And that's why you should tax in percentages, not in certain amounts

Who's got two thumbs and is REALLY GLAD they finished the first span of the new Tappan Zee Bridge six months ago! THIS GUY!

Let it all crumble. Where are the flying cars I'll tell you where they are nowhere that's where and why because a flying vehicle makes more things accessible and the powers that be don't want that.

Ok ok ok, it's 2018 for christs sake. Where tf is the Infrastructure movie? Wasted looooads of cash on suicide squad when you could have made THAT instead? For shame hollywoodland, for shame...
William Colt (10 days ago)
believe it or not I think I'm the most boring person on the planet; because I would actually go pay to see that movie. though it needs to contain a sufficient about of educational content, and I'M A FUCKING HELICOPTER PILOT! #pilotsforinfastructure

Well, looks like we'll be seeing the world premiere of Infrastructure this summer. Who's already got their tickets?
Alex the Memelord (11 days ago)
Maybe we could, oh gee, i dont know, drastically cut our defense spending for our bloated military and put it towards funding the highway trust fund?
Lucky Striker (13 days ago)
I support privatizing infrastructure because, while corporations could be a problem sometime down the road, they at least have an incentive to keep infrastructure maintained and functioning.
Roedy Green (16 days ago)
Here is my funding solution to reduce the political pain. 1. Announce that gas taxes are now indexed by inflation 2. Calculate the monthly increment as 3% of the difference between the current rate and the adjusted rate. 3. Every month increase the tax by the increment until it reaches the adjusted rate. It stays at the adjusted rate from then on.
Roedy Green (16 days ago)
If you want your infrastructure fixed, somebody has to pay for it. 1. gas tax. Automatically raises the amount based on how big, heavy the vehicle, and how much damage it does to the infrastructure. 2. You should punish bad behavior. There is no more wicked activity that burning fossil fuels to make CO2. 3. You could have toll bridges, but that requires toll takers and slows down traffic. 4. You could take it out of general revenue. But then you punish those who never use the infrastructure. People who want services but refuse to pay taxes are childish wishful-thinking brats.

230 dams 7 checkers so one checker did 32 dams in a year? thats less then one dam in one and a half week... are these guys sloths? or do they just work on mondays?
Arzigogolato (25 days ago)
I really don't understand why the U.S. government does not find the strength to put a heavy tax on gas: not only it would finance infrastructure (and maybe also public transportation), but it would also push people to buy more efficient cars, lowering Co2 emissions...
Dhindara Vrel (26 days ago)
Infrastructure is a film I'd actually watch. Please make that!

Funny thing is this is my job. If you think underfunding is a problem...NOPE...nobody gives a shit about infrastructure...I'm the one and only engineer typically involved on these jobs. Most structural and mechanical engineers focus on new construction or design....in-service structural evaluation is tough ...there is a lot of complex sciences involved that take experience and skill in my field...theory only gets you so far...most the repair contractors don't give a shit, or know shit about anything...they are basically general laborers...Christ there are no tradesmen left in this world...I'm currently involved with a structure I will only say is similar to a tree about 100 feet tall and made of steel...its been chopped away almost around the entire base by corrosion...corrosion that was seen but placed in the hands of laborers......and volunteers who's simple solution wasn't to offer any drainage to where the water was pooling...or to properly paint and preserve this structure...but dump large amounts of underlayment over it...which didn't bond and created and accelerated crevice corrosion...picture that guy in high school that didn't give a shit about anything...that's whos rebuilding these bridges or determining their needs...why won't the bureaucrats step up to the plate LOL...because this requires a higher education LMAO....Christ if you knew how much cost is a win all argument to finding the most bizarre solutions...like that bridge that shields the crumbling bridge from traffic...I'm using a liquid epoxy injection mold to repair a massive steel structure.....aka I'm using paint cured into a mold to be used in place of steel.....because god forbid we have to stop a "non-for-profit business" from operating for 3 weeks...I have seen it all...carbon fiber wrapped clarifiers...basically silos carrying every type of heavy metal and naturally occurring radio isotope maybe 10 feet from an agricultural farm land so corroded an set to immanently fail they take to fiber reinforced plastic....and while in "theory" that works on "paper"....your trusting the contractor aka morons to install it...cure time is everything people....lol...they don't care....the that's why the contractor has insurance...but the contractor thinks the engineers professional liability will kick in...not when a failure analysis shows inept installation...

Trump will rather Slash the Corporate Tax Rate and remove the Estate Tax than fix the Infrastructure. RIP America.
brenten desario (1 month ago)
I hope we raise the gas tax! Gas prices go up and down all the time and benift only the gas companies and oil-producing Nations. A gas tax to keep up with inflation from 1993 would only benefit us and provide us with badass new infrastructure!

Stay on congressman’s and senators asses when they spend foolish and out irresponsible amounts of money on chairs and desks, toilet seats(from a few years back). Take a more three choices approach to all spending congressmen, senators, governors and mayors across the country. Like a child at McDonald’s when you give them 3 acceptable options to eat. The child still gets to make a choice but it reigns in the total spending options. That’s also creating jobs to have workers to a couple yearly experience reports and break down all items each job needs to do their job effectively such as hotels 2 or 3 affordable options, flights, office furniture, office supplies one choice. If they want better than government provides it comes out of their pocket like everyone else does. This is a way to have money for infrastructure and dam repairs without raising the cost at the gas pump. President and his cabinet, supreme courts etc. this will work I’m telling you it will work.

Not since George Carlin's stand up, or Bill Maher's "Real Time," or Michael Moore's the "Awful Truth." have I enjoyed such powerful, witty satire. Mr. Oliver, Kudos to you for saying what needs to be said in your cheeky, irreverent but accurate way. With so much stupidity continuing, you all but assure your commentary is not simply a re-invention of the wheel, but timely, accurate dialogue. More please...

As a Dutch civil engineer I can't believe that this message is still necessary in a developed country. Over here every infrastructure authority is required by law to have a long-term maintenance plan (including financing) which has to be updated on a yearly basis. Our biggest worry is climate change and even those effects are now being incorporated into our maintenance plans.

I can't believe I'm going to say, but Infrastructure could work. Make it a time travel thriller, someone comes from the future to undo a horrible a serious of absolutely horrible accidents that happened because the nations infrastructure was not properly taken care of.

The Highway infrastructure fund will be wipred out by out Republican congress. Then they will use this as an excuse to help trump privatize our infrastructure- Thus creating a few more billionaire oligarchs, and screwing the entire country. Forever.

8:47 : That's sadly so hilarious... I hate those shows, that give a "what if" like that; spending money that could've been used to - I dunno, feed babies? (of any species) - to show a terrible possibility with the pathos of a 7-yr-old boy who already has been talked to about not killing the cat...

If some of these greedy politicians use all the money they've been hoarding unethically to repair this shit, less people would care about how shitty they are. people only really care that the job gets done.
Ciprian (2 months ago)
If even John Oliver got it, kinda gets you wondering why authorities never took infrastructure seriously until a bridge did fall... This coming from an Eastern European....Even by our standards, this level of ignorance would be impressive even to our authorities...

Hi, Neighbor! (2 months ago)
Anyone here after the Miami bridge collapse? Our infrastructure is a joke.
Terry Roberts (2 months ago)
An overpass in Miami just collapsed and killed people. This is a serious problem. John Oliver's analysis was an important warning. We need to start heeding it.
Terry Roberts (2 months ago)
To be clear: the overpass was new, not old and crumbling. Apparently the problem was with the way it was being installed. They're still investigating. But infrastructure is still a huge problem.
Digitalhunny (2 months ago)
SOLUTION to AMERICA'S INFRASTRUCTURE ISSUE: 1. Stop making the Penny. 2. ALL allotted penny money, goes to the infrastructure fund. 3. Fix your bridges, dams & roads! You're Welcome!
