Every Olympic city on a map

Every Olympic city on a map. This video features all the locations of the summer Olympics since the first Olympics in Athens 1896. The world wars caused some of the Olympics to be cancelled: 1916 in Berlin, 1940 in Tokyo and 1944 in London. London and Athens are the only cities which have had the honor to host 3 olympic games. Los Angeles, Tokyo and Paris all had the honor of hosting the games two times. The continents of Africa and South America never held Olympic games. However that is about to change for the latter in 2016 when they will be in Rio de Janeiro.

The Koreans had lost narrowly in previous bids for the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. Pyeongchang will be the first city in Asia outside Japan to host the Winter Games. There are just two days left before the Summer Olympics get underway in Rio. A recent survey found 63 percent of Brazilians think hosting the games is doing more harm than good, which is quite a shift in attitude from when Rio first got the games. ABANDONED OLYMPICS VENUES: Incredible Photos Show The Decaying Former Olympic Sites Across The World

ABANDONED OLYMPICS VENUES: Incredible Photos Show The Decaying Former Olympic Sites Across The World What happens when the carnival moves on: Incredible photos show the decaying former Olympic sites across the world - from Germany in 1936 to Beijing in 2008 They used to be brimming with tens of thousands of fans hoping for their countries' teams to be victorious - but eerie photographs have revealed the sites of the past Olympics games have been reduced to rubble by neglect. In Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the disused bobsled from the 1984 Winter Olympics has been vandalised and is now enjoyed by hordes of mountain-bikers, while the Mount Igman ski jumping course threatens to collapse from decomposition. There are similar sites in Athens, Greece, with a swimming pool in the former Olympic Village filled with brown, murky water with a sign emblazoned with the 2004 Summer Games' motto 'Welcome Home' torn in half by vandals. While the site of the Athens Olympic softball and baseball is still standing, the pitch has overgrown with brown weeds and the venue is now used as a shelter for refugees and migrants. The athletes village from the 1936 Olympic Games in Germany has had the windows boarded with timber and sheets of plaster have been ripped from the walls of the deserted building. Nearby at the former Hellinikon Olympic complex, the Canoe and Kayak Slalom Centre has been completely drained, with the bollards formerly used as competitor obstacles still remaining, but now discoloured from the blistering sun. Cities around the world are starting to question if hosting the Olympics is worth it. Most cities simply do not have the infrastructure required to withstand the two-week influx of athletes, coaches, fans, and media members. The money required to build state-of-the-art athletic facilities is skyrocketing, and academic research suggests spending billions on a two-week event is not a wise investment. In the worst-case scenario for host cities, Olympic venues go unused after the games and become white elephants — total wastes of space and money. We’ve seen this at a number of different Olympic sites around the world. Of course, the reasons this happens are specific to each country: Sarajevo, for example, suffered from a gruesome war that caused the 1984 Winter Olympic venues to crumble. Nevertheless, these photos from Reuters, Getty Images, and others have become symbolic of the downside of hosting the Olympics. Every two years a city spends billions of dollars preparing for either the summer or winter Olympics building huge facilities very quickly. But once the Olympic flame is extinguished some of these venues have no use and fall into disrepair, and many years later the results are quite spooky. Some athletes have complained about accommodation and facilities at the upcoming Rio Olympics but whatever the faults they’re nicer than these abandoned Olympics buildings. Here are some of the most haunting abandoned Olympic sites from around the world. Sarajevo Sarajevo was the first communist city to host the Winter Olympics in 1984 when it was still part of Yugoslavia. But 10 years after the Olympics the city came under siege as Yugoslavia split apart into Bosnia and Herzegovina. The conflict lasted four years, during which time some Olympic venues including the bobsled track were allegedly used as artillery storage. The site is now a deserted reminder of winter sports as well as deadly conflict. Greece The Olympics was held in Athens just 12 years ago, but that doesn’t mean the buildings are still in good condition. The beach volleyball centre below is just one building that’s fallen into disrepair since 2004. The Olympic village is also in a bad way. Berlin The 1936 Summer Olympics Games was hosted by none other than Adolf Hitler and the city of Berlin. During the controversial games, where Jewish and black athletes were barred from competing at times, the village hosted 4000 men from over 50 nations. As World War II tore through the country the Olympic village was used as barracks for the German army, and after the war ended the Soviet army occupied the site. Many of the buildings, including the swimming pool, are still standing but in poor condition. Munich Germany hosted the Summer Olympics again in 1972 in the city of Munich. To cope with an influx of international visitors more train stations were built, including the “Bahnhof Munchen Olympiastadion” train station. Now, however, the station sits in the middle of nowhere, covered in graffiti and the tracks have been removed. Beijing Beijing in 2008 was a ripper of a year for Australian athletes, who took home a total of 46 medals. The Chinese city built its Olympic infrastructure rapidly, but left many of its arenas abandoned after the Games. The kayaking course sits empty in the middle of the city, as does the BMX track, covered in snow in winter.

The truth about the Winter Olympics | The Economist

03:00
As the Winter Olympics gets underway in Pyeongchang, South Korea, we examine some of the challenges facing the Games Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.st/2Ex1Dlc The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924. Those Games had 16 events. This year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, in South Korea, will feature 102 events and include participants from an unprecedented 92 countries. Organisers promise these Games will be bigger and better than ever before. But the Winter Olympics face major problems. First is the lack of natural snow. Global warming is causing problems for ski resorts across the globe. On average the world has warmed by about one degree since pre-industrial times. But the European Alps have warmed by about two degrees. If temperatures continue to rise at the current rate, many Olympic venues will no longer be able to rely on real snow. Experts think that of the 21 resorts to have been awarded the Winter Olympics, only between 8 and 12 will be able to host them in 2080. In South Korea and the next Olympic Games here in China in 2022, all the snow will be man-made. Another problem is the falling appeal of winter sports. In recent years the Winter Olympics have struggled to attract younger audiences. More than half of American NBC viewers who watched the 2010 Winter Olympics were over 50 years old. Teenagers barely tuned in. In the past traditional Alpine events and skating were top of the bill. But to pull in a younger crowd, the International Olympic Committee introduced “cooler” events, such as freestyle skiing and snowboarding, with their big jumps and pumping music. Despite falling audience figures, the Winter Olympics are still big business. TV advertisers paid an estimated $800m to the American broadcaster, NBC to publicise their brands during the 2014 Games. This year’s Winter Olympics are thawing relations between North and South Korea. Pyeongchang is only 50 miles away from the North Korean border. Despite tensions between the two countries, they’ve agreed to appear under the same flag at the Games. Kim Jong-un who has built 2 ski resorts is even sending his sister Yo Jong In to represent him in Pyeongchang. Daily Watch: mind-stretching short films throughout the working week. Unlike the Summer Olympics, the Winter Olympics feature sports practised on snow and ice. The first Winter Olympics, the 1924 Winter Olympics, was held in Chamonix, France. The original five sports (broken into nine disciplines) were bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, Nordic skiing (consisting of the disciplines military patrol, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, and ski jumping), and skating (consisting of the disciplines figure skating and speed skating). The Games were held every four years from 1924 until 1936, after which they were interrupted by World War II. The Olympics resumed in 1948 and was again held every four years. The interim competition was held at a time when Athens and the International Olympic Committee were at odds over the decision to hold the Games in different cities of the world. Pagan Origins of the Olympic Games vs Today's Games

23:56
The Total Pagan Entertainment Package The Olympic Games are one of the most highly anticipated events in the sports world today. The Games are a huge event, attracting athletes from nearly every country. Although it has turned into a marketing and merchandising behemoth, the original purpose of the Olympic Games was a far less secular one. During the early years of the Olympics, events were held not as a way to collect multimillion-dollar endorsements, but to honor the gods of ancient Greece. The early Olympic Games have been called the "total pagan entertainment package" by author Tony Perrottet, author of The Naked Olympics: The True Story of the Ancient Games. The Games featured art, poetry readings, writers, plays, painters and sculptors. There were street shows including fire eaters, jugglers, dancers, acrobats and palm readers. Also important was the notion that war was put on hold during the Games. While the Greeks knew better than to try forming permanent truces with their enemies, it was understood that there was a moratorium on fighting during the Olympics. This allowed athletes, vendors, and fans to travel safely to and from the city for the Games, without having to worry about being attacked by marauding bands of mercenaries. Honoring Zeus For the citizens of Greece, the Olympics were a time of great religious celebration. Athletic events were mixed in with sacrifices, rituals, and prayer, as well as great feasting and revelry. For over a thousand years, the Games were held every four years, which made them not only the longest-running athletic event in history, but also one of the longest-running regular religious observations. The games were originally held in honor of Zeus, king of the Olympians. The very first Games consisted of only one athletic event - it was a footrace, which was won by a cook named Korobois. Athletes made regular sacrifices to Zeus (typically pigs or sheep, but other animals would do as well), in hopes that he would recognize them and honor them for their skill and talents. During opening ceremonies, athletes lined up before a giant statue of Zeus holding a thunderbolt, and swore an oath to him in his Temple at Olympia. All Roads Lead to the Olympics Athletes participated in events in the nude. Although there's no clear reason as to why this is the case, historians attribute it to a rite of passage for young Greek men. Nudity was important to the Greeks and they weren't bothered by it. However, many other cultures of the time found it off-putting that the Greeks were oiling each other up and then rolling around on a wrestling floor. The Egyptians and Persians felt that there was something a bit degenerate about the whole thing. While young women were allowed to attend the Games if they were brought in by their father or brother, married women never came to the festivities. Prostitutes were everywhere at the Olympics, and were often imported by merchants from far-off locations. A prostitute could make a significant amount of money during an event as big as the Olympic Games. Sometimes, as many as 40,000 people showed up, so that was a lot of potential clients. Some of the prostitutes were hetaeras, or high-priced escorts, but many were priestesses from temples dedicated to Aphrodite, goddess of love. The End of the Games Around 400 c.e., the Roman emperor Theodosius decided the Olympic Games were too pagan in nature, and banned them completely. This was part of the Roman Empire's shift towards Christianity. During Theodosius' youth, he was tutored by the bishop Ambrose of Milan. Theodosius passed a number of laws that were designed to eliminate Greco-Roman paganism completely, as well as doing away with the rituals and ceremonies that celebrated the old pagan religions of Greece and Rome. To make Christianity the state religion, all vestiges of the old ways had to be eliminated, and that included the Olympic Games. Be sure to read more on the Olympics from N.S. Gill at About Ancient History. And shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live," declares the Lord GOD, "I will not be inquired of by you. Animal Olympics: if the world’s animals held an Olympic Games, who would capture gold? - TomoNews

01:46
EARTH — With the 2016 Rio Olympics set to commence, the top athletes in the world are bracing for their chance at glory. But what if the games weren’t just exclusive to humans, and included all the creatures of the animal kingdom? Who would claim gold? In the 100-meter dash, the cheetah reigns supreme. Built for speed, the world’s fastest mammal can go from 0 to 60 mph in only three seconds, and reach top speeds of 70 mph. In the weightlifting competition, the African elephant is the strongest of them all. Using its long trunk, it can lift a tonne of weight, literally. A tonne. Shifting the games over to the water, the fastest swimmer on Earth is the black marlin. An unfamiliar name, the black marlin can reach speeds of 80 mph. On to the diving board, where another relatively unknown champion emerges. The Cuvier’s beaked whale is on record as reaching depths of 1.9 miles. When it comes to flight, the fastest wings in the animal kingdom belong the peregrine falcon, climbing to great heights and diving through the clouds at speeds of 200 mph. The Olympic Games, featuring human participants only, tip off on August 5. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Here we shall trace the origin of this Games and reveal some interesting anecdotes about it. The origin of the games dates back to 8th century B.C and was conducted in honour of the Greek God Zeus. Basically it was a religious festival and held at Olympia. The athletes who participated were all males and came from every corner of the Greek empire. The sanctuary as it was called was named Mt. Olympos the highest mountain in Greece and also because it was considered the home of the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The first race to be held was in 776B.C called the stadion race. It was a foot race 600ft long. Some sources say this was the only athletic event held for a long time. The Games were held in Olympia every four years for almost 12 centuries. The first modern day Olympics was held in Athens in the year1896 almost 1503 years after it was started.Baron Pierre de Courbetin a Frenchman is given the credit for having restarted the games in the modern era. Delegates from 34 countries participated in the preliminary meeting to restart the games and though Courbetin wanted to hold it in Paris his homeland the delegates convinced him to move it to Athens. The idea of the Olympic flame had its birth in the games at Amsterdam in 1928 but the modern torch relay was inaugurated in Berlin in1936, The Olympic oath was instituted in 1920. Initially the ancient games was a five day programme and today it is a fortnightly e vent. The idea of holding the Winter Olympics came to the fray in1924 and from 1994 it was decided to alternate the summer and winter games. The Olympic flag was instituted in 1908 using the primary colours which would be found in every country’s flag. The five rings represent the continents and their unity. The motto Citius ,Altius Fortius Meaning Faster, Higher and Stronger have motivated athletes and sportsmen and women all over the world to achieve new landmarks in their fields of specialization. In addition to this the Olympics have added a nother feather to their cap by introducing the Paralympics Olympics. The entire event is of such a magnificent nature that organizing it is no easy task. This is done by the International Olympic association with representatives from all countries. This association is the parent body with the countries associations affiliated to it. They exercise immense influence and are well financed and equipped to handle this event. What started as a religious event has turned out to be a popular event viewed with great enthusiasm. A country’s sporting prowess is determined by the medals tally in the games.

1906 Athens Olympics - Opening Ceremony

06:08
Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subscribetotheBFI This early film offers a snapshot of what became known as the Interim (or Intercalated) Games of 1906. Having hosted the first modern Games in 1896, Athens felt that it should be the permanent venue, but the International Olympic Committee disagreed, wanting the event held in different cities around the world. The compromise was this separate event, to be held in Athens between the official Games every four years. Not recognised in Olympic records, the 1906 games nevertheless introduced some key elements of Olympic ritual, such as the march past of the teams in the opening ceremony. The parade can be seen here after the arrival of royalty, including King Edward VII, and other dignitaries. Despite their success, the Interim Games were never held again. BOYKO - Olympic Games ( Dj Boyko in Sochi 2014 Olympics Medals Plaza )

03:32
Dj Boyko is official artist of Olympic Games 2014 in Russia. His performances will be held February 8 and 9 - in the opening days of the 2014 Olympic Games in the main arena of awarding medals Sochi Medals Plaza. More BOYKO's music http://www.boyko.dj Music track in video: BOYKO - Olympic Games (2014) The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, are scheduled to take place from 6 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi,[3] Russia, with some events held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana. Ninety-eight events in fifteen winter sports will be held. Both the Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC). Sochi was selected as the host city on 4 July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City,[4] defeating bids from Salzburg, Austria, and Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Sochi Olympics will be the first Olympics in the Russian Federation since the breakup of the USSR. The events of the 2014 Winter Olympics will be held around two clusters of new venues; an Olympic Park was constructed in the Imeretin Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with Fisht Olympic Stadium and the Games' indoor venues located within walking distance, and snow events will be held at Krasnaya Polyana. In preparation for the games, organizers focused on modernizing the telecommunications, electric power, and transportation infrastructures of the region. While originally budgeted at US$12 billion, various factors caused the budget to expand to over US$51 billion, making the 2014 Winter Olympics the most expensive Olympics in history. The lead-up to the 2014 Winter Olympics were plagued by several major controversies, including allegations of corruption leading to the severe cost overruns experienced by the Games, along with concerns from politicians and athletes over the effects of Russia's ban on "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" on the Games.

Rio 2016 Paralympic Games | Opening Ceremony

04:05:29
Rio got the party started in spectacular style on Wednesday (7 September) with an Opening Ceremony celebrating the transformative power of the Paralympics. The city’s iconic Maracana stadium was turned into a sea of light and colour and reverberated to Samba beats during a Ceremony that lived up to its promise to surprise, provoke and celebrate – all with a Brazilian twist. The Rio Games – the first ever hosted in Latin America – will see athletes from 160 teams compete in 528 medal events across 22 sports in 10 days of exciting competition. And the Brazilian people showed they are ready to get behind the Games as a passionate and noisy crowd packed into the Maracana for the official curtain-raiser. Around 1.7million tickets have been sold for the Games – more than in Beijing in 2008. The chairman of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Sir Philip Craven said that 194 years to the day since Prince Dom Pedro declared Brazil’s independence, the 2016 Paralympics marked “another new dawn” in the country’s “colourful and proud history.” Delivering his opening address, he promised the 2016 Paralympics would be the “People’s Games” and predicted they would “bring a new perspective to everyone in this country by showing that the human spirit knows no limits.” Addressing the Brazilians in the crowd directly, Sir Philip said: “Finalmente obrigado aos Cariocas e Brasileiros. In the last weeks you have shown great desire to make these the People’s Games. We will not disappoint you.” President of the Rio 2016 organising committee Carlos Arthur Nuzman said Rio stood “ready to make history.” “We are here in the best place on the planet with the most important mission on the face of earth … we are together for the equality of people,” he said. Brazil’s President Michel Temer officially declared the Games open. The Ceremony, the brainchild of creative directors Vik Muniz, Fred Gelli and Marcelo Rubens Paiva, was built around the theme of ‘The heart has no limits. Everybody has a heart’. The trio met with athletes and even carried out multi-sensory experiments as part of the creative process in designing the show. They said: “We were surprised by the power of the Paralympic sport of transforming disability into high performance and its impact on the formation of identities and contribution to full and thrilling lives.” The Ceremony took the audience on a journey which celebrated the origins of Paralympic sport at Stoke Mandeville in Great Britain, as well as Brazil’s love for dance, music, sport and the beach. It began with a countdown started by extreme wheelchair athlete Aaaron Wheelz, who travelled at high speed down a 17-metre-high ramp, the equivalent of a six-storey building, before jumping through a panel featuring the number zero. The parade of athletes was led into the Maracana by Ibrahim Al-Hussein, the flag bearer for the International Paralympic Athletes (IPA) team. The swimmer, who lost his leg in a bombing in Syria, had earlier told how he was struggling to comprehend the honour of leading his fellow athletes into the arena. Completing the line-up of nations were hosts Brazil, whose team were welcomed with an ecstatic reception from the crowd. During the parade volunteers pieced together a giant jigsaw puzzle made up of 1,160 pieces which formed a picture featuring 6,315 photos of those taking part. US Paralympic snowboarder Amy Purdy delighted the crowd with a dance partner she had kept secret until the big night – an industrial robot called Kuka – in a segment exploring man’s coexistence with technology. The Paralympic flag was carried into the arena by 10 children from AACD, an association that offers support for children with impairments. And the lighting of the cauldron was greeted with a huge roar after an emotionally-charged final stage of the Paralympic flame’s journey around Brazil. The crowd had gasped when Marcia Malsar, a member of the Brazilian delegation that boosted Paralympic sport with her performance at the 1984 Games, fell in the rain-soaked stadium. But she quickly rose to her feet – to a standing ovation from the crowd – before handing on the flame to Brazilian Paralympic record-holder Clodoaldo Silva, who lit the cauldron. Sir Philip said: “Over the next 12 days, through the performances of Paralympians, you will see the true meaning of sport and the true definition of ability. “You will witness how Paralympic sport has the ability to inspire an individual, and the outstanding capacity to transform communities, countries and continents. “In a country which has faced major challenges of late, Paralympians will switch your focus from perceived limitations, to a world full of possibility and endless opportunity. They will surprise you, inspire and excite you, but most of all they will change you.”

OLIMPIC 2008 drummers at the Opening Ceremony 2 HD

06:20
OLIMPIC 2008 drummers at the Opening Ceremony 2 The 2,008 fou, a 4,000-year-old percussion instrument in China, formed a matrix that occupied both sides of the arena, symbolising the year of the Olympic Games in Beijing, and the roar of thunder surged from the floor of the stadium. The fou was originally a large pot-like container used to store wine or other liquid. Back in the State of Qin (a state during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods of China), people, when they became drunk and wanted to sing, would use it to pound out a beat. Gradually, it evolved into a drum- like instrument played by the host at a party. The drummers at the Opening Ceremony rhythmically beat the fou and chanted with their arms outstretched: “Friends have come from afar, how happy we are.” This famous excerpt from The Analects by Confucius was the warmest greeting of the ancient Chinese nation transcending time and space.
