I explain the OTHER component here! http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Casein vs Whey - Dairy Addiction The majority of people are unable to properly digest dairy - symptoms such as bloating, gas, constipation and stomach pain are common, however more serious problems such as chronic inflammation and diabetes have been found. For years it has been thought that the main culprit was lactose, however new evidence points to the most common protein in milk, casein, being a leading cause for dairy intolerance. Overview (1): 1. Beta-casein proteins make up around 30% of milk’s proteins and come in one of two genetic varieties: A1 and A2. 2. A2 is the original variety, with A1 appearing somewhere around 5,000 - 10,000 years ago through a mutation found in some European herds. 3. BCM-7 is a bioactive opioid peptide which is formed in much greater levels when we consume dairy with A1 beta-casein when compared to A2 beta-casein. 4. BCM-7 has been linked to delayed digestion, gastrointestinal inflammation, pain and bloating. 5. There are opioid receptors in the nervous, endocrine and immune systems that respond to the consumption of BCM-7. (3) 6. Reactions to BCM-7 have been speculated to be factors in diabetes, heart disease, schizophrenia and autism. (3) 7. Research Bomb: A 2014 study in the World Journal of Men’s Health found that casein promoted the proliferation of prostate cancer cells, so casein is also linked to cancer. (2) How to Avoid Casein: 1. Casein is found in all dairy products, such as milk, cheese and butter. (4) 2. Additionally, to avoid casein you would want to check the label for milk and dairy ingredients. Even foods you wouldn’t expect, such as some non-dairy creamers, margarine, and lunch meats can have casein. (4) 3. In the US, food labels must include a warning if foods contain common allergy substances, such as peanuts and milk. You will see statements like “made with milk ingredients” when products contain casein. (4) Tips: 1. If you decide to avoid dairy, try to consume products enriched with calcium, such as many cereals and milk alternatives (soy, rice, etc). Leafy greens such as kale are also good sources of calcium. 2. If you do not enjoy one milk substitute, try another. There are some creamy alternatives, such as soy milk and cashew milk, as well as much thinner options, such as almond milk and rice milk. If you do not like one, you could still love another! 3. Always ask for ingredient details when you eat out to be sure you are not unknowingly served dairy. 4. Dairy free does not mean casein free, so read the label. However, it if you really enjoy it as a source of nutrition in your diet, and don’t suffer from the side effects. It’s ok to have. Which leads to the next question… Do you need dairy in your diet? Absolutely not. While diary does have lots of important nutrition like calcium, protein, and Vitamin B12, you can easily get those from other sources. Leafy greens, lean meats, and whole foods have all those nutrients WITHOUT all the sugar or hormone increases dairy. I personally don’t consume dairy for this reason. Does Dairy Help You Lose Weight? No. Weight loss is about having two things working correctly. Eating the Right Amount of Calories AND Having Properly Functioning Hormones. Dairy provides no advantage to losing weight and if you have an intolerance could impede some weight loss progress. What are the best kinds of dairy to consume? If you’re going to get your dairy on, Low-fat unflavored greek yogurt, keifer, and grass fed whey protein are the best. If you’re going to drink milk, make sure it’s organic. What kind of dairy should you never consume? Anything non-organic I’d avoid. Because dairy is already shown to raise IGF-1, avoiding any extra chemicals pumped into cows is a good idea.

Effect of Whey Protein on Insulin Whey is one of the two main proteins in milk - the other is casein. Whey, like all proteins, is made up of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. When we consume protein, we then break down these amino acids and use them for muscle growth and tissue repair. Whey contains all three BCAAs along with all of the essential amino acids. Whey is highly insulinogenic - consuming whey leads to a sharp increase in insulin levels. This response does not have to do with blood sugar levels - when a food has a high glycemic index, consuming it will cause a large increase in blood sugar levels. In response to this, the body produces insulin to combat the high blood sugar and allow glucose to enter our cells for energy. This is not what is happening when we consume whey - insulin release is responding to amino acids, not glucose levels. Insulin binds to cells to allow them to take up energy, which can be glucose or amino acids from proteins. The amino acids in whey cause an insulin release. Whey also leads to the release of GIP and GLP-1, two gastrointestinal hormones that also raise insulin levels. This increase in insulin is actually a good thing! Whey is a fast acting protein, and the spike in insulin allows amino acids into the muscle cells to encourage repair, helping us to gain muscle and heal quickly. Consuming whey protein has actually been shown to lower blood glucose levels when consumed during or directly before a meal. A 2005 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when whey was combined in a high-sugar meal, individuals with type-2 diabetes had a lower blood glucose level following the meal than if no whey was consumed. This is thought to be because the increased insulin aided the body in glucose digestion. Generally, the better the whey, the higher the insulin spike and thus the more effective at delivering building blocks into the cells for the purpose or repair and growth. Best to consume whey directly following exercise. It is quickly broken down and made available to muscle cells for repair post workout. Whey protein isolate contains 90% protein and thus has less lactose, fat and cholesterol than whey protein concentrate. To get the most out of your protein, go for the whey protein isolate. You will experience less bloating and get more of the benefits - lean, ripped muscles. Too much protein is dangerous, so be sure not to consume excess protein. A ketogenic diet has done wonders for my skin -- is it perfect? Most definitely not -- but the painful cysts are all but gone. To recap, here is what I would recommend if you are experiencing acne on a ketogenic diet: 1. Be patient, your body is adapting and trying to heal all of the hormonal problems you've accumulated over your life. Things will settle down several months in, generally. 2. Eat a cleaner keto diet. In the beginning, it's fine to just focus on keeping carbs down by whatever means necessary, but over time, we want to fine tune. If you can, get an allergy test done and eliminate any food intolerances from your diet. For me, that is cheese -- for others it may be whey protein powder, eggs, certain spices, etc. Try to get some healthy, low carb vegetables in to help obtain those crucial micronutrients. 3. Work on hormonal health -- drink your water, get good rest, eat sufficient protein for your body to build the hormones it needs. For me, when my cycles stabilized, my other hormonal problems seemed to heal with them -- including my cystic acne. 4. Practice good hygiene, as always. I'm allergic to dairy (I'm not lactose, it's a serious allergy and the severity is equivalent to a peanut allergy). This is a high protein full day of eating for those that cannot eat dairy or want to have a non-dairy diet. I have a high metabolism and find it difficult to put on weight, so I tend to eat 3,000 - 3,4000 calories a day. Additionally, I try to get in at least 170 grams of protein a day (one gram of protein per lb of bodyweight, I weigh 170). I've been bodybuilding for about a year and a half, but I've been largely inconsistent because of school and other commitments. With school winding down, I am going to take it much more seriously and put on quality mass & gain strength this summer. I know it can be difficult to find good sources of calories and protein without dairy, since a lot of dairy products like cheese and whey protein are staples in many bodybuilding diets. In this video I explain how I work around these foods, with my non-dairy substitutions. Thanks so much for watching my video!
