This is Viktor Suvorov's book presentation at the United States Naval Academy on October 7, 2009. In his recent book "The Chief Culprit" the bestselling author Viktor Suvorov probes newly released Soviet documents and reevaluates existing material to analyze Stalin's strategic design to conquer Europe and the reasons behind his controversial support for Nazi Germany. He argues that Stalin was caught just days before launching his own assault into Central Europe. Thus the Red Army's offensive posture rendered it uniquely vulnerable to German attack. A former Soviet army intelligence officer (true name Vladimir Rezun), the author explains that Stalin's strategy leading up to World War II grew from Vladimir Lenin's belief that if World War I did not ignite the worldwide Communist revolution, then a second world war would be needed to achieve it. Stalin saw Nazi Germany as the power that would fight and weaken capitalist countries so that Soviet armies could then sweep across Europe. Suvorov reveals how Stalin conspired with German leaders to bypass the Versailles Treaty, which forbade German rearmament, and secretly trained German engineers and officers and provided bases and factories for war. He also calls attention to the 1939 nonaggression pact between the Soviet Union and Germany that allowed Hitler to proceed with his plans to invade Poland, fomenting war in Europe. Suvorov debunks the theory that Stalin was duped by Hitler and that the Soviet Union was a victim of Nazi aggression. Instead, he makes the case that Stalin neither feared Hitler nor mistakenly trusted him. Suvorov maintains that after Germany occupied Poland, defeated France, and started to prepare for an invasion of Great Britain, Hitler's intelligence services detected the Soviet Union's preparations for a major war against Germany. This detection, he argues, led to Germany's preemptive war plan and the launch of an invasion of the USSR. Stalin emerges from the pages of this book as a genius consumed by the vision of a worldwide Communist revolution at any cost--a leader who wooed Hitler and Germany in his own effort to conquer the world. In contradicting traditional theories about Soviet planning, the book is certain to provoke debate among historians throughout the world. About the Author VIKTOR SUVOROV is the author of eighteen books that have been translated into more than twenty languages, including "Inside the Aquarium: The Making of a Top Soviet Spy" and "Icebreaker: Who Started the Second World War?" A Soviet army officer who served in military intelligence, he defected in 1978 to the United Kingdom, where he worked as an intelligence analyst and lecturer. He lives in England. Hear from bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize Finalist, Arthur Herman, as he discusses his latest book, "Freedom's Forge." Remarkable as it may seem today, there once was a time when the president of the United States could pick up the phone and ask the president of General Motors to resign his position and take the reins of a great national enterprise. And the CEO would oblige, no questions asked, because it was his patriotic duty. In Freedom's Forge, bestselling author Arthur Herman takes us back to that time, revealing how two extraordinary American business men — automobile magnate William Knudsen and shipbuilder Henry J. Kaiser — helped corral, cajole, and inspire business leaders across the country to mobilize the "arsenal of democracy" that propelled the Allies to victory in World War II. Dr. Arthur Herman is a former visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, and the author of many books, including How the Scots Invented the Modern World and Gandhi & Churchill which was the 2009 Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction.

"Panoramic…definitive…essential reading for anyone interested in World War II.” – Kirkus Starred Review The prizewinning historian and bestselling author of STALINGRAD and D-DAY reconstructs the Battle of the Bulge in this riveting new account. On December 16, 1944, Hitler launched his ‘last gamble’ in the snow-covered forests and gorges of the Ardennes in Belgium. The harsh winter conditions and the savagery of the battle became comparable to the Eastern Front. There was terrible ferocity on both sides, and the Ardennes—involving more than a million men—would prove to be the battle which finally broke the back of the Wehrmacht. In this deeply researched work, Antony Beevor gives us the definitive account of the Ardennes offensive which was to become the greatest battle of World War II.

John Kenneth "Ken" Galbraith, OC (15 October 1908 -- 29 April 2006) was a Canadian and later, U.S., economist, public official and diplomat, and a leading proponent of 20th-century American liberalism. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0395741750/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0395741750&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=d6745224b4bbfc06c99a586c5049c147 His books on economic topics were bestsellers from the 1950s through the 2000s, during which time Galbraith fulfilled the role of public intellectual. In macro-economical terms he was a Keynesian and an institutionalist. Galbraith was a long-time Harvard faculty member and stayed with Harvard University for half a century as a professor of economics. He was a prolific author and wrote four dozen books, including several novels, and published over a thousand articles and essays on various subjects. Among his most famous works was a popular trilogy on economics, American Capitalism (1952), The Affluent Society (1958), and The New Industrial State (1967). Galbraith was active in Democratic Party politics, serving in the administrations of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; he served as United States Ambassador to India under the Kennedy administration. His prodigious literary output and outspokenness made him arguably "the best-known economist in the world" during his lifetime. Galbraith was one of few recipients both of the Medal of Freedom (1946) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2000) for his public service and contribution to science. The government of France made him a Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur. Galbraith was an important figure in 20th-century institutional economics, and provided an exemplary institutionalist perspective on economic power. Among his numerous writing, Galbraith cherished The New Industrial State and The Affluent Society as his two best. As for the later works, economist and Galbraith friend Mike Sharpe visited him in 2004, on which occasion Galbraith gave Sharpe a copy of what would be Galbraith last book, The Economics of Innocent Fraud. Galbraith confided in Sharpe that "this is my best book", an assertion Galbraith delivered "a little mischievously." After the beginning of the Great Recession of 2008 Galbraith The Great Crash, 1929 (1955) and other books containing warnings about the dangers of an unrestrained speculative mood without proper government oversight found an attentive reader again. In 2010, the Library of America published a new edition of Galbraith major works, edited by his son, James K. Galbraith: The Affluent Society & Other Writings, 1952--1967: American Capitalism, The Great Crash, 1929, The Affluent Society, and The New Industrial State. On this occasion, Bill Moyers interviewed James K. Galbraith about his father, his works and legacy. In American Capitalism: The Concept of Countervailing Power, published in 1952, Galbraith concluded that the American economy was managed by a triumvirate of big business, big labor, and an activist government. Galbraith defined the actions of the industry lobby groups and unions as countervailing power. He contrasted this arrangement with the previous pre-Depression era where big business had relatively free rein over the economy. His 1954 bestseller The Great Crash, 1929 describes the famous Wall Street meltdown of stock prices and how markets progressively become decoupled from reality in a speculative boom. The book is also a platform for Galbraith's keen insights, and humour, into human behavior when wealth is threatened. It has never been out of print. In his most famous work, The Affluent Society (1958), which also became a bestseller, Galbraith outlined his view that to become successful, post-World War II America should make large investments in items such as highways and education using funds from general taxation. Galbraith also critiqued the assumption that continually increasing material production is a sign of economic and societal health. Because of this Galbraith is sometimes considered one of the first post-materialists. In this book, he coined and popularized the phrase "conventional wisdom". Galbraith worked on the book while in Switzerland, and had originally titled it Why The Poor Are Poor but changed it to The Affluent Society at his wife's suggestion. The Affluent Society contributed (likely to a significant degree, given that Galbraith had the ear of President Kennedy) to the "war on poverty", the government spending policy introduced by the administrations of Kennedy and Johnson. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kenneth_Galbraith

The Second World War has been humanity's most devastating conflicts, one that we'll be analyzing from an economic perspective as well. Understanding the economics behind World War II is essential because they make it clear to a significant extent who and why won WWII. From an economic perspective, World War 2 was initially balanced but as of 1941, the side that ultimately won World War 2 gained a significant advantage. Were there military winners of World War II? Yes. Were there economic winners Please like, comment and subscribe if you've enjoyed this video. From the author of Masters and Commanders, Andrew Roberts' The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War has been hailed as the finest single-volume account of this epic conflict. The Second World War lasted for 2,174 days and claimed the lives of over 50 million people. Why did it take the course that it did? Why did the Axis lose? And could they, with a different strategy, have won? Ranging from the Western front to North Africa, from the Baltic to the Far East, he brings the story of the war - and those who fought it - into focus as never before. 'One of the greatest historians of our time ... His masterpiece' Oliver Marre, Observer 'An undoubted triumph. This, simply, is the best one-volume history of the Second World War currently available' Laurence Rees 'Magnificent ... Essential' Peter Watts, Time Out 'In what might be his best book yet, Roberts gives us the war as seen from the other side of the hill - the German Reich' Nigel Jones, Sunday Telegraph Andrew Roberts's Masters and Commanders was one of the most acclaimed, bestselling history books of 2008. His previous books include Salisbury: Victorian Titan (1999), which won the Wolfson History Prize and the James Stern Silver Pen Award for Non-Fiction, Hitler and Churchill: Secrets of Leadership (2003), which coincided with four-part BBC2 history series.

The highly-anticipated new book from the bestselling author of SEABISCUIT. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of Louie Zamperini, a young man from a defiant California boyhood and a former Olympic athlete. UNBROKEN is the story of Zamperini's unforgettable journey into extremity-- a stunning testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

In January 2016, the Institute of Contemporary History released the first reprint of Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" since World War II. One year on, the German publisher says the book has sold some 85,000 copies and spent 35 weeks on Der Spiegel non-fiction best-seller list. Feedback from the book's distributors suggests most people purchasing the new edition are academics or people with a keen interest in historical events.Dr. Magnus Brechtken, deputy director of the Institute of Contemporary History said that critics concerned that the new edition could incite negative outcomes from far right groups should not be worried. The annotated edition counters Hitler's original text and is the antithesis of their ideology, he said. http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/04/europe/hitler-mein-kampf-reprint-germany/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

This film was taken when Bf-109 ace Franz Stigler met B-17 pilot Charlie Brown for the first time since their encounter during WWII! The complete story of Franz and Charlie can be read in the international bestselling book, "A Higher Call," available in bookstores worldwide. The song in this video is titled "End Titles (From ''The Peacemaker'')" by Hans Zimmer. It is available in the album, "The Film Music Of Hans Zimmer Vol. 2" on Amazon.com About Franz Stigler: Franz Stigler started flying gliders at age 12 and soloed in a bi-plane in 1933. He joined Lufthansa, becoming an Airline Captain, before joining the Luftwaffe in 1940. There, he became an instructor pilot, with one of his students being Gerhard Barkhorn, who would later become the second highest scoring Ace in history with over 300 victories. Franz transferred to Bf 109 fighter aircraft upon learning of the loss of his brother August, who died piloting a bomber shot down over the English Channel. Franz flew combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Western Europe. He served as a Squadron Commander of three squadrons (Numbers 6, 8, and 12, of JG 27) and twice a Wing Commander, all flying Bf 109 fighters. Franz formed EJG-1, possibly the first ever pre-jet training squadron before being hand picked as the Technical Officer of Gen. Adolf Galland's elite JV 44, "Squadron of Experts," flying the Me-262 jet. Franz was credited with 28 confirmed victories and over thirty probables. He flew 487 combat missions, was wounded four times, and was shot down seventeen times, four by enemy fighters, four by ground fire, and nine times by gunners on American bombers. He bailed out six times and rode his damaged aircraft down eleven times. He emigrated to Canada in 1953 and became a successful businessman. In addition to his many Luftwaffe decorations, Franz was presented with the "Order of the Star of Peace" by the Federation of Combattant Allies En Europe for his act of compassion on December 20, 1943. He is believed to be the only Luftwaffe pilot to be so recognized. Franz was also made an honorary member of the 379th Bomb Group Association. Our friend, Franz, died in 2008 at the age of 93. About Charlie Brown: Charlie Brown graduated as a US Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. in April 1943. He arrived in England in early November 1943 as a B-17F pilot/aircraft commander and was wounded twice in completing 29 bomber combat missions out of 31 attempts (24 over Germany proper) with the famed 379th Bomb Group. He then delivered fighters and bombers, and flew transports from North Ireland to the United Kingdom until becoming a B-17 instructor pilot stateside. Itching to return to duty overseas, Charlie became a C-54/C-87 pilot and flew in the CBI theatre until the end of the war. After retiring from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel, Charlie accepted an appointment as a Senior Foreign Service Reserve Officer, serving for six years throughout Laos and Vietnam during the Vietnam War. After thirty years of government service he retired in 1972 and formed a combustion research company. In 1992 he was recognized by the Governor of West Virginia (Charlie's home state) with the "Distinguished West Virginia Award," both for his government service and research career. He was awarded a symbolic "Governor's Medal" by Governor Jeb Bush on October, 2001. Charlie's most prestigious honor was belatedly bestowed by the USAF in February 2008, when he was awarded the Air Force Cross (second only to the Medal of Honor) for bringing his badly damaged B-17 home to England during his December 20, 1943 mission. Our friend, Charlie, died in November 2008 at the age of 86.

Adolf Hitler Mein Kampf (German: [maɪ̯n kampf], My Struggle) is a 1925 autobiographical book by Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler. The work describes the process by which Hitler became antisemitic and outlines his political ideology and future plans for Germany. Volume 1 of Mein Kampf was published in 1925 and Volume 2 in 1926. The book was edited by Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess. Hitler began Mein Kampf while imprisoned for what he considered to be "political crimes" following his failed Putsch in Munich in November 1923. Although Hitler received many visitors initially, he soon devoted himself entirely to the book. As he continued, Hitler realized that it would have to be a two-volume work, with the first volume scheduled for release in early 1925. The governor of Landsberg noted at the time that "he [Hitler] hopes the book will run into many editions, thus enabling him to fulfill his financial obligations and to defray the expenses incurred at the time of his trial." The book was a bestseller in Germany during the 1930s. After Hitler's death, copyright of Mein Kampf passed to the state government of Bavaria, which refused to allow any copying or printing of the book in Germany. In 2016, following the expiry of the copyright held by the Bavarian state government, Mein Kampf was republished in Germany for the first time since 1945, which prompted public debate and divided reactions from Jewish groups.

The first reprint of Adolf Hitler's autobiography "Mein Kampf," the first since the end of World War II, has become a surprise bestseller in Germany after it was banned for seven decades. The Institute of Contemporary History of Munich, the book's publisher, said recently that about 85,000 copies of the new annotated version of the Nazi leader's infamous anti-Semitic manifesto had been sold since its release in January last year. The book is now in its sixth print run. Mein Kampf, which means "My Struggle" in English, was published in two volumes in 1925-1926. Written while Hitler was in prison, it features autobiographical information about his youth and explains his anti-Semitic and extremist views. For 70 years, the hate-filled book was banned out of respect for victims of the Nazis and to prevent incitement of hatred. But the book finally entered the public domain, as historians widely agree on the dangers of reducing that period of history to just one man, and the need to look at the causes and consequences of totalitarian ideologies. "Hitler was important for National Socialism, but Hitler would have been a nobody in a different context. Hitler would be a nobody today. Hitler needed certain conditions in order to found his National Socialist movement," said Ardent Bauerkamper, a historian at the Free University of Berlin. Bauerkamper said the new dual-volume version is very different from the old one, refuting the idea that it will fuel the rise of white supremacists and neo-Nazis. "This is a critical edition. I mean, there are a lot of annotations, a lot of corrections, a lot of footnotes, remarks, critical commentaries. So I don't think this edited edition of Mein Kampf is really a danger, he said. Explaining the book's popularity, readers said it has fostered debate on the renewed rise of authoritarian political views and right-wing slogans in contemporary Western society. "I think there's value in that because you've got a resurgence of right-wing politics, especially like in the UK. And people don't seem to realize it," said a resident of Berlin. "I think it's super important given that the fear propaganda is being used so much in America right now, which is very prominent. I think that if we really dissected some historical events, it would go a really long way," said another. http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20170108/8040351.shtml#!language=1 Subscribe us on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CCTVPlus CCTV+ official website: http://www.cctvplus.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cctv-news-content Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NewsContent.CCTVPLUS Twitter: https://twitter.com/CCTV_Plus

Americans call the Second World War “The Good War.” But before it even began, America’s wartime ally Josef Stalin had killed millions of his own citizens—and kept killing them during and after the war. Before Hitler was finally defeated, he had murdered six million Jews and nearly as many other Europeans. At war’s end, both the German and the Soviet killing sites fell behind the iron curtain, leaving the history of mass killing in darkness. Bloodlands is a new kind of European history, presenting the mass murders committed by the Nazi and Stalinist regimes as two aspects of a single history, in the time and place where they occurred: between Germany and Russia, when Hitler and Stalin both held power. Assiduously researched, deeply humane, and utterly definitive, Bloodlands will be required reading for anyone seeking to understand the central tragedy of modern history. From Booklist If there is an explanation for the political killing perpetrated in eastern Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, historian Snyder roots it in agriculture. Stalin wanted to collectivize farmers; Hitler wanted to eliminate them so Germans could colonize the land. The dictators wielded frightening power to advance such fantasies toward reality, and the despots toted up about 14 million corpses between them, so stupefying a figure that Snyder sets himself three goals here: to break down the number into the various actions of murder that comprise it, from liquidation of the kulaks to the final solution; to restore humanity to the victims via surviving testimony to their fates; and to deny Hitler and Stalin any historical justification for their policies, which at the time had legions of supporters and have some even today. Such scope may render Snyder’s project too imposing to casual readers, but it would engage those exposed to the period’s chronology and major interpretive issues, such as the extent to which the Nazi and Soviet systems may be compared. Solid and judicious scholarship for large WWII collections.

Islam At The CrossRoad by Muhammad Asad This book is one of the leading books of Muhammad Asad. BIO: Muhammad Asad was a Jewish-born Austro-Hungarian journalist, traveler, writer, linguist, thinker, political theorist, diplomat and Islamic scholar. Asad was one of the most influential European Muslims of the 20th century. By the age of thirteen, young Weiss had acquired a passing fluency in Hebrew and Aramaic, other than his native languages German and Polish. By his mid-twenties, he could read and write in English, French, Persian and Arabic. In Palestine, Weiss engaged in arguments with Zionist leaders like Chaim Weizmann, voicing his criticism of the Zionist Movement. After traveling across the Arab World as a journalist, he converted to Islam in 1926 and chose for himself the Muslim name "Muhammad Asad"—Asad being the Arabic rendition of his root name Leo (Lion). During his stay in Saudi Arabia, he spent time with Bedouins and enjoyed close company of Ibn Saud—the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. He also carried out a secret mission for Ibn Saud to trace the sources of funding for the Ikhwan Revolt. Due to these activities, he was dubbed in a Haaretz article as "Leopold of Arabia"—hinting similarity of his activities to those of Lawrence of Arabia. On his visit to India, Asad became friends with Muslim poet-philosopher Muhammad Iqbal who persuaded him to abandon his eastward travels and "help elucidate the intellectual premises of the future Islamic state". He also spent five years in internment by the British Government at the outbreak of World War II. On 14 August 1947, Asad received Pakistani citizenship and later served at several bureaucratic and diplomatic positions including the Director of Department of Islamic Reconstruction, Deputy Secretary (Middle East Division) in the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan and Pakistan's Envoy to the United Nations. In the West, Asad rose to prominence as a writer with his best-selling autobiography, The Road to Mecca.Later, after seventeen years of scholarly research, he published his magnum opus: The Message of the Qur'an—an English translation and commentary of the Quran. The book, along with the translations of Pickthall and Yusuf Ali, is regarded as one of the most influential translations of the modern era. An ardent proponent of Ijtihad and rationality in interpreting religious texts, he dedicates his works: لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ to People who Think. In 2008, the entrance square to the UN Office in Vienna was named Muhammad Asad Platz in commemoration of his work as a "religious bridge-builder". For Pam Jenoff it all began with the astonishing success of her THE KOMMANDANT’S GIRL the World War II heartwrenching, Quill-nominated International Bestseller. Many successful books later she comes to us with her new title, THE ORPHAN’S TALE, already on the New York Times Bestseller List. THE ORPHAN’S TALE is set amid the unconventional world of a traveling circus, the novel bringing together two women—both refugees from their own pasts and each attempting to live under the radar during the Nazi incursion. Drawing on a little a little-known, real-life Nazi-run program, the Lebensborn Program, in which Jewish babies were ripped from their families and sent by train to concentration camps and the circuses of the era that sheltered Jews during the War, THE ORPHAN’S TALE exposes the light in the shadows of World War II. Author Jessica Shattuck’s grandparents were Nazi’s. She admitted the truth in a recent New York Times op ed. “My grandparents were Nazis,” Shattuck wrote. “It took me until recently to be able to say — or write — this.” It was when Shattuck came upon a picture of her grandfather in his Nazi uniform that Shattuck could no longer deny the truth, even though she had had and loved her grandmother who Shattuck says did not seem temperamentally suited to hate. Understanding why and how this woman Shattuck knew and loved was swept up in a movement that became synonymous with evil led to Shattuck’s writing her gripping new novel THE WOMEN IN THE CASTLE. Turbulent, disturbing, fraught, haunting, THE WOMEN IN THE CASTLE provides rarely seen insight into the lives of ordinary Germans during the Nazi era, providing a perspective rarely examined in the voluminous literature of the Second World War. Nazi, Germany, World War II, historical fiction, The Holocaust, Jewish literature two interesting conversations with bestselling authors Pam Jenoff and Jessica Shattuck on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show.
