake of cruciferous vegetables had a reduced risk of colon (but not rectal) cancer (12). Lung cancer: Cohort studies in Europe, the Netherlands, and the United States have had varying results (13-15). Most studies have reported little association, but one U.S. analysis—using data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals’ Follow-up Study—showed that women who ate more than 5 servings of cruciferous vegetables per week had a lower risk of lung cancer (16). Breast cancer: One case-control study found that women who ate greater amounts of cruciferous vegetables had a lower risk of breast cancer (17). Dietary intake of these compounds has been shown to counter breast, lung, colorectal, head and neck, and prostate cancers.3-7 Watercress is also an exceptionally rich dietary source of nasturtiin, the precursor of phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC).10 This compound inhibits the liver's phase I enzymes, which are responsible for activating many carcinogens in animals, and induces the liver's phase II enzymes, which are associated with enhanced excretion of carcinogens. When human prostate cancer cells were exposed to PEITC, both proliferation (multiplication of cells) and tumorigenesis (production of tumors) were inhibited. This compound also triggered apoptosis, or the death of cancerous cells.11 image Similarly, crude watercress extract was "significantly protective" against three stages of the carcinogenic process in human colon cancer cells. The stages investigated were initiation, proliferation, and metastasis (spread of cancer).12 Isothiocyanate compounds from watercress and broccoli were found to hinder the activity of matrix metalloproteinase-9, an enzyme that plays a role in progression of certain cancers by breaking down natural barriers in the body that impede the expansion of existing tumors. These watercress and broccoli-derived compounds were also shown to suppress a highly invasive breast cancer cell line.13

Parsley provides nature’s best carotenoids and is a nutrition powerhouse of a few known anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients and flavonoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, apiole, rutin and apigenin).This tiny-leaf plant is rich with chlorophyll, vitamin A, B, C, and K, folate and iron. It has high beneficial mineral contents like calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, vanadium, and zinc!!! HOLY COW!!! Nibbling on a sprig or two parsley would not give you any real improvement in your health. The best way to enjoy all the health benefits of this wonder herb is by taking its juice. One or two ounces a day regularly would do wonders, but don’t overdo! Anemia: The high chlorophyll content from parsley is an excellent blood purifier and builder. The vitamin C and iron content makes iron absorption more effective. Regularly drinking parsley juice (extracted using a gear juicer) helps bring up the hemoglobin count. Atherosclerosis: Consume parsley regularly for its vitamin C to prevent hardening of the arteries. It also helps to dissolve the sticky substances and maintain the elasticity of the blood vessels. Arthritis: The rich vitamin C from parley helps protect against inflammatory problems like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Bad breath (halitosis): Bad breath is usually a sign of a toxic colon. If the condition is not yet too far advanced, the purifying and cleansing effect of parsley juice makes a good remedy to clean up the toxic environment. Bladder/kidney/urinary tract problems: Two healing compounds in parsley, myristicin and apiole, help increase urine flow that removes infection-causing bacteria from the urinary tract. At the same time, it also detoxify the toxins from the body through urination. The diuretic effect helps prevent kidney stones and various urinary tract problems. Bloatedness, water retention: Nibbling/chewing on parsley in the days before menstruation can help increase urination and eliminating excess fluid that cause bloatedness or water retention. Cancer: Its high concentration of anti-oxidants such as monoterpenes, phthalides, polyacetylenes, help neutralize carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) like tobacco smoke. Also good remedy for lung infection or asthma. Free radicals: Free radicals (cancer-causing compounds) are abundance in deep fried foods. Ingesting parsley will reduce the free radical damage done to our body cells as the anti-oxidants neutralize the free radicals. Hair growth: Liquefy a big bunch of parsley into two tablespoonful of puree. Apply on wet scalp, put on the shower cap and let it sit for about an hour. Rinse and shampoo. Taking the juice at the same time, may also help the growth of long and healthy hair. Heart health: Folate in parsley is a superb nutrient for cardiovascular health. Specifically, it helps protect blood vessels and reduces the risks of heart attack, by converting potentially dangerous homocysteine into harmless molecules. Immunity booster: The high vitamin C content (higher than oranges) and the multi immune-enhancing compounds in parsley make it an extraordinary immunity booster. Menstruation disorders: The presence of apiole oil in parsley, which is a constituent of female sex hormones estrogen, makes it effective in regulating monthly periods. Vision health: The high carotenoids (precursor of A vitamin) in parsley makes it a particularly healing food for vision health. Add a big bunch of parsley as a juice ingredient daily to see the results. Wound healing: The excellent source of histidine in parsley is the essential amino acid necessary for growth and repair of tissues. Parsley juice would do well for people healing from a wound or after a surgery. HOLY COW!!! WE all need to be not just eating this in salads, but we NEED to start JUICING it right away!!! Never juice it straight as this is to detoxifying, juice it with an organic apple, carrots, and a full lemon!!! Only juice about one ounce of this daily, as this is all that is needed.
