👇 materials & links below! 👇 What do you call something that is a coat rack, magnetic key ring holder, entryway organizer, mail storage, floating shelf… thing? We don’t know either. But we made it and so can you! NOTE: if you want to hang anything heavy on this you should mount it with something heavier duty like french cleats or keyhole hangers. You could also route keyholes right into the wood with a slotted router bit. We love that so many different types of storage are built into this piece - hooks, shelves, and key magnets. We also like that we were able to make it with a pretty limited amount of tools and inexpensive lumber. Something like this could also be used as a display shelf in a kids room (trophies on top, coats and backpack on bottom). I think it would be interesting to add lips on the left and right side of the mail holder as well to turn that spot into a catch all. Also, we love the hooks we bought for this! They were SO much cheaper than most traditional coat hooks we found, they're simple and modern, and they're big enough to double up with coats.

I made a floating coat rack/cubby using a french cleat, from baltic birch plywood. I cut down three pieces at 5" wide for the shelf section. Using those pieces as a guide, I set a stop block. Then I cut two matching width pieces for the end caps of the cubby. Then I set a stop block to cut off 1 1/2" from the piece that would become the back panel. This is to help it fit inside the cubby. I dry fit the pieces in place to test. I marked along the bottom of the cubby so I wouldn't cut below that line. Then I cut out a large section that was behind the cubby. I set my table saw blade to 45 degrees. Then, using the cutout from above, I split it approximately in half. One of these pieces got trimmed down to 20" long, to become the wall cleat. The shorter length is to allow the shelf to slide back and forth on it. I dry fit everything again and marked all joints with a line for adding biscuits. I also set the remaining cleat on the underside of the top panel, and marked for biscuits. Using a biscuit jointer, I added slots on all necessary pieces. Marking all of the pieces ahead help make sure the biscuit slots line up. I added glue to all of the slots and joint faces, then added biscuits into the slots. All of the biscuit jointed panels were clamped together to dry. The angle on the cleat made it hard to clamp, so I just glued it in place. For biscuit jointing, you just have to line of the mark that you made, which should cross the joint. The now cut out back panel got glued and screwed onto the back of the box. With it flipped over, I added glue to the inside back surfaces. Then I pushed in the back panel as far in as it would go. I added some deep throat clamps to force the panel against the back to dry. Using blue tape, I masked off the bottom front panel. Also, I masked off the front faces of the cubby, trimming it to the edge with a sharp knife. Using a 7 oz. color sample, I painted the front facing panel. I also painted the inside of the cubby, covering all of it with two coats. After it dried, I removed the tape and scraped away any paint that seeped under the tape, with a utility knife. I covered the entire piece with two coats of PolyCrylic. On the front panel, I marked the center point, then the center point of each end (splitting the face into quarters). Then I laid out the coat hangers centered on my marks. I predrilled the two holes on each hanger, so the screw wouldn't drift when being screwed in. Then all three hooks were screwed in place. I predrilled three holes in the wall cleat, one in the center, two at 8" from the center mark. I screwed the cleat to the wall via the center hole, then leveled the cleat. Holding it level, I added the two remaining screws. Finally the shelf was hung onto the cleat, and adjusted laterally for placement. Second channel: bit.ly/iltms-2

This tutorial will show you how to build a modern coat rack. This modern coat rack design made from Black Walnut wood is both stylish and functional. Whether you're looking for a coat rack in your foyer or mudroom and whether your interior design style is modern farmhouse or craftsman, this coat rack is sure to fit in just fine. I've seen a few versions of this around, most have staggered blocks and a backing piece. I wanted to find a way to do without the backing piece and have the blocks even so the appearance was a solid piece of wood when the rack is not in use. Made from solid Maple and Bibolo. A commissioned project whilst having the freedom to design on the fly, where it’s placement limitations were one of its few given factors. The entryway for which the coat rack is made has some striking purple wallpaper which I have tried to incorporate in the design by choosing not to install back paneling of any kind. The finishing steps might look confusing, here’s an attempt to try and fill you in. As both the Maple and Bibolo get a different base coat but the same top coat I have tried to overcome the need for masking the different species with tape, preventing the spill of a base coat on wood it shouldn’t go, nor having to cut or miter the mouldings after the finish was applied. I did this by using small domino’s helping out with alignment. The Maple receives a transparent, though slightly white pigmented, base coat in order to “preserve” Maples distinctive paleness. Without this prep coat the Maple would yellow due to the topcoat that is used on the total final project. All the Bibolo parts receive a generous base coat of oil before it’s top coat is applied. To whomever cares: Maple base coat Osmo 3041 1X thinly applied Bibilo base coat Osmo 1101 2X generously applied Top Coat Osmo 3064 2X thinly applied

Today I'm making a simple coat rack for a customer. I know you can buy these complete for a fraction of what it costs to make one but the customer wanted a specific size and this way I could make it with hidden fixings. Sods law when I got to site there was something behind the wall for the middle fixing so had to re-drill a new hole behind a different hook. It might have just been a metal stud in the wall but not risking it - easy enough to drill a new hole. I don't have a good place to put my coat when I get home from a long day's work. So it usually ends up on the floor, or the back of a kitchen chair. So I made a wall mounted coat rack at my entry door. Now my family and I have a place to put our jackets, bags, and umbrellas. ///// CONNECT WITH ME \\\\\ Website: http://www.bytravis.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ThingsByTravis Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/bytravis Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/bytravis

We were in dire need of a better place to keep the coats. A closet was out of the question due to the 2 heat registers, a 3rd we no longer use, and a cold air return lining the same wall. My bench I had was buried in several layers of coats and left us with no place to sit to take off our shoes. I love my new coat rack. DIY Pete shows you how to make your own DIY Chalkboard Coat Rack. This project is simple for the beginning woodworker, is cheap to make, and will be a great project to have in your home. Pete attaches the boards using a Kreg Jig and shows all of the steps needed to build your own. For more info, project photos, and downloadable plans check out: http://www.diypete.com/how-to-make-a-chalkboard-coat-rack/ Downloadable Plans: https://gumroad.com/l/diychalkboard Cut the 2 foot by 4 foot chalkboard down to size. The cut piece should be 48 inches wide by 17 inches tall. Cut the 1×4 boards and 1×2 boards down to size. Measurements are shown below and the cut list is toward the top of this post. Please note that a 1×4 board you buy from the store is actually 3/4 of an inch thick by 3 1/2 inches wide. The 1×2 board you buy from the store is actually 3/4 of an inch thick and 1 1/2 inches wide. Layout the pieces to make sure everything is going to fit. Notice that I cut a scrap 1×4 board down to 1 inch wide by 8 inches long to use as a chalk holder. I cut a 15 degree angle on the table saw so the chalk rack slants to hold the chalk. If you don’t have a table saw or aren’t able to cut angles be creative and think of something else that might hold chalk. A drawer cup pull would be a simple solution that you can screw on. Use a Kreg Jig to make pocket holes on the 12 inch long 1×4 and 1×2 boards. Set the Kreg Jig to the thickness of the wood which is 3/4 of an inch. This is what the Kreg Jig holes will look like. Use wood glue and 1 1/4 inch Kreg Jig screws to assemble. Stain or paint the wood. I used a clean rag to wipe on two thin coats of Special Walnut stain from Minwax. Seal the wood with polyurethane. I’ve found that Fast-Drying Polyurethane from Minwax works great for this project. It protects the wood, gives the wood a warm look, and dries super quick. Spray on a couple thin coats. Center the chalkboard on the backside of the frame. Attach using 3/4 inch nails and either an air nailer, Airstrike tool from Ryobi, or a hammer and nails. Attach the chalkboard. The studs in your wall are generally 16 inches apart from each other (16 inches on center). You can pre-drill holes in the chalkboard and then drive 3 inch screws through the chalkboard and into the studs in your wall. Use a stud finder to find each stud prior to putting the screw in the wall. Make sure the chalkboard is level and then drive in the screws. I like to do the center screw first and then do one to the left and one to the right. ---- Looking for more DIY videos? Be sure to check out our channel and subscribe for updates! I couldn't wait to try out my new table saw, and I found this old drawer that I could turn into a coat rack. It was a nice experiment, and it came out pretty good too. Who knew trees could be so useful? I made some coat hooks so easily from a branch of an ash tree. The branch was cut down just the day before, so it was still full of sap – it was still greenwood. You can’t sand or varnish greenwood, so this is going to remain fairly rustic. But it’s only for hanging coats up on our porch. One day I’ll use some drier wood and make some finished ones for the inside of the house. Go on - give it a go yourself : - ) Ok, here are some important website links. Please check them out..
