Great list. I'm 10 for 10.👍😎
Lainie Sinclair (15 days ago)
I'm not full time yet but I really appreciate your list. One thought, though, you mention your solar isn't enough to run a microwave. I haven't had a microwave in over 10 years. I was concerned about the effect on food quality. I absolutely don't miss it, and i find that reheating leftovers in a small frying pan with a touch of olive oil actually tastes better! Just a thought <3

Love gorilla tape. It's a single girls handy man.
Wendy Lou (2 months ago)
I know your vegan but you can buy some "salt pork", cut a small piece, heat the cast iron and rub it around to season the pan. It also adds wonderful flavor to greens, veggies, squash, zucchini...omg now I'm hungry 👌
Brenda Gillespie (2 months ago)
Thank you Carolyn. I am thinking about getting the tape you mentioned. My husband is paralyzed and I have in the past have had his Air-mattress spring a leak (keeps him from getting bedsores) the Gorilla tape and everything similar just doesn't do the job I am feeling this may be a great fix. lol! You are such a blessing ; ) Keep on Keeping on and traveling mercies for you and Capone B. Darlene

Carolyn, can you cover what a C class registration cost what insurance cost approx. And any other basic needs for an RV, for us clueless types.

I just found this channel and am impressed by your work. I lived in my car for about 6 years while I worked in the Bay area. I have traveled to most states while working from my car (cell phones and the internet) I saved LOTS of money on rent and recurrent expenses. As a result, I learned a lot about myself, people and our economy. I am not a "homeless" person but wanted to learn how to be really frugal while saving money. Today, I live on a ranch in California with no mortgage and have absolute financial freedom. Why should I work so hard just to give it away in taxes to the lazy and the government? My monthly living expenses were much much lower than yours. I saved close to 96% of my net income while "camping". Good luck on your journey. Stay focused on the future.

Thanks! I lived mostly in and near Redwood city and found a lot of nice strategies to survive: Here are a few. For personal hygiene, showers etc I visit Universities. They have a shower room, restroom facilities and more. You need ANY student or Alumni badge. Even with no credentials you can always be an ALUMNI, they ALWAYS want members. I rarely ever had anyone ask for the cards or credentials.. I just clip it ( could even be a local library card) on a cord and wear it around my neck. It gets tiresome living in Honda Accord ---not good for restful sleep. I found FREE or low priced sleeping quarters as part of a reciprocal agreement between larger Universities. I would try to focus on minimal numbers of meals per day which saves money tine and energy looking for a meal. Of course I love to eat vegetables and fruit which require no or little preparation. In expensive areas I looked for local and state campgrounds. I found some "First Nation" ( American Indian) camps for only free or $2/night. I also had a mail forwarding service which was very useful. I liked the paging function on my cell phone. When mixed with email, it is cheaper than voice calls. Of course the Internet is mostly free everywhere. The huge advantage is in NOT PAYING RENT. Rent is the number one killer of a budget. I found that it is NOT how much money you make per hour, week, or month! it is HOW MUCH you do NOT SPEND. In the "old days" I used to get all wound up working for an organization trying to get a promotion or award. IT IS NOT worth the time or energy chasing those carrots. When you build up a sizable cash reserve you are NO longer stressed out in a "no job" situation. The key is Self Confidence knowing you will win with or without that special job. You know that in the system, the more you make, the more debts you have and daily costs of living like your coworkers. Never let them know. All of them; coworkers and supervisors will get jealous. One time I was having dinner in a very pricey restaurant ( why not splurge?) when a boss, three levels up saw me and later told my boss. What was HE doing in that restaurant? Really! Managers always want you to work for them on the treadmill for their benefit. They see us as Plebeians. It is like slavery to me but without the whips or beatings. The social expectations are abusive, Have fun and ENJOY. Another tidbit. Don't get stuck thinking you must be working in an "academic" job. I learned that EVERY JOB that I could do even below minimum wage was NEVER "below" me. I have done everything from cleaning toilets to managing large numbers of employees. Getting a job is ALWAYS WHO you know, not your skills knowledge or your education. If I were still employed in the rat race, I would have little assets or happiness to show for the work. "PAY" You First. Of course no drinking gambling or drugs. You are the "temple" for you life.

Cast iron cookware adds iron to whatever you cook, so it's great for us gals! Don't cook highly acidic foods until the pan is well-seasoned like yours. And those dutch ovens make the BEST biscuits!
Anne K (6 months ago)
To avoid things moving around in your frig, I agree on the racks but you need to push those items to the back of the frig and then secure those racks further back so those bottles ca not move around!
Karen P (6 months ago)
Are you able to blow dry your hair daily? We're going f/t soon and I like drying my hair after showers.
JimnKathy Hopkins (6 months ago)
Have you considered getting one of the venturi covers for your pipe that vents the black tank? It is supposed to create a slight vacuum while you are driving or the breeze blows to suck the fumes from the black tank and vent them outside rather than inside the RV. http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/cyclone-sewer-vent/31992&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&scid=scplp31992&sc_intid=31992&affiliateid=6338&gclid=CjwKCAiA1O3RBRBHEiwAq5fD_E9MmBa2A4e16SLPpvMzTpr27ud58mf_3BFM3iJOqmm6SzFsFwnO1BoCwl4QAvD_BwE

Thank you for the great list. I love cooking with cast iron as well. Besides using them on the stovetop and oven, I use them on campfires and on top of the wood stove. The Dutch oven is great because you can cook in it with hot coals or charcoal on the lid. I have my great grandmother’s cast iron pan plus I’ve bought and refurbished some old ones from antique stores. Thanks for posting the link to yours - really like that setup!

HELPFUL HINT: Put refrigerator bottles inside of a box, ensuring items are snug against each other, ensures no tipping over and making a mess, broken glass, etc. CostCo boxes, or grocery store boxes are good. You can "pretty" the boxes up by adhering contact paper onto boxes...so you can damp wet rag them clean if need be. If you fear bottles clanking together and breaking in transit, put newspaper or paper towels around/inbetween bottles. If you get bubble wrap in stuff you order....use that !

Can you find this tape (EternaBond) at Lowes, Home Depot?
I_Dont_Eat_My_Friends (7 months ago)
Cast iron doesn't save propane. It takes longer to heat and requires a higher flame than other pots. If you really wanna save a ton of propane, get a pressure cooker. They require half to a third the cooking time, and you don't need to wash them thoroughly since they kill bacteria.
Carolyn's RV Life (7 months ago)
I disagree.

Carolyn's Online Store! <3 Who needs t-shirts? With solar, it is better for you, but far better for seasonal and tent campers who don't want to hear generators in the woods!

Hi Carolyn, You may want to revise the seasoning temperature. According to the Lodge factory they use 420 degrees for 20 minutes to season the pots. I use it and it works great. For the complete story check my link: http://livingprepared.blogspot.com/2010/04/cast-iron-cookware-seasoning.html

SUNGLASSES!!! Carolyn, sunglasses!!! Brita filters do not remove fluoride from tap water. Reverse osmosis is required, to be really safe.
Karl Miller (7 months ago)
From a decades user of cast iron. Extreme tmp changes will destroy your cast iron also it does not hurt and is in fact benificial to clean with water. Use a spray bottle and do while it is still warm and make sure it is dry and then dry it again.

Roobah (7 months ago)
Next time you need to tape something, clean both parts with rubbing alcohol first to get all oils off and "chemically" prep the surface. Might not be possible to do on Matilda though since the vehicle is already older and weather worn. Good to know there are other tapes out there, too.
Carolyn's RV Life (7 months ago)
Yes I did that
Roobah (7 months ago)
Another plus: Women benefit from the extra iron and you'll get it with a cast iron Dutch oven. Start the dry deep clean process by cleaning with some soft, clean sand if just wiping doesn't work for you. The one thing I wouldn't be able to live without is a really good Thermos, whether for hot drinks or cold drinks.
Regina Palmer (7 months ago)
Hi Carolyn! I use my Lodge cast iron pans every day! Can't live without them! Great #1 Tip for anyone!
