Who Started World War II ? by Viktor Suvorov (full version)

49:48
This is Viktor Suvorov's book presentation at the United States Naval Academy on October 7, 2009. In his recent book "The Chief Culprit" the bestselling author Viktor Suvorov probes newly released Soviet documents and reevaluates existing material to analyze Stalin's strategic design to conquer Europe and the reasons behind his controversial support for Nazi Germany. He argues that Stalin was caught just days before launching his own assault into Central Europe. Thus the Red Army's offensive posture rendered it uniquely vulnerable to German attack. A former Soviet army intelligence officer (true name Vladimir Rezun), the author explains that Stalin's strategy leading up to World War II grew from Vladimir Lenin's belief that if World War I did not ignite the worldwide Communist revolution, then a second world war would be needed to achieve it. Stalin saw Nazi Germany as the power that would fight and weaken capitalist countries so that Soviet armies could then sweep across Europe. Suvorov reveals how Stalin conspired with German leaders to bypass the Versailles Treaty, which forbade German rearmament, and secretly trained German engineers and officers and provided bases and factories for war. He also calls attention to the 1939 nonaggression pact between the Soviet Union and Germany that allowed Hitler to proceed with his plans to invade Poland, fomenting war in Europe. Suvorov debunks the theory that Stalin was duped by Hitler and that the Soviet Union was a victim of Nazi aggression. Instead, he makes the case that Stalin neither feared Hitler nor mistakenly trusted him. Suvorov maintains that after Germany occupied Poland, defeated France, and started to prepare for an invasion of Great Britain, Hitler's intelligence services detected the Soviet Union's preparations for a major war against Germany. This detection, he argues, led to Germany's preemptive war plan and the launch of an invasion of the USSR. Stalin emerges from the pages of this book as a genius consumed by the vision of a worldwide Communist revolution at any cost--a leader who wooed Hitler and Germany in his own effort to conquer the world. In contradicting traditional theories about Soviet planning, the book is certain to provoke debate among historians throughout the world. About the Author VIKTOR SUVOROV is the author of eighteen books that have been translated into more than twenty languages, including "Inside the Aquarium: The Making of a Top Soviet Spy" and "Icebreaker: Who Started the Second World War?" A Soviet army officer who served in military intelligence, he defected in 1978 to the United Kingdom, where he worked as an intelligence analyst and lecturer. He lives in England. Mason Lecture Series - "Freedom's Forge: How American Business Produced Victory in World War II"

01:18:00
Hear from bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize Finalist, Arthur Herman, as he discusses his latest book, "Freedom's Forge." Remarkable as it may seem today, there once was a time when the president of the United States could pick up the phone and ask the president of General Motors to resign his position and take the reins of a great national enterprise. And the CEO would oblige, no questions asked, because it was his patriotic duty. In Freedom's Forge, bestselling author Arthur Herman takes us back to that time, revealing how two extraordinary American business men — automobile magnate William Knudsen and shipbuilder Henry J. Kaiser — helped corral, cajole, and inspire business leaders across the country to mobilize the "arsenal of democracy" that propelled the Allies to victory in World War II. Dr. Arthur Herman is a former visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, and the author of many books, including How the Scots Invented the Modern World and Gandhi & Churchill which was the 2009 Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction.

How Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' Became Bestseller

00:56
In January 2016, the Institute of Contemporary History released the first reprint of Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" since World War II. One year on, the German publisher says the book has sold some 85,000 copies and spent 35 weeks on Der Spiegel non-fiction best-seller list. Feedback from the book's distributors suggests most people purchasing the new edition are academics or people with a keen interest in historical events.Dr. Magnus Brechtken, deputy director of the Institute of Contemporary History said that critics concerned that the new edition could incite negative outcomes from far right groups should not be worried. The annotated edition counters Hitler's original text and is the antithesis of their ideology, he said. http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/04/europe/hitler-mein-kampf-reprint-germany/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

INFAMY: The Shocking Story of the Japanese-American Internment in World War II http://www.japansociety.org/event/infamy-the-shocking-story-of-the-japanese-american-internment-in-world-war-ii Bestselling author Richard Reeves provides an authoritative account of the internment of more than 120,000 Japanese-Americans and Japanese aliens during World War II in his 2015 release Infamy: The Shocking Story of the Japanese-American Internment in World War II. Shortly after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed an executive order allowing the U.S. Army to immediately begin rounding up thousands of Japanese-Americans, sometimes giving them less than 24 hours to vacate their houses and farms. For the rest of the war, these victims of war hysteria were imprisoned in primitive camps. Richard Reeves will tell a story of the best and the worst of America on both sides of the barbed wire. The discussion will be moderated by Fred Katayama, Anchor/Producer, Reuters Television; Board Director: Japan Society, U.S.-Japan Council. Richard Reeves, the bestselling author of such books as President Kennedy: Profile in Power, is an award-winning journalist who has worked for The New York Times, written for The New Yorker, and served as chief correspondent for Frontline on PBS. #1 Internationally bestselling author Antony Beevor on his new book, ARDENNES 1944

01:01
"Panoramic…definitive…essential reading for anyone interested in World War II.” – Kirkus Starred Review The prizewinning historian and bestselling author of STALINGRAD and D-DAY reconstructs the Battle of the Bulge in this riveting new account. On December 16, 1944, Hitler launched his ‘last gamble’ in the snow-covered forests and gorges of the Ardennes in Belgium. The harsh winter conditions and the savagery of the battle became comparable to the Eastern Front. There was terrible ferocity on both sides, and the Ardennes—involving more than a million men—would prove to be the battle which finally broke the back of the Wehrmacht. In this deeply researched work, Antony Beevor gives us the definitive account of the Ardennes offensive which was to become the greatest battle of World War II.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. When we talk about World War II, what are we really remembering, and what are we choosing to forget? This talk looks at some of the hidden motives behind our unhealthy obsession with the war. Keith Lowe is a British historian and an expert on the Second World War and its consequences. His books include the critically acclaimed Inferno: The Devastation of Hamburg 1943, and the international bestseller Olethros (Savage Continent), which won the 2013 Hessell Tiltman Prize for history. He is a regular speaker on TV and radio, and has lectured all over Europe and America on twentieth century history. He lives in London with his wife and two children. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Annotated 'Mein Kampf' best seller in Germany

03:03
(5 Jan 2017) An annotated edition of "Mein Kampf," Adolf Hitler's notorious manifesto, has become a non-fiction best-seller in Germany. The publisher said that a sixth print run will go on sale later this month. Some 85,000 copies of the book have been sold since it was first published a year ago, according to the Munich-based Institute for Contemporary History. The publisher spent years adding comments to Hitler's original text in an effort to highlight his propaganda and mistakes. The institute said in late 2015 that it planned an initial print run of up to 4,000 copies and wasn't sure whether more would be printed. In April, however, the book topped the weekly Der Spiegel's non-fiction best-seller list. The bulky two-volume edition, titled "Hitler, Mein Kampf: A Critical Edition," weighs in at 1,948 pages and costs a hefty 59 euros (62 US dollars). It was the first version to be published in Germany since the end of World War II. Before the copyright on "Mein Kampf held by Bavaria's state finance ministry expired at the end of 2015, the ministry had used it prevent the publication of new editions in the country. Despite its incendiary and anti-Semitic content, the book wasn't actually banned in Germany and could be found online, in secondhand bookshops and in libraries. The Institute for Contemporary History said fears that the new publication might help make Hitler's ideology socially acceptable had proven unfounded. German authorities have made clear they won't tolerate new versions without annotations. The Nanking Massacre: Iris Chang on the Controversy, Causes, Casualties, Denial (1998)

55:48
The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II is a bestselling 1997 non-fiction book written by Iris Chang. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0465068367/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0465068367&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=0fdde9e94c8a3438e0c93bc09ddf17c4 It is about the 1937--1938 Nanking Massacre, the massacre and atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese Army after it captured Nanjing, then capital of China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It describes the events leading up to the Nanking Massacre and the atrocities that were committed. The book presents the view that the Japanese government has not done enough to redress the atrocities. It is one of the first major English-language books to introduce the Nanking Massacre to Western and Eastern readers alike, and has been translated into several languages. The book was a source of fame for Chang but was also controversial; it was received with both acclaim and criticism by the public and by academics. It has been praised as a work that "shows more clearly than any previous account" the extent and brutality of the episode, while at the same time it was criticized as "seriously flawed" and "full of misinformation and harebrained explanations". Chang's research on the book was credited with the finding of the diaries of John Rabe and Minnie Vautrin, both of whom played important roles in the Nanking Safety Zone, a designated area in Nanjing that protected Chinese civilians during the Nanking Massacre. The book prompted AOL executive Ted Leonsis to fund and produce Nanking, a 2007 documentary film about the Nanking Massacre. Chang spent two years on research for the book. She found that raw source materials were available in the US, contained in the diaries, films, and photographs of American missionaries, journalists, and military officers who were in Nanjing at the time of the Nanking Massacre. Additionally, she traveled to Nanjing to interview survivors of the Nanking Massacre and to read Chinese accounts and confessions by Japanese army veterans. Chang did not, however, conduct research in Japan, and this left her vulnerable to criticisms on how she portrayed modern Japan in the context of how it deals with its World War II past. Chang's research led her to make what one San Francisco Chronicle article called "significant discoveries" on the subject of the Nanking Massacre, in the forms of the diaries of two Westerners that were in Nanjing leading efforts to save lives during the Japanese invasion. One diary was that of John Rabe, a German Nazi Party member who was the leader of the Nanking Safety Zone, a demilitarized zone in Nanjing that Rabe and other Westerners set up to protect Chinese civilians. The other diary belonged to Minnie Vautrin, the American missionary who saved the lives of about 10,000 women and children when she provided them with shelter in Ginling College. The diaries documented the events of the Nanking Massacre from the perspectives of their writers, and provided detailed accounts of atrocities that they saw, as well as information surrounding the circumstances of the Nanking Safety Zone. Chang dubbed Rabe the "Oskar Schindler of Nanking" and Vautrin the "Anne Frank of Nanking". Rabe's diary is over 800 pages, and contains one of the most detailed accounts of the Nanking Massacre. Translated into English, it was published in 1998 by Random House as The Good Man of Nanking: The Diaries of John Rabe. Vautrin's diary recounts her personal experience and feelings on the Nanking Massacre; in it, an entry reads, "There probably is no crime that has not been committed in this city today." It was used as source material by Hua-ling Hu for a biography of Vautrin and her role during the Nanking Massacre, entitled American Goddess at the Rape of Nanking: The Courage of Minnie Vautrin. The Rape of Nanking is structured into three main parts. The first uses a technique that Chang called "the Rashomon perspective" to narrate the events of the Nanking Massacre, from three different perspectives: that of the Japanese military, the Chinese victims, and the Westerners who tried to help Chinese civilians. The second part concerns the postwar reaction to the massacre, especially that of the American and European governments. The third part of the book examines the circumstances that, Chang believed, have kept knowledge of the massacre out of public consciousness decades after the war. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rape_of_Nanking_%28book%29

"Killing The Rising Sun" Book Review Bill O'Reilly, Amazon Best Seller!

05:50
Killing The Rising Sun Book @amazon ►http://amzn.to/2gJn9oj Killing The Rising Sun Review... Killing the Rising Sun: How America Vanquished World War II Japan by Fox News host Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard is the sixth book in the historical Killing series, following Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, Killing Patton and Killing Reagan. Bill O’Reilly… some people may not know… was a history teacher… before he became a world famous journalist. He and his co-author Martin Dugard… have created a book that literally should be ordained into a standard textbook in our school systems. It is accurate… it is bloody… it’s absolutely no holds barred. If some school districts can hand out birth control to children… they sure as hell can hand out a book that describes why we’re free… and the bloody price we paid for our freedom. The latest installment is about the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Unlike the earlier titles in the series which focused on the violent death of famous personalities, in this book the authors have shifted their attention not just to one nation but two caught in the throes of a devastating war. Killing the Rising Sun chronicled the violence and destruction as it was witnessed in the mid-1940s, and covers the War in the Pacific beginning in 1944, culminating with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. It was unprecedented. This retelling of history will put the events in its true perspective, and help readers better understand America and the world. The authors have done a splendid job by writing the events that unfolded as seen through the eyes of such figures as Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Harry Truman, Emperor Hirohito, and Robert Oppenheimer.

Bf 109 pilot Franz Stigler and B-17 pilot Charlie Brown's first meeting

06:49
This film was taken when Bf-109 ace Franz Stigler met B-17 pilot Charlie Brown for the first time since their encounter during WWII! The complete story of Franz and Charlie can be read in the international bestselling book, "A Higher Call," available in bookstores worldwide. The song in this video is titled "End Titles (From ''The Peacemaker'')" by Hans Zimmer. It is available in the album, "The Film Music Of Hans Zimmer Vol. 2" on Amazon.com About Franz Stigler: Franz Stigler started flying gliders at age 12 and soloed in a bi-plane in 1933. He joined Lufthansa, becoming an Airline Captain, before joining the Luftwaffe in 1940. There, he became an instructor pilot, with one of his students being Gerhard Barkhorn, who would later become the second highest scoring Ace in history with over 300 victories. Franz transferred to Bf 109 fighter aircraft upon learning of the loss of his brother August, who died piloting a bomber shot down over the English Channel. Franz flew combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Western Europe. He served as a Squadron Commander of three squadrons (Numbers 6, 8, and 12, of JG 27) and twice a Wing Commander, all flying Bf 109 fighters. Franz formed EJG-1, possibly the first ever pre-jet training squadron before being hand picked as the Technical Officer of Gen. Adolf Galland's elite JV 44, "Squadron of Experts," flying the Me-262 jet. Franz was credited with 28 confirmed victories and over thirty probables. He flew 487 combat missions, was wounded four times, and was shot down seventeen times, four by enemy fighters, four by ground fire, and nine times by gunners on American bombers. He bailed out six times and rode his damaged aircraft down eleven times. He emigrated to Canada in 1953 and became a successful businessman. In addition to his many Luftwaffe decorations, Franz was presented with the "Order of the Star of Peace" by the Federation of Combattant Allies En Europe for his act of compassion on December 20, 1943. He is believed to be the only Luftwaffe pilot to be so recognized. Franz was also made an honorary member of the 379th Bomb Group Association. Our friend, Franz, died in 2008 at the age of 93. About Charlie Brown: Charlie Brown graduated as a US Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. in April 1943. He arrived in England in early November 1943 as a B-17F pilot/aircraft commander and was wounded twice in completing 29 bomber combat missions out of 31 attempts (24 over Germany proper) with the famed 379th Bomb Group. He then delivered fighters and bombers, and flew transports from North Ireland to the United Kingdom until becoming a B-17 instructor pilot stateside. Itching to return to duty overseas, Charlie became a C-54/C-87 pilot and flew in the CBI theatre until the end of the war. After retiring from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel, Charlie accepted an appointment as a Senior Foreign Service Reserve Officer, serving for six years throughout Laos and Vietnam during the Vietnam War. After thirty years of government service he retired in 1972 and formed a combustion research company. In 1992 he was recognized by the Governor of West Virginia (Charlie's home state) with the "Distinguished West Virginia Award," both for his government service and research career. He was awarded a symbolic "Governor's Medal" by Governor Jeb Bush on October, 2001. Charlie's most prestigious honor was belatedly bestowed by the USAF in February 2008, when he was awarded the Air Force Cross (second only to the Medal of Honor) for bringing his badly damaged B-17 home to England during his December 20, 1943 mission. Our friend, Charlie, died in November 2008 at the age of 86.

Economic History of the 20th Century: World War I, Great Depression, Keynesian Theory (1994)

58:59
John Kenneth "Ken" Galbraith, OC (15 October 1908 -- 29 April 2006) was a Canadian and later, U.S., economist, public official and diplomat, and a leading proponent of 20th-century American liberalism. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0395741750/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0395741750&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=d6745224b4bbfc06c99a586c5049c147 His books on economic topics were bestsellers from the 1950s through the 2000s, during which time Galbraith fulfilled the role of public intellectual. In macro-economical terms he was a Keynesian and an institutionalist. Galbraith was a long-time Harvard faculty member and stayed with Harvard University for half a century as a professor of economics. He was a prolific author and wrote four dozen books, including several novels, and published over a thousand articles and essays on various subjects. Among his most famous works was a popular trilogy on economics, American Capitalism (1952), The Affluent Society (1958), and The New Industrial State (1967). Galbraith was active in Democratic Party politics, serving in the administrations of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; he served as United States Ambassador to India under the Kennedy administration. His prodigious literary output and outspokenness made him arguably "the best-known economist in the world"[4] during his lifetime.[5] Galbraith was one of few recipients both of the Medal of Freedom (1946) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2000) for his public service and contribution to science. The government of France made him a Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur. Galbraith was an important figure in 20th-century institutional economics, and provided an exemplary institutionalist perspective on economic power.[40] Among his numerous writing, Galbraith cherished The New Industrial State and The Affluent Society as his two best.[41] As for the later works, economist and Galbraith friend Mike Sharpe visited him in 2004, on which occasion Galbraith gave Sharpe a copy of what would be Galbraith last book, The Economics of Innocent Fraud. Galbraith confided in Sharpe that "this is my best book", an assertion Galbraith delivered "a little mischievously."[42] After the beginning of the Great Recession of 2008 Galbraith The Great Crash, 1929 (1955) and other books containing warnings about the dangers of an unrestrained speculative mood without proper government oversight found an attentive reader again. In 2010, the Library of America published a new edition of Galbraith major works, edited by his son, James K. Galbraith: The Affluent Society & Other Writings, 1952--1967: American Capitalism, The Great Crash, 1929, The Affluent Society, and The New Industrial State.[43] On this occasion, Bill Moyers interviewed James K. Galbraith about his father, his works and legacy.[44] In American Capitalism: The Concept of Countervailing Power, published in 1952, Galbraith concluded that the American economy was managed by a triumvirate of big business, big labor, and an activist government. Galbraith defined the actions of the industry lobby groups and unions as countervailing power. He contrasted this arrangement with the previous pre-Depression era where big business had relatively free rein over the economy. His 1954 bestseller The Great Crash, 1929 describes the famous Wall Street meltdown of stock prices and how markets progressively become decoupled from reality in a speculative boom. The book is also a platform for Galbraith's keen insights, and humour, into human behavior when wealth is threatened. It has never been out of print. In his most famous work, The Affluent Society (1958), which also became a bestseller, Galbraith outlined his view that to become successful, post-World War II America should make large investments in items such as highways and education using funds from general taxation. Galbraith also critiqued the assumption that continually increasing material production is a sign of economic and societal health. Because of this Galbraith is sometimes considered one of the first post-materialists. In this book, he coined and popularized the phrase "conventional wisdom".[45] Galbraith worked on the book while in Switzerland, and had originally titled it Why The Poor Are Poor but changed it to The Affluent Society at his wife's suggestion.[46] The Affluent Society contributed (likely to a significant degree, given that Galbraith had the ear of President Kennedy[8]) to the "war on poverty", the government spending policy introduced by the administrations of Kennedy and Johnson. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kenneth_Galbraith

Hell, even if you don’t like war memoirs (or don’t know if you like them) but do like to read about how ordinary people find the courage and capability to do extraordinary things, then you should read it, because Band of Brothers is so much more than a clinical recounting of battles or analysis of soldiering. It’s an inspiring story of how a motley crew of freewheeling young bucks became one of the most elite and effective light infantry units to fight in the European theater, and it follows them from beginning to end, from their grueling basic training to jumping into Normandy on D-Day, holding the line in the Battle of the Bulge, and, in the end, drinking Hitler’s champagne in the Bavarian Alps. Band of Brothers also made me #thankful365 that Hitler had to fight the GI Generation and not our current crop of spineless, self-absorbed, “safe space” Peter Pans and Pams that can’t even stomach the basic realities and responsibilities of adulthood, let alone fighting the Nazi war machine. Methinks the latter would have rather stayed home, smoked a bowl, and spluttered a few “sieg heils”… Want to be notified when my latest book recommendations go live? Beyond The Call: America's Last Hope

01:04:49
The Incredible Story of a WW2 Pilot's Covert Mission to Rescue POWs on the Eastern Front. One ordinary man; one extraordinary mission; a thousand lives at stake… This documentary tells the true story behind the bestselling book "Beyond the Call" by Lee Trimble. In late 1944, Lee's father, Captain Robert Trimble, a veteran B-17 bomber pilot, was tasked with a unique secret mission – to enter Soviet-occupied Poland in a bid to rescue the thousands of Allied ex-POWs who had been abandoned there by the Red Army. ADAM MAKOS, BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF "A HIGHER CALL" says: "Snappy and cinematic, "Beyond the Call" is a gift, an untold story from those last days of WWII in Europe when the unthinkable became real—when our ally had turned against us, when our POWs were left to die, and when a veteran pilot would receive a harrowing final mission—to fly against the might of the Soviet Union." _____________________________________________ BACKGROUND: Near the end of World War II, thousands of Allied ex-POWs liberated by the Red Army were abandoned to wander the war-torn Eastern Front. With no food, shelter, or supplies, they were an army of dying men. The Red Army had pushed the Nazis out of Russia. As they advanced across Poland, the prison camps of the Third Reich were discovered and liberated. In defiance of humanity, the freed Allied prisoners were discarded without aid. The Soviets viewed POWs as cowards, and regarded all refugees as potential spies or partisans; they either abandoned them to their fate or rounded them up into detainment camps. They refused all offers by the Allies to help. The only solution was to go undercover. READ THE FULL STORY of Captain Trimble's mission in "Beyond the Call". The future of the free world hung in the balance. An isolationist-leaning United States was an ocean away. There was one man who stood between Hitler’s seemingly invincible army and crushing defeat. That one man was Winston Churchill. He was born on November 30, 1874. Though we think of him as the quintessential Englishman, he was actually half American. His mother, Jennie, was the daughter of a wealthy New York stock speculator. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was of English nobility and a major political figure. From his early school days, Churchill recognized the power of words. Throughout his life, he used them with consummate skill. They never let him down. He first made a name for himself as a war correspondent in the 1890s, covering conflicts in Cuba, Northern India, the Sudan, and South Africa. Though he never abandoned journalism, and became one the greatest historians of his age, Churchill used his family connections and his own fame to launch himself into politics. His confident manner and matchless oratory marked him as a natural leader. 1914 and World War I found him in the key position of First Lord of the Admiralty where he did much to modernize Britain’s navy. In 1915, Churchill thought he could bring a speedy end to the war by opening a new front in Turkey, which he perceived as the weak link in the German alliance against the allies. This led to the infamous Gallipoli campaign. Badly underestimating the fighting strength of the Turks, thousands of British, Australian and New Zealand soldiers were killed in battles that proved to be every bit as indecisive and bloody as the campaigns on Europe’s Western front. Churchill took the blame. This was perhaps the low point of his life. Dismissed from the war cabinet, five months later he enlisted in the army, where he saw action in France. He rose again in British politics throughout the 1920s, making money—as he always did—through his writing and speaking. As Adolph Hitler took power in Germany in the 1930s, Churchill was one of the first and certainly the loudest voice in England sounding the alarm. But it was an alarm few in England wanted to hear. The English had been traumatized, as had all of Europe, by the shocking amount of death and destruction of the First World War. No one wanted to face the possibility that it could happen again. Churchill, however, saw that a new confrontation with Germany was inevitable. And when the inevitable arrived with the stunning German attack on France in May 1940, a desperate nation turned to him. He was ready. His weapons were his pen, his voice and his words. “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat,” he told the House of Commons in his first speech as Prime Minister. Things quickly turned from bad to worse. France collapsed, Belgium surrendered, and a quarter of a million British soldiers barely managed to escape from Dunkirk. Even as the war news moved from dangerous to desperate to disastrous, Churchill never wavered. In speech after speech, he infused the British with the spirit to fight on against Hitler’s monstrous tyranny. HOLOCAUST LITERATURE NY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHORS PAM JENOFF JESSICA SHATTUCK

53:56
Source: https://www.spreaker.com/user/hallicasserjayne/interview-pam-jenoff-jessica-shattuck-fi As we commemorate HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY this week on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, we visit with two authors best known for their Holocaust historical fiction, New York Times bestselling author Pam Jenoff and New York Times Notable Author and PEN finalist Jessica Shattuck. For Pam Jenoff it all began with the astonishing success of her THE KOMMANDANT’S GIRL the World War II heartwrenching, Quill-nominated International Bestseller. Many successful books later she comes to us with her new title, THE ORPHAN’S TALE, already on the New York Times Bestseller List. THE ORPHAN’S TALE is set amid the unconventional world of a traveling circus, the novel bringing together two women—both refugees from their own pasts and each attempting to live under the radar during the Nazi incursion. Drawing on a little a little-known, real-life Nazi-run program, the Lebensborn Program, in which Jewish babies were ripped from their families and sent by train to concentration camps and the circuses of the era that sheltered Jews during the War, THE ORPHAN’S TALE exposes the light in the shadows of World War II. Author Jessica Shattuck’s grandparents were Nazi’s. She admitted the truth in a recent New York Times op ed. “My grandparents were Nazis,” Shattuck wrote. “It took me until recently to be able to say — or write — this.” It was when Shattuck came upon a picture of her grandfather in his Nazi uniform that Shattuck could no longer deny the truth, even though she had had and loved her grandmother who Shattuck says did not seem temperamentally suited to hate. Understanding why and how this woman Shattuck knew and loved was swept up in a movement that became synonymous with evil led to Shattuck’s writing her gripping new novel THE WOMEN IN THE CASTLE. Turbulent, disturbing, fraught, haunting, THE WOMEN IN THE CASTLE provides rarely seen insight into the lives of ordinary Germans during the Nazi era, providing a perspective rarely examined in the voluminous literature of the Second World War. Nazi, Germany, World War II, historical fiction, The Holocaust, Jewish literature two interesting conversations with bestselling authors Pam Jenoff and Jessica Shattuck on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show. "Gripped me from the first page and didn't let go." —Alyson Richman, bestselling author of The Lost Wife In this richly emotional novel, Kristina McMorris evokes the depth of a mother's bond with her child, and the power of personal histories to echo through generations... Two years have done little to ease veterinarian Audra Hughes's grief over her husband's untimely death. Eager for a fresh start, Audra plans to leave Portland for a new job in Philadelphia. Her seven-year-old son, Jack, seems apprehensive about flying—but it's just the beginning of an anxiety that grows to consume him. Desperate, she traces snippets of information unearthed in Jack's dreams, leading her to Sean Malloy, a struggling US Army veteran wounded in Afghanistan. Together they unravel a mystery dating back to World War II, and uncover old family secrets that still have the strength to wound—and perhaps, at last, to heal. Hitler's Autobiography "Mein Kampf" Becomes German Bestseller

02:07
The first reprint of Adolf Hitler's autobiography "Mein Kampf," the first since the end of World War II, has become a surprise bestseller in Germany after it was banned for seven decades. The Institute of Contemporary History of Munich, the book's publisher, said recently that about 85,000 copies of the new annotated version of the Nazi leader's infamous anti-Semitic manifesto had been sold since its release in January last year. The book is now in its sixth print run. Mein Kampf, which means "My Struggle" in English, was published in two volumes in 1925-1926. Written while Hitler was in prison, it features autobiographical information about his youth and explains his anti-Semitic and extremist views. For 70 years, the hate-filled book was banned out of respect for victims of the Nazis and to prevent incitement of hatred. But the book finally entered the public domain, as historians widely agree on the dangers of reducing that period of history to just one man, and the need to look at the causes and consequences of totalitarian ideologies. "Hitler was important for National Socialism, but Hitler would have been a nobody in a different context. Hitler would be a nobody today. Hitler needed certain conditions in order to found his National Socialist movement," said Ardent Bauerkamper, a historian at the Free University of Berlin. Bauerkamper said the new dual-volume version is very different from the old one, refuting the idea that it will fuel the rise of white supremacists and neo-Nazis. "This is a critical edition. I mean, there are a lot of annotations, a lot of corrections, a lot of footnotes, remarks, critical commentaries. So I don't think this edited edition of Mein Kampf is really a danger, he said. Explaining the book's popularity, readers said it has fostered debate on the renewed rise of authoritarian political views and right-wing slogans in contemporary Western society. "I think there's value in that because you've got a resurgence of right-wing politics, especially like in the UK. And people don't seem to realize it," said a resident of Berlin. "I think it's super important given that the fear propaganda is being used so much in America right now, which is very prominent. I think that if we really dissected some historical events, it would go a really long way," said another. http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20170108/8040351.shtml#!language=1 Subscribe us on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CCTVPlus CCTV+ official website: http://www.cctvplus.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cctv-news-content Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NewsContent.CCTVPLUS Twitter: https://twitter.com/CCTV_Plus

Dennis Lehane on World Gone By - 2015 L.A. Times Festival of Books

09:50
Rich Fahle interviews Dennis Lehane about his latest book, “World Gone By.” FROM THE PUBLISHER: Dennis Lehane, the New York Times bestselling author of The Given Day and Live by Night, returns with a psychologically and morally complex novel of blood, crime, passion, and vengeance, set in Cuba and Ybor City, Florida, during World War II, in which Joe Coughlin must confront the cost of his criminal past and present. Ten years have passed since Joe Coughlin’s enemies killed his wife and destroyed his empire, and much has changed. Prohibition is dead, the world is at war again, and Joe’s son, Tomás, is growing up. Now, the former crime kingpin works as a consigliore to the Bartolo crime family, traveling between Tampa and Cuba, his wife’s homeland. A master who moves in and out of the black, white, and Cuban underworlds, Joe effortlessly mixes with Tampa’s social elite, U.S. Naval intelligence, the Lansky-Luciano mob, and the mob-financed government of Fulgencio Batista. He has everything—money, power, a beautiful mistress, and anonymity. But success cannot protect him from the dark truth of his past—and ultimately, the wages of a lifetime of sin will finally be paid in full. Dennis Lehane vividly recreates the rise of the mob during a world at war, from a masterfully choreographed Ash Wednesday gun battle in the streets of Ybor City to a chilling, heartbreaking climax in a Cuban sugar cane field. Told with verve and skill, World Gone By is a superb work of historical fiction from one of “the most interesting and accomplished American novelists” (Washington Post) writing today.
