Twitter @juangangel As with other mammals, domestic sheep reproduction occurs sexually. Their reproductive strategy is very similar to other domestic herd animals. A flock of sheep is generally mated by a single ram, which has either been chosen by a farmer or has established dominance through physical contest with other rams (in feral populations). Most sheep have a breeding season (tupping) in the autumn, though some are able to breed year-round. Largely as a result of the influence of humans in sheep breeding, ewes often produce multiple lambs. This increase in the lamb births, both in number and birth weight, may cause problems in delivery and lamb survival, requiring the intervention of shepherds. Ewes generally reach sexual maturity at six to eight months of age, and rams generally at four to six (ram lambs have occasionally been known to impregnate their mothers at two months). Ewes enter into estrus cycles about every 17 days, which last for approximately 30 hours. In addition to emitting a scent, they indicate readiness through physical displays towards rams. Sheep may display homosexuality, which occurs in about eight percent of rams. Its occurrence does not seem to be related to flock hierarchy (as some homosexual behavior is in mammals), rather the ram's typical motor pattern for intercourse is directed at rams instead of ewes. The phenomenon of the freemartin, a female bovine that is behaviorally masculine and lacks functioning ovaries, is commonly associated with cattle, but does occur to some extent in sheep. The instance of freemartins in sheep may be increasing in concert with the rise in twinning (freemartins are the result of male-female twin combinations). Rutting Without human intervention, rams may fight during the rut to determine which individuals may mate with ewes. Rams, especially unfamiliar ones, will also fight outside the breeding period to establish dominance; rams can kill one another if allowed to mix freely. During the rut, even normally friendly rams may become aggressive towards humans due to increases in their hormone levels. A pregnant St Croix ewe Historically, especially aggressive rams were sometimes blindfolded or hobbled. Today, those who keep rams typically prefer softer preventative measures, such as moving within a clear line to an exit, never turning their back on a ram, and possibly dousing with water or a diluted solution of bleach or vinegar to dissuade charges More info at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_sheep_reproduction Juan Gonzalo Angel www.tvagro.tv

In this webinar, Philip Berg will discuss ways to reduce labor at lambing time so sheep producers can spend more time monitoring newborn lambs. Reducing labor at lambing can also assist sheep producers to manage larger numbers of ewes with the same amount of labor. Philip Berg is an instructor in the Pipestone Lamb & Wool Program at Minnesota West Community and Technical College. Philip was born and raised on a Pipestone area sheep farm and continues to work with his family’s sheep operation. After receiving his masters degree, he worked for North Dakota State University at the Hettinger Research and Extension Center for six years doing sheep research work prior to returning to Pipestone where he worked as an extension agriculture educator for eleven years. Philip is highly respected for his outstanding work as an educator and has completed five on-line sheep management courses for those who find it difficult to attend onsite programs.

In April 2017, PETA US observers visited a massive sheep-shearing operation near Jericho, Utah, where thousands of sheep from a Patagonia-approved wool producer—Red Pine Land & Livestock, LLC—which is listed on Patagonia's website as an approved supplier, are sheared each year. They found that Patagonia's own standards were being violated. See for yourself, learn more, and then take action to help sheep now.

Sheep Breaks World Record with 40 kgs of Wool. The merino sheep was found avoiding a haircut near the Australian capital of Canberra, and according to the BBC animal welfare officers are concerned for its wellbeing due to the amount of wool it is carrying. They say he is four or five times the normal size of a sheep and in a state of stress as he has probably been living in isolation. "It's definitely one of the biggest sheep we've ever seen," Tammy Ven Dange, head of the RSPCA in the Australian Capital Territory, told AFP. The final wool weight was revealed to be 40.45 kilograms (88 pounds). The amount smashes the previous world record held by New Zealand's Big Ben, who had 28.9 (63.7 pounds) kilograms removed, according to the Canberra Times.

English/Nat British sheep farmers fear they will bear the brunt of the export ban on British livestock imposed by the European Union in an effort to contain foot and mouth disease in cloven-footed animals. The highly infectious virus was identified in 27 pigs in a English abattoir on Monday, at Little Warley in Essex, northeast of London. The exclusion area around the abattoir was expanded to 10 miles and controls set up around five farms, from Yorkshire in the north of England to the Isle of Wight off the southern coast, that supplied pigs to the slaughterhouse. Foot and Mouth disease affects cloven-footed animals, which includes sheep, goats, pigs and cows. It is not usually fatal but can cause weight loss and reduced dairy production in cattle. It can spread quickly through the air. At Northampton livestock market on Thursday, people working in the industry said sheep farmers would be most badly hit by the EU export ban. Britain exports few pig products and exports of cattle have not yet recovered from the BSE crisis. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I don't see that price of cattle and pigs being affected too much - it will be the prime lambs , they will be affected most because of the export ban" SUPER CAPTION: Mike Carter, Pig and Sheep Auctioneer The EU said it would review its ban at a February 27 meeting of the Standing Veterinary Committee. Meanwhile farmers and dealers are in limbo until a decision to lift the ban is made. SOUNDBITE: (English) "At the moment people won't order anything because they don't know whether they will want lambs or not, we have got half of our lambs waiting to be exported, dead really, and there's just not trade for them. People won't commit to ordering lambs until they know if the export ban is going to be lifted." SUPER CAPTION: Craig Griffiths, Sheep Farmer and Dealer The disease is just the latest crisis to hit Britain's farming community, still shell-shocked from the BSE crisis. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, or mad cow disease, as it is commonly known, is the suspected cause of the fatal variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. That outbreak reached epidemic proportions in Britain after it was diagnosed in 1986 and led to wholesale herd slaughtering, mandatory testing and an EU ban on British beef exports that has since been lifted. Luke Stacey has a sheep and cattle farm in Buckinghamshire, that lies within the exclusion zone around one of the farms where the infection is believed to have started. SOUNDBITE: (English) "People have just given up really. It's been one thing after another, all come from outside farming and there's nothing we can do about it. People are just resigned to fact that there seems to be crisis after crisis." SUPER CAPTION: Luke Stacey, Cattle and Sheep Farmer The last foot and mouth outbreak in Britain occurred in 1981. An outbreak in 1967 led to the slaughter of more than 400,000 animals. Subscribe to Munchies here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-MUNCHIES In this episode of The Politics of Food, Ben Ferguson investigates the UK’s growing illegal trade in "smokies,” a West African delicacy that has been outlawed in Europe since 1987. Journeying through an underground economy that operates between rural Welsh farmers and urban African communities, he uncovers how black market traders are risking prison to buy and sell blowtorched sheep carcasses. Ben also meets the sheep farmers and families who are fighting to change the law, as well as the scientists who warn that smokies can kill. At the center of this whole debate is Carmello Gale, a black market gang boss—or a food freedom fighter, depending on who you talk to. On the face of it, this trade is a remarkable clash of traditions, and one that paints an accurate picture of modern Britain. As the smokie trail winds its way through rural livestock markets to the homes of African expats, we see how the politics of food is shaping our laws and—as some believe—criminalizing certain cultures. This webinar will look more closely at forages in determining if they can meet essential nutrient requirements of sheep at different productive stages. Fiber content of a forage is a function of plant maturity and can potentially limit intake resulting in inadequate energy or protein intake. Forage mineral content is a complex interaction between plant, soil conditions and fertilization practices and that may result in inappropriate mineral content predisposing to disease conditions. The true wild card of forages is mineral content. Trace minerals are essential nutrients influencing productivity and immune response. Most forages are deficient in a number of critical trace minerals as well as having high concentrations of interfering minerals resulting in deficiency or toxicity conditions. The goal of the webinar is to provide the participant with a better perspective on how their forage may limit or promote their feeding program and the potential role for dietary supplements.

This cost includes mortalities and production losses (reduced wool cut, stained wool, lowered staple strength), as well as the direct costs of control (mainly drenches and labour) ,Types of Internal Parasites 4 main groups Nematodes (roundworms) Trematodes (fluke) Cestodes (tapeworms) Protozoans (coccidia) ,Nematodes commonly known as round worms eg: Haemonchus spp. (Barber’s Pole worm) Ostertagia circumcincta (Small Brown Stomach worm) Trichostrongylus spp (Black Scour worm). by far the most economically important group of internal parasites ,Life cycles…. Nematodes Most common internal parasite of domestic livestock Naturally carry low worm burdens Animals need to be exposed to develop resistance Become a problem when numbers increase to cause production losses and or animal have other diseases ,Life cycle… Nematodes cont… ,Barber’s Pole Worm quite large worm (20 to 30mm) found in the abomasum. Adult females have a characteristic barbers pole appearance like red and white twisted wire. The male is smaller (around 15mm) sucks blood from the lining of the stomach which causes anaemia. adults suck around 0.05ml of blood per worm. A burden of 1000 worms may remove 50ml of blood (egg count would be around 5000epg) Sign of heavy infection include lack stamina, pale gums and conjunctiva, bottle-jaw, constipation. faecal worm egg counts are usually high before symptoms show (could be over 10,000 epg). a subclinical (no visible signs of worms) infestation can reduce weight gains by 30%, wool growth by 10% and milk production by 30%. Information sourced from Wormboss .com.au ,Brown Stomach worm occurs in most sheep areas of Australia and is a major parasite in winter rainfall districts. small (10mm) red-brown worm just visible on the lining of the abomasum. very resilient, can survive freezing on the pasture and dry conditions. adults can arrested or inhibited for varying lengths of time Adult female brown stomach worms lay 50 - 100 eggs per day. damage the lining of the stomach as they mature from larvae to adult worms. heavy infections cause rapid loose of condition, profuse scours occasionally death. animals with fewer worms are unthrifty and daggy. Mixed infections of brown stomach worm and black scour worm are more lethal than infection with only one of the worms. Infection caused whitish nodules on the abomasum lining. production-loss occurs in the absence of obvious disease. a subclinical infestation can reduce weight gains by 35%, wool growth by 20% and milk production by 20%. Information sourced from Wormboss .com.au ,Black scour worm Black scour worms occur in all sheep production districts of Australia. Adult female black scour worms lay 100 – 200 eggs per day. Black scour worms live in the first three metres of the small intestine of the sheep and cause damage to the lining of the gut. the larvae burrow into the wall of the small intestine and undergo a moult to become an immature worm. heavy infections cause rapid lose condition, scours, which may be black. The animal can dehydrate and may die. A subclinical infestation can reduce weight gains by 35%, wool growth by 10% and milk production by 20%. Damage to the intestinal wall leads to problems with nutrient absorbtion. Information sourced from Wormboss .com.au ,Trematodes include Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) and Paramphistomes (stomach fluke). The most economically important fluke for livestock is liver fluke. For more on gluten sensitivity: http://draxe.com/gluten-sensitivity-diet/?utm_campaign=Youtube-Sept-2014&utm_medium=social&utm_source=youtube&utm_term=gluten In this video, I’m going to talk about what gluten sensitivity is, symptoms, and side effects. A few of the warning signs that indicate you are gluten sensitive are digestive issues, food allergies, autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, weight gain, joint pain, arthritis, brain inflammation, ADHD, autism, hypothyroidism, or hormone imbalance. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye that has been hybridized today, resulting in a new breed of gluten. This protein gets into your gut and causes intestinal inflammation, resulting in autoimmune disease and other problems. If you're gluten sensitive and are going gluten free, you can follow the GAPS diet, which supports your digestive system. In addition, taking supplements like L- Glutamine, digestive enzymes, and probiotics will help your body heal from gluten sensitivity. Following these tips you will notice an overall improvement in your gluten sensitivity symptoms! Alaskan Dall Sheep near Caribou Creek, Alaska on the mountainside in May 2013. Dall sheep (Ovis dalli) are one of two species of all-white, hoofed large mammals found in Alaska. They are stocky, with amber horns, yellow eyes, and black noses and feet. Only in very few places in Alaska (i.e., Southcentral) does their geographic range overlap with that of the other all-white species, the mountain goat. However, sheep prefer drier habitats than those used by goats. Like goat hunting, sheep hunting tends to be practiced primarily by a few, hardy individuals whose interest is more in the challenge and satisfaction of mountain hunting and the alpine experience than in getting food for the freezer. Dall sheep produce excellent meat but they are relatively small in size and the effort required to retrieve meat from the rugged alpine areas they inhabit can be daunting. Male sheep, or rams, usually weigh less than 300 lbs (136 kg), and females (ewes) weigh less than 150 lbs (68 kg). The dressed weight of a 230-lb sheep is about 140 lbs (64 kg), and a sheep that size will yield about 80 lbs (36 kg) of meat. Recreational hunting is typically limited to the taking of mature rams during August and September. Nonresident sheep hunters are required to have a guide or be accompanied by relative who is an Alaska resident. Alaska's Dall sheep are popular with nonresident hunters, and the harvest is split fairly evenly between residents and nonresidents. In 2007, for example, nonresidents took 403 sheep, while resident hunters took 513, or about 57 percent. Rams are distinguished by their massive curling horns. Ewes have shorter, more slender, slightly curved horns. Rams resemble ewes in appearance until they are about 3 years old. After that, continued horn growth makes males easily recognizable. As rams mature, their horns form a circle when seen from the side. Ram horns reach half a circle in about two or three years, three-quarters of a circle in four to five years, and a full circle or "curl" in seven to eight years. In most cases, hunters are restricted to taking only full-curl rams. Sheep have well-developed social systems. Adult rams live in bands which seldom associate with ewe groups except during the mating season in late November and early December. The horn clashing for which rams are so well known does not result from fights over possession of ewes. Instead, it is a means of establishing the social order. These clashes occur throughout the year (among females, as well) on an occasional basis. Dall sheep inhabit the mountain ranges of Alaska. Dall sheep are found in relatively dry country and they frequent a special combination of open alpine ridges, meadows, and steep slopes with extremely rugged "escape terrain" in the immediate vicinity. They use the ridges, meadows, and steep slopes for feeding and resting. When danger approaches they flee to the rocks and crags to elude pursuers. They are generally high country animals but sometimes occur in rocky gorges below timberline in Alaska. They do not occur in the southeastern portion of the state. The diets of Dall sheep vary seasonally from range to range. During summer, food is abundant, and the sheep consume a wide variety of plants. Their winter diet is much more limited and consists primarily of dry, frozen grass and sedge stems available when snow is blown off the winter ranges. Some populations eat significant amounts of lichen and moss during winter. Many Dall sheep populations visit mineral licks during the spring.

Scientists have created an "artificial womb" in the hopes of someday using the device to save babies born extremely prematurely. So far the device has only been tested on fetal lambs. A study involving eight animals found the device appears effective at enabling very premature fetuses to develop normally for about a month. The device consists of a clear plastic bag filled with synthetic amniotic fluid. A machine outside the bag is attached to the umbilical cord to function like a placenta, providing nutrition and oxygen to the blood and removing carbon dioxide. The device in the fetal lamb experiment is kept in a dark, warm room where researchers can play the sounds of the mother's heart for the lamb fetus and monitor the fetus with ultrasounds. Previous research has shown that lamb fetuses are good models for human fetal development.

All Grass Wintering (AGW) is a sheep feeding system based on cell grazing grass – managing sheep at high stocking densities and moving them frequently through electric fenced paddocks. The pinch point for most sheep systems is winter, as grass growth is low or zero and alternative feed choices are expensive. However, if managed well, grazed grass can supply all the needs of pregnant ewes during this time. Through measuring grass and estimating ewe demand, feed can be allocated accurately. Regular body condition scoring, accompanied by observations of how the stock are behaving, is essential to determine whether feed allocations are enough. Careful forward planning and rationing can offer potential savings of £15/ewe per winter. Yogurt, yoghurt, or yoghourt (/ˈjoʊɡərt/ or /ˈjɒɡət/; from Turkish: yoğurt; other spellings listed below) is a food produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. The bacteria used to make yogurt are known as "yogurt cultures". Fermentation of lactose by these bacteria produces lactic acid, which acts on milk protein to give yogurt its texture and characteristic tang. Worldwide, cow's milk, the protein of which is mainly casein, is most commonly used to make yogurt. Milk from water buffalo, goats, ewes, mares, camels, and yaks, however, is also used to produce yogurt in various parts of the world. Yogurt is nutritionally rich in protein, calcium, riboflavin, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. It has nutritional benefits beyond those of milk, namely due to its probiotics. Lactose-intolerant individuals may tolerate yogurt better than other dairy products due to the conversion of lactose to the sugars glucose and galactose, and the fermentation of lactose to lactic acid carried out by the bacteria present in the yogurt. Yogurt contains varying amounts of fat. For example, some cows'-milk yogurts contain no fat; others of low fat content have 2% fat, whole-milk yogurt may have 4% fat; some yogurts sold as "Greek-style" may have about 10% fat. Yogurt has been claimed to have many health benefits. There is moderate-quality evidence to support the idea that consumption of dairy products, including yogurt, may reduce the risk of high blood pressure. However, the precise mechanism for this effect is not fully understood. To offset its natural sourness, yogurt is also sold sweetened, flavored or in containers with fruit or fruit jam on the bottom. The two styles of yogurt commonly found in the grocery store are set type yogurt and Swiss style yogurt. Set type yogurt is when the yogurt is packaged with the fruit on the bottom of the cup and the yogurt on top. Swiss style yogurt is when the fruit is blended into the yogurt prior to packaging. Lassi and Moru are common beverages in India. Lassi is milk that is sweetened with sugar commonly, less commonly honey and often combined with fruit pulp to create flavored lassi. Mango lassi is a western favorite, as is coconut lassi. Consistency can vary widely, with urban and commercial lassis being of uniform texture through being processed, whereas rural and rustic lassi has curds in it, and sometimes has malai (cream) added or removed. Moru is a popular South Indian summer drink, meant to keep drinkers hydrated through the hot and humid summers of the South. It is prepared by considerably thinning down yogurt with water, adding salt (for electrolyte balance) and spices, usually green chilli peppers, asafoetida, curry leaves and mustard. Large amounts of sugar – or other sweeteners for low-calorie yogurts – are often used in commercial yogurt. Some yogurts contain added starch, pectin (found naturally in fruit), and/or gelatin to create thickness and creaminess artificially at lower cost. Gelatin is a meat or fish product, therefore vegetarians should avoid products containing it. This type of yogurt is also marketed under the name Swiss-style, although it is unrelated to the way yogurt is eaten in Switzerland. Some yogurts, often called "cream line", are made with whole milk which has not been homogenized so the cream rises to the top. Fruit jam is used instead of raw fruit pieces in fruit yogurts to allow storage for weeks. In the UK, Ireland, France and United States, sweetened, flavored yogurt is the most popular type, typically sold in single-serving plastic cups. Common flavors include vanilla, honey, and toffee, and fruit such as strawberry, cherry, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, mango and peach. In the early twenty-first century yogurt flavors inspired by desserts, such as chocolate or cheesecake, have been available. There is concern about the health effects of sweetened yogurt. The United Kingdom and the United States recommend different maximum amounts of daily sugar intake but in both nations many sweetened yogurts have too much.
