Everyone knows how important sleep is for keeping in good physical and mental health. However, how long you sleep is just as important as the way you sleep. The position you sleep in can affect your health, help keep your skin looking young, and boost your digestive health.
Here are six ways sleeping on your left side is good for your health.
1. It Bolsters the Lymphatic System
Ayurvedic medicine says that sleeping on your left side lets your body better filter lymph fluid and waste through the lymph nodes. This is because the left side of our body is the stronger lymphatic side. Western studies also found that sleeping on the left side can help the body break down waste materials from the brain. However, sleeping on the right side can lower the lymphatic system’s power.
2. It May Improve Digestion
When it comes to digestion, sleeping on the left side may be better than the right, because of gravity. Lying on the left side lets food waste easily move from the large intestine into the lower colon, meaning you’re more likely to have a bowel movement when you wake up.
Sleeping on the left side lets the stomach and pancreas hang naturally because our stomach lies on the left side of the body. This can make sure the body keeps creating pancreatic enzymes and will help other digestive processes.
3. It’s Good for Your Heart
Doctors advise that pregnant women sleep on their left side to boost circulation to the heart. Even if you’re not pregnant, or a woman, sleeping on the left side may help take some weight off the heart. Gravity can help lymph drainage toward the heart, and aortic circulation away from the heart.
4. It’s Ideal for Pregnant Women
Sleeping on the left side doesn’t only boost pregnant women’s circulation. It can also help ease weight on the back, keep the uterus from squeezing the liver, and raise blood flow to the uterus, kidneys, and fetus. For this reason, doctors tell pregnant women to spend as much of their sleep time as possible on their left sides.
5. It May Reduce Heartburn
A study written in The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology found that lying on the left side can help lower acid reflux signs. This is because our stomach lies on the left side. Lying on the right side may worsen these signs. The help comes very fast; if you’re feeling heartburn after a meal, try lying down on your left side for ten minutes.
6. It May Relieve Back Pain
People with chronic back pain may feel a little better if they switch to sleeping on their left side. That’s because sleeping on your side can ease weight on the spine. Feeling more comfortable will raise your chances of getting a good night’s sleep.
If you usually sleep on your back, your front, or your right side, you may wonder how to break that habit and start sleeping on your left side.
It will take some time and practice, but you will be able to quickly train your body to sleep in this position.
Here are some tips:
You can try lying on your left side and press a full-length body pillow up against your back. The pillow will stop you from rolling over during the night.
Try switching the side of the bed you sleep on. This will make it easier for you to flip to your other side and have the same great sleep.
Another trick is to keep a dim light lit on your right side. Because your body will naturally want to turn away from the light while you sleep, it will make it easier for you to sleep on your left side.
Try these small changes as soon as you can - they will make your sleep better and lead you to better health.
It’s important to note that some people - like those with heart disease, sleep apnea, glaucoma, and carpal tunnel syndrome - may not get help from sleeping on their left sides.
If you’re not sure about what sleep position would be best for you, it’s always a good idea to ask a doctor.

Since you’re in a semi unconscious state,I can start on my back, wake up in a total different position,in between I have no idea or memory on how many times in have moved to the right or left or on my back again.
I started sleeping on my LEFT side in MAY 1967. VIETNAM — TWO TOURS. When it was necessary to “sleep” in situations not allowing for the Air Force’s custom made, down filled, bed, I would bunch up my field jacket — or in warmer climate (just about ALL the time) and sans a jacket, I would make a “comfortable” pillow out of my ass pack, and off to sleepy time, usually interrupted by ignorant local people making a lot of damn noise. By sleeping on my left side, and being right handed, I found that I could quickly retrieve my 45 pistol, which I placed under my pack, and quickly get into all the fun that the rest of the WORLD was having at that time! All the comforts of home in a nasty place where individuals I had never met nor was even remotely aware of their existence, were trying to kill me. Ah, yes. That ass pack was really an indispensable item and I NEVER left home without it!
Our messenger Mohammed peace be upon him told us everything alhmdulilah. BTW you should sleep on your right not left side. As narrated in the hadiths below, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) used to sleep on his right side putting his right hand on his right cheek.
Narrated Al-Bara ibn Azib (ra),
"When the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) used to retire to his bed, he would lie on his right side and then say, 'O Allah, I surrender my soul to You and I turn my face to You and I entrust my affair to You and I seek Your support with hope and fear of You. There is no refuge from You but to You. I have believed in Your Book which You sent down and Your Prophet whom You sent.'" (Bukhari).
Ya'ish ibn Tikhfa al-Ghifari said,
"My father said, 'Once while I was lying on my stomach in the mosque, a man moved me with his foot and said, "This is a position which Allah hates."'" He said, "I looked up and it was the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." [Abu Dawud].
prophet Mohammed told us everything we just need to follow him.

This is something I actually have thought about. I've been a left side sleeper for years so I'm glad that I am on the right side (pun intended) of something healthful for a change. Instead of thinking that IF I continue to sleep that same way which seems natural to me there's going to be something wrong with me from that. Now that I've also raised the head of my bed up 6 inches (called "inclined bed therapy") I admit to sleeping better than ever.
Explains why i automatically sleep on my left. Apnea, and asthma and a car wreck. Even in a hospital bed, through cancer treatment i was on my left side. Also leaving my computer on behind me. Win, win ,win situation.
I have been sleeping on my left side for at least 25 years. It started when I began sharing a bed. I have no known diseases, heart related or otherwise, and I don't feel comfortable sleeping in any other position. If your heart feels pressure or discomfort, it is more than probable that some other condition exists. I sincerely doubt that it is from your sleeping position.
Im just comming here to thumbs up and subscribe for one reason. You put the info in the title without clickbait or making me go through a 5 min intro. Sleep on the left? Got it. If i want to know why, watch the video? Got it.
Worst is eat these 5 things to cure whatever. 15 min video and they tell you at 12 mins what the info is.
I sleep on my belly, but facing the right side... Would that be about the same as sleeping on my left side? I find it way more comfortable and it’s easier for me to fall asleep this way than any other position I’ve tried.
after reading other';s comments on whether its best sleeping on left or right side, i think i'll sleep on the side that seems to work best for me.. my backside-:) when i fall asleep on either side, i usually have a scream-dream nightmare within minutes of dozing off. On my back, my dreams are 'normal' and even funny as i wake up laughing. Sleeping on my stomach is not even an option. So has anyone with or without a medical background actual truthful facts about sleeping on your back?
I first saw a headline about this months ago and dismissed since I have always slept on my left side mostly. Evidently my body told me this many years ago all on it's own. Imagine that nature did it again.
I’m watching this cause I slept on my right today and I woke up with bubbling acid in my stomach and I’m not hungry and I can feel the bubbles and the sound is so weird it doesn’t sound like your hungry it sounds like someone pooping LMAO IK TMI but I’m lucky I’m not in public rn my stomach would be weird. 😂 I’ll sleep on my left From now. Thank you I started getting worried! I also keep my knees up evernight I turn into that cause my feet and legs get cold. So that probably isn’t the best either.
False sleeping on right sides taught by prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h n he was best in knowledge like whatever he said practically proven use of honey, camel milk, eating 4 dates at least are best for health ..everything he told us already so ur video is absurd.
I feel much more comfortable on my left side, so no need to comment anymore. I don't feel any extra weight on the heart. You guys really need to tell the truth. If you are, which is unbelievable, I guess I'm different.
Guys! Please reply to this comment. I watched this video and I read the comments, which should I believe? This video shows different things but in the comments it said it puts pressure on the heart. Help!
When I was young, I always had nightmare when I slept on left side. The heart was pressured. I slept mostly on right side. My right eye was uncomfortable due to whole night dropping on right side. My nose tip dropped on right side that caused inner dividing soft bone banded. I had operation to slice a little bit of dividing bone off in order to breath through left nostril Last year of college. I trained myself to sleep on my back. Health exercise teacher told me that I should sleep on right side. I did. My nose slightly tilt to right, my right line from right nostril down to mouth became deeper than left side. Worse yet. My right collarbone became bigger than the left. It might be caused by bone density worsen due to age. Also the spine became problem. I had to go to spine doctor to adjust my spine...all the bones along it. Now, I sleep on my back again without pillow to straighten up my neck bones align with my spine. The spine doctor told me to lay on floor half hour for my spine per day, no sitting on couch. or too soft chairs.
