Today I’m here to go through one of the most highly-discussed topics in fitness: protein powder. News flash guy...protein powders are NOT important just because of their protein content. Anytime we consume protein, it causes a spike our insulin levels - this is called being insulinogenic. This reaction opens up our cells to be more receptive to the nutrients from the protein you are taking in...Let’s breakdown the best forms of protein powder to continue building lean muscle and getting you closer to your six pack abs. My most favorite type of protein powder hands-down is grass-fed whey protein isolate. When you notice the words “protein isolate” on the label, that means the protein has been separated from all the unnecessary junk in the whey so the protein that is being absorbed is much more pure. Any “grass-fed” protein means the whey is being derived from naturally-sourced, non-grain fed cattle that will pass down the good nutrients from their diet into the protein you will be taking in. Second to grass-fed whey protein isolate is pea protein. Pea protein is good for your digestive system and is something a bit different so that you can change up your protein intake so your body doesn’t get too accustomed to the same sources of nutrients. The third best form of protein powder isn’t even powder...It’s meat. You can't out-supplement protein from whole foods in your diet. I recommend options like organic chicken breast or sustainably-caught fish like cod. A word of caution everyone...Stay away from casein protein. Casein digests slowly over night and because it causes excess mucus production in your intestines, also causes the uptake of other good nutrients to slow as well. Smaller quantities of casein will be absorbed into the body through eating the right whole foods. Beef protein protein powder is another form I would suggest you to stay away from. The quality of beef protein powder cut with outside amino acids is not nearly as beneficial as eating an actual nice cut of beef or sticking to grass-fed whey protein isolate for cleaner and healthier results. What I want you guys to take away from this video today is the importance of what you choose to put into your body - if you eat clean and source your nutrients the healthy way, you are more likely to get better, cleaner results. Make sure to also change up what you’re eating to avoid triggering unwanted antibody responses in the body that can result in a nutrition plateau. I explain the OTHER component here! http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Casein vs Whey - Dairy Addiction The majority of people are unable to properly digest dairy - symptoms such as bloating, gas, constipation and stomach pain are common, however more serious problems such as chronic inflammation and diabetes have been found. For years it has been thought that the main culprit was lactose, however new evidence points to the most common protein in milk, casein, being a leading cause for dairy intolerance. Overview (1): 1. Beta-casein proteins make up around 30% of milk’s proteins and come in one of two genetic varieties: A1 and A2. 2. A2 is the original variety, with A1 appearing somewhere around 5,000 - 10,000 years ago through a mutation found in some European herds. 3. BCM-7 is a bioactive opioid peptide which is formed in much greater levels when we consume dairy with A1 beta-casein when compared to A2 beta-casein. 4. BCM-7 has been linked to delayed digestion, gastrointestinal inflammation, pain and bloating. 5. There are opioid receptors in the nervous, endocrine and immune systems that respond to the consumption of BCM-7. (3) 6. Reactions to BCM-7 have been speculated to be factors in diabetes, heart disease, schizophrenia and autism. (3) 7. Research Bomb: A 2014 study in the World Journal of Men’s Health found that casein promoted the proliferation of prostate cancer cells, so casein is also linked to cancer. (2) How to Avoid Casein: 1. Casein is found in all dairy products, such as milk, cheese and butter. (4) 2. Additionally, to avoid casein you would want to check the label for milk and dairy ingredients. Even foods you wouldn’t expect, such as some non-dairy creamers, margarine, and lunch meats can have casein. (4) 3. In the US, food labels must include a warning if foods contain common allergy substances, such as peanuts and milk. You will see statements like “made with milk ingredients” when products contain casein. (4) Tips: 1. If you decide to avoid dairy, try to consume products enriched with calcium, such as many cereals and milk alternatives (soy, rice, etc). Leafy greens such as kale are also good sources of calcium. 2. If you do not enjoy one milk substitute, try another. There are some creamy alternatives, such as soy milk and cashew milk, as well as much thinner options, such as almond milk and rice milk. If you do not like one, you could still love another! 3. Always ask for ingredient details when you eat out to be sure you are not unknowingly served dairy. 4. Dairy free does not mean casein free, so read the label. A ketogenic diet has done wonders for my skin -- is it perfect? Most definitely not -- but the painful cysts are all but gone. To recap, here is what I would recommend if you are experiencing acne on a ketogenic diet: 1. Be patient, your body is adapting and trying to heal all of the hormonal problems you've accumulated over your life. Things will settle down several months in, generally. 2. Eat a cleaner keto diet. In the beginning, it's fine to just focus on keeping carbs down by whatever means necessary, but over time, we want to fine tune. If you can, get an allergy test done and eliminate any food intolerances from your diet. For me, that is cheese -- for others it may be whey protein powder, eggs, certain spices, etc. Try to get some healthy, low carb vegetables in to help obtain those crucial micronutrients. 3. Work on hormonal health -- drink your water, get good rest, eat sufficient protein for your body to build the hormones it needs. For me, when my cycles stabilized, my other hormonal problems seemed to heal with them -- including my cystic acne. 4. Practice good hygiene, as always. Again, I do not think you need to buy really fancy, expensive products. All of what I use I can find at a drug store. If there is something that has helped you, please do share with others below. Butter has a bad reputation for being high in fat, and even worse for being a much feared dairy product. But I'm hear to let you know butter is okay to eat even if you are dairy free. Here's why - Yes, butter is a dairy product of course. Anything made from milk is dairy, and butter certainly is made from milk. BUT, dairy isn't some magical substance that causes allergic reactions and digestive issues, it's just that a few components within dairy can irritate people. Namely, the protein and carbs within diary. People who are allergic to diary are likely allergic to the proteins within it. The two proteins in milk are casein and whey. Guess what, butter has near 0 casein and whey in it! People who ware lactose intolerant can't effectively digest lactose (the carb in milk also known as milk sugar). Folks with digestive issues such as crohn's, colitis, ibd, etc can also struggle with lactose digesting. Guess what, butter has near 0 lactose in it! Milk on its own has a little bit of everything. It's about 85% water, with a few percent fat (buttermilk), protein (casein and whey), carbohydrate (lactose aka milk sugar), and trace minerals as well. Not surprisingly it is a little of everything a baby would need to grow. Butter is about 80% of the fat from milk (buttermilk), and the remaining 20% is water. Notice that there is no protein or carb. None of the stuff in dairy that typically irritates people. So butter is good to go! Even on a dairy free diet most folk shouldn't have adverse reaction to butter. Butter is even included on thy hyper restrictive Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) I assume because the authors recognized that it does not contain any lactose.
